Download or read book The Sounds of Place written by Denise Von Glahn and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composers like Charles Ives, Duke Ellington, Aaron Copland, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich created works that indelibly commemorated American places. Denise Von Glahn analyzes the soundscapes of fourteen figures whose "place pieces" tell us much about the nation's search for its own voice and about its ever-changing sense of self. She connects each composer's feelings about the United States and their reasons for creating a piece to the music, while analyzing their compositional techniques, tunes, and styles. Approaching the compositions in chronological order, Von Glahn reveals how works that celebrated the wilderness gave way to music engaged with humanity's influence--benign and otherwise--on the landscape, before environmentalism inspired a return to nature themes in the late twentieth century. Wide-ranging and astute, The Sounds of Place explores high art music's role in the making of national myth and memory.

Book excerpt: The editor of the bestselling poetry anthologies How to Love the World and The Path to Kindness presents a collection of highly accessible, uplifting poetry celebrating the small wonders and peaceful moments of everyday life. James Crews, editor of two best-selling poetry anthologies, How to Love the World and The Path to Kindness, presents an all-new collection of highly accessible poems on the theme of celebrating moments of wonder and peace in everyday life. As Crews writes in the introduction: "[A] deep love for the world is present in every one of the poems gathered in this book. Wonder calls us back to the curiosity we are each born with, and it makes us want to move closer to what sparks our attention. Wonder opens our senses and helps us stay in touch with a humbling sense of our own human smallness in the face of unexpected beauty and the delicious mysteries of life on this planet." The anthology features a foreword by Nikita Gill and a carefully curated selection of poems from a diverse range of authors, including Native American poets Joy Harjo, Linda Hogan, Kimberly Blaeser, and Joseph Bruchac, and BIPOC writers Ross Gay, Julia Alvarez, and Toi Derricotte. Crews features new poems from popular writers such as Natalie Goldberg, Mark Nepo, Ted Kooser, Naomi Shihab Nye, Jane Hirshfield, and Jacqueline Suskin, along with selections from emerging poets. Readers are guided in exploring the meaning and essence of the poems through a series of reflective pauses scattered through the pages and reading group questions in the back. This anthology offers the perfect intersection for the growing number of readers interested in mindful living and bringing poetry into their everyday lives.

Book Phonons Theory and Experiments III

Download or read book Phonons Theory and Experiments III written by Peter Brüesch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of this treatment, Phonons: Theory and Experiments I, was devoted to the basic concepts of the physics of phonons and to a study of models for interatomic forces. The second volume, Phonons: Theory and Experiments II, contains a study of experimental techniques and the inter pretation of experimental results. In the present third volume we treat a number of phenomena which are directly related to phonons. The aim of this book is to bridge the gap between theory and experi ment. An attempt has been made to present the descriptive as well as the analytical aspects of the topics. Although emphasis is placed on the role of phonons in the different topics, most chapters also contain a general intro duction into the specific subject. The book is addressed to experimentalists and to theoreticians working in the vast field of dynamical properties of solids. It will also prove useful to graduate students starting research in this or related fields. The choice of the topics treated was partly determined by the author's own activity in these areas. This is particularly the case for the chapters dealing with phonons in one-dimensional metals, disordered systems, super ionic conductors and certain newer aspects of ferroelectricity and melting. I am very grateful to my colleagues J. Bernasconi, V.T. Hochli and 1.

Book Shimmering Images

  • ISBN : 1478004509
  • Pages : 157 pages

Download or read book Shimmering Images written by Eliza Steinbock and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Shimmering Images Eliza Steinbock traces how cinema offers alternative ways to understand gender transitions through a specific aesthetics of change. Drawing on Barthes's idea of the “shimmer” and Foucault's notion of sex as a mirage, the author shows how sex and gender can appear mirage-like on film, an effect they label shimmering. Steinbock applies the concept of shimmering—which delineates change in its emergent form as well as the qualities of transforming bodies, images, and affects—to analyses of films that span time and genre. These include examinations of the fantastic and phantasmagorical shimmerings of sex change in Georges Méliès's nineteenth-century trick films and Lili Elbe's 1931 autobiographical writings and photomontage in Man into Woman. Steinbock also explores more recent documentaries, science fiction, and pornographic and experimental films. Presenting a cinematic philosophy of transgender embodiment that demonstrates how shimmering images mediate transitioning, Steinbock not only offers a corrective to the gender binary orientation of feminist film theory; they open up new means to understand trans ontologies and epistemologies as emergent, affective, and processual.

Book The Spiritual Human

  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book The Spiritual Human written by Elise Fee and published by Inner Child Press. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PrefaceAs with everything in my life now, this book is the product of inspiration - inspiration that bubbled up within me, first as a few poems appearing in my blog, then as nudges to submit some of my poetry to contests (which resulted in winning a third place award and publishing contract), and finally as visions of how to organize this book. Why poetry? That's a great question and certainly one I've asked myself. I've always enjoyed writing, but typically it was prose, with the occasional silly rhyming poem created for a niece's birthday. For a year, I enjoyed writing my daily blog sharing my thoughts and perspectives on life. So it came as a surprise to me when suddenly poetry started flowing from my fingers, seeking expression and form. I watched as the poems easily conveyed emotions, energies and concepts in ways that my prose didn't. When the vision came for the organization of the book, I marveled at the way life had arranged everything so perfectly - 90% of the poems I had written would work together to create a guide book, a poetic guide to life on Earth. By using poetry to convey complex concepts via simple stories and analogies, The Spiritual Human would offer readers a practical (yet melodious) resource on how to "do life" successfully as a human being. We begin by delving into the human scene that we all experience, followed by an exploration of our diverse, and many times confusing, emotions. Then we journey into self-love, which is a prerequisite for everything that follows. When we value and love ourselves, we are ready to learn new tools and techniques for cultivating awareness and a new perspective on life - so we can begin to enjoy life. Then it's time to reach out toward others, to expand our circle of love even wider. With a supportive loving community in place, we are ready to understand what it is to have true, intimate soul love with a partner. And as we live from a place of love for ourselves, our community, and our life mate, we can step even deeper into the ocean of love as we begin to understand how we are all connected; that, in fact, we are all one. Finally, we grasp what it means to live peacefully and happily, following our internal knowing, and accepting life just as it is. We learn how to merge the human and the spiritual aspects of ourselves, to live fully as a spirit in a human body - to be a spiritual human.I offer this poetic guide to life on Earth as a gift of love, from my heart to yours. I hope that you feel the words touching your soul, penetrating your every cell, and awakening the vibrant, magnificent essence at your core. It is your divine birthright to be happy, to feel fulfilled, to love and be loved, to know peace in every circumstance, and to delight in being alive. I invite you to use this guide book to transform your life, empower yourself, and live your joy. With my deepest love,Elise

Book excerpt: Routledge Performance Practitioners is a series of introductory guides to the key theatre-makers of the last century. Each volume explains the background to and the work of one of the major influences on twentieth- and twenty-first-century performance. Antonin Artaud was an active theatre-maker and theorist whose ideas reshaped contemporary approaches to performance. This is the first book to combine an overview of Artaud’s life with a focus on his work as an actor and director; an analysis of his key theories, including the Theatre of Cruelty and the double; a consideration of his work as a director at the Théâtre Alfred Jarry and his production of Strindberg’s A Dream Play; and a series of practical exercises to develop an approach to theatre based on Artaud’s key ideas. As a first step towards critical understanding and as an initial exploration before going on to further, primary research, Routledge Performance Practitioners are unbeatable value for today’s student.

Book Bwana There s a Body in the Bath

Download or read book Bwana There s a Body in the Bath written by Tony Park and published by Ingwe Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Shanghai and shipped to England as a child, Peter Whitehead then made his way to Australia, solo, at the age of 13 in 1938, in order to save his family money. Alone and working in near slave-like conditions as a farm labourer, Peter learned the art of breaking wild horses and so began a lifelong love affair with animals. After wartime service as a horse breaker for the army and a gunner on a Liberator bomber, Peter headed to Africa and a richly varied career as an agricultural officer, national parks ranger, big game hunter, animal wrangler and rancher. He worked on the sets of several big-name movies, including Hatari! with John Wayne, and handled lions for the smash hit film, Born Free. Peter survived two aircraft crashes, as well as encounters with man-eating lions, zombie witches, and killer hippos, and nearly drowned in a crocodile infested river. Along the way, he also helped save an endangered species and found a woman who would put up with him. Bwana, there’s a body in the bath is Peter’s story of nearly a century of incredible adventures.
