Download or read book Economic Impact Analysis of the Sound Recording Industry in Canada written by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) was engaged by Music Canada (formerly the Canadian Recording Industry Association) to estimate the direct and indirect economic impacts of the Canadian sound recording industry (the recording industry). For the purpose of this study, the Canadian recording industry is defined as those companies involved in developing, publishing, manufacturing, distributing, marketing and promoting musical recordings and artists and performers. In Canada, the recording industry is comprised of four major record companies and hundreds of independent companies that vary in size and scope. The recording industry represents one segment of the broader music industry. The broader music industry can be defined as including live performing events, physical and digital retailers and the use of musical recordings in film and television. An even broader definition may include the manufacturing and sale of musical instruments, merchandising, tourism generated as a result of live musical performances and other related but non-industry revenues and activities. While the recording industry is only a subset of the music industry, it plays an important role in generating revenues for these activities and the resulting economic impacts.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the impact of technological trends on the various sectors of the Canadian recording industry, examines the adequacy of existing policies, and makes recommendations to ensure a thriving Canadian music industry. It first reviews technology trends facilitating the electronic distribution of sound recordings, including digital technologies related to production, manufacturing, distribution, and delivery of recordings. It then develops three scenarios for the deployment of new technologies and analyzes their likelihood of emergence and their respective industry impacts & policy consequences. These scenarios involve the incremental replacement of traditional physical distribution by electronic distribution to the retailer; bypassing the traditional distribution system through electronic distribution via on-line services; and the migration of digital broadcasting to the home delivery of sound recordings in the context of a transaction form. For each scenario, existing & planned initiatives, technological improvements & barriers, and marketing challenges & opportunities are discussed. The final section assesses industry impacts and policy considerations, and includes an overview of the dynamics of the music industry & components of the sound recording industry, and estimated impacts on composers, performers, record companies, music publishers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and the structure of the English- and French-language sectors of the industry.
