It was situated not very far from that succession of Dutch-like towns on the Fife coast which, before their prosperity fell under the death-blow of the Union, one of the King Jamies had sharply characterised as a golden fringe to a beggar's. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scottish Songs, Vol. 1 of 2 From these motives, and with these views, the present' collection was undertaken. It will be found to contain'all the songs written in and regarding Scotland, which have either the me rit of being Old and characteristic, or that of being new and popular. No original songs are admitted, as in most other collections because it is inconsistent with the idea of a collection of the best songs of a country, that some should be accepted which have not yet endured the or deal of public taste. In an Introductory Essay, a view is given of all the facts known with cer tainty regarding Scottish Song in general and to almost all the songs are appended notes, con taining such anecdotes, and other pieces of in formation, referring to them individually, as the editor considered necessary for their illus tration, or at least mentioning the earliest print ed collection in which they are known to have; appeared. No songs of an indecorous nature, are introduced while from one or two others which are included, the objectionable passages. Are silently omitted; the editor judging it bet ter to fit his book, by that very slight sacrifice, for the use of the tasteful, the fair, and the young, than to consult the wishes of the antiquary; who, after all, has but little reason to complain of such violations, seeing that the songs are to be found, in all their native boau ty, in the collections of Ramsay and Herd. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scottish Songstress: Caroline Baroness Nairne So the inscription stands on her obelisk, and the full, rich nature-life all around on that glorious summer day spoke of immortality for her as for her verse. We could think of how her life grew, - from the day she was named Caroline in honour of the exiled Prince Charles, - through the pretty Miss Car of the school room, till she blossomed into the Flower of Strathearn and, better still, how her mind grew in her songs. The auld pear tree is there, and to her, as to it, a ring of age meant a year of growth. There is the winding Earn, the auld house, the auld dial; but the sweet singer is awa'! The subject of her song, more beautiful than ever, framed in the setting of this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ballads of Scotland, Vol. 1 of 2 I believe that every editor of a work of this kind must have felt that in his first edition many errors and omissions were certain to occur. Having had the advantage of much sound and intelligent criticism from gentlemen who were evidently well acquainted with the subject, and enthusiasts in our older literature, I have been enabled in some places materially to improve the text; while, from private sources, I have received much information of a very valuable kind. The work has been subjected to a strict revision, and six additional ballads - two of them taken down from recitation - have been inserted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Songs of Scotland, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 1 of 4: With an Introduction and Notes, Historical and Critical, and Characters of the Lyric Poets I am inclined to claim for the very oldest of our Scot tish songs, a moderate antiquity and a humble origin. The greatest lover of Scotland, will be unable to find the wild flowers of her lyric verse floating farther up the stream of her history than the reign of Robert Bruce and the fondest admirer of her song cannot point to a surer source for its purest and most lasting strains, than to our herdsmen and warriors. Those Who wish to find its origin among the wild and shadowy traditions of the original people of the land, ought to tell us why the. Book excerpt: The Singer and the Scribe brings together studies of the European ballad from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century by major authorities in the field and is of interest to students of European literature, popular traditions and folksong. It offers an original view of the development of the ballad by focusing on the interplay and interdependence of written and oral transmission, including studies of modern singers and their repertoires and of the role of the audience in generating a literary product which continues to live in performance. While using specific case studies the contributors systematically extend their reflections on the ballad as song and as poetry to draw broader conclusions. Covering the Hispanic world, including the Sephardic tradition, Scandinavia, The Netherlands, Greece, Russia, England and Scotland the essays also demonstrate the interconnections of a European tradition beyond national boundaries.
