Book The Song cycle frauenliebe Und leben by Robert Schumann

Download or read book The Song cycle frauenliebe Und leben by Robert Schumann written by Jocelyn Kaye Jensen and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The song cycle, Frauenliebe und-leben, by Robert Alexander Schumann was selected to be performed in recital and for purposes of this recital report. Several objectives were to be accomplished in writing this paper. Among these was the intent to achieve a better understanding of the complete poetic and musical lyricism unique to Schumann's songs, particularly those composed in 1840, the period in which the Frauenliebe und-leben were produced. In addition, an analysis of each of the eight songs in the cycle was undertaken to enable the performer and listener to have better technical understanding of the musical ideas invoked by Schumann and utilized in his songs. A cultural, political, and social overview of the Romantic Period of music during which this composer was working were incorporated in this report. This portion was included with the purpose of adding understanding of existing attitudes and stylistic characteristics of this time in history. The objectives generally discussed in the preceding paragraph involved research of an historical nature, supplemented by the individual dissection and analysis of each of the songs within the Frauenliebe und-leben song cycle. The recital-report offered this student and performer of music a scholarly approach to musical research, allowing a broadening of personal growth and greater respect for the works of Robert Alexander Schumann.

Book excerpt: From the introductory. ....In many songs, Schumann uses the piano to provide beautiful and expressive preludes and postludes. In some songs the eloquence of the piano in the postlude is so great as to make this the most important part of the lyric. For an example of this let the reader examine the exquisite instrumental coda to Die alten, bösen Lieder (The Songs of Bitter Sorrow) , p. 131. This is, indeed, the coda of the entire cycle, and it is the most fragrant blossoming of this branch of Schumann's art. But Schumann also knew when to subordinate the piano so much as to make it a mere background. Note the wonderful effect of the soft chords in Ich hab' im 'Traum geweinet (In Dreams my Tears were falling) , p. 125. In short, as Dr.Spitta has admirably said in his fine article in Grove's Dictionary of Music, in "Schumann's songs the proper function of the pianoforte is to reveal some deep and secret meaning which it is beyond the power of words, even of sung words, to express." That Schumann found the true mission of the song may readily be learned by an examination of the texts which he chose for setting. He never failed to select words embodying the true lyric spirit, the voicing of nature and love. The field of human emotion and thought as viewed through the eyes of youth was the theatre of his fancy, and he found abundant material for his inspiration in the splendid outpour of lyric poetry from the young romanticists of Germany. EichendorfFs contemplations of nature touched his mind no less than Heine's marvellous analyses of feeling; and when he came to the setting of Chamisso's persuasive verses in the cycle entitled Frauenliebe und Leben, opus 42, he unquestionably opened up a wealth of emotion not altogether disclosed by the poet. When it was necessary to be humorous, Schumann had a fund of humor quite irresistible. Note the genuine humor of Ein Jüngling liebt ein Mädchen (A Youth oft Loves a Maiden) , p. 123, and the bewitching archness of Aufträge, p. 150. Such things are the conceptions of a true master laboring in a most congenial field, and all contentions that Schumann was merely a follower of Schubert must fail in the presence of such convincing demonstrations of power and originality. Schumann was always a romanticist, and he was unceasingly introspective. He looked into his own heart and wrote, and this is the great secret of the universal appeal of his songs....

This book was released on 2000-11-30 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new study draws on analysis, literary criticism, and source studies to propose a new conception of the nineteenth-century romantic cycle. Rather than a unified whole, the cycle is seen as a fragmentary and open-ended form, which enables Schumann to express the romantic themes of transcendence and ineffability in musical terms.

Book Robert Schumann s Frauenliebe und Leben and Dominick Argento s From the Diary of Virginia Woolf

Download or read book Robert Schumann s Frauenliebe und Leben and Dominick Argento s From the Diary of Virginia Woolf written by Jeanette Marie Fontaine and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Schumann's Frauenliebe und -leben and Dominick Argento's From the Diary of Virginia Woolf are two song cycles that enjoy frequent performances. Argento modeled the large-scale form and dramatic concept of his own work after Schumann's cycle: eight songs depicting chronological moments from a woman's life feature a return in the last song to thematic material from the first song. With this comparative analysis of these two song cycles, the author argues that the two works have more in common than a broad schematic design. The song cycles are linked on many important musical and dramatic levels. Due to the preponderance in both Frauenliebe und -leben and From the Diary of Virginia Woolf of strophic- and rondo-like writing, there is an obsessive quality that becomes apparent, though the object of obsession is different in each of the cycles. In the Schumann cycle, it is the patriarchal view that a woman's obsession should be her husband, family, and home life. While in the Argento cycle, it is an artist's obsession with her writing and her own thoughts on the complexity of life that directs the listener. This document examines the similarities and differences between the two song cycles, primarily through musical means but taking into account text and drama, as well. Aspects such as text, concept, large- and small-scale formal structures, recurring motivic material, accompaniment, character and mood, and performance considerations all bear some degree of similarity between the two cycles and are examined here to show why they effectively complement one another in performance. A thorough understanding of both works and how they relate to each other also helps to inform the artists' performance.

Book Poet s Love

Download or read book Poet s Love written by Gerald Moore and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Following his Schubert's Song Cycles, published in 1975, Gerald Moore, doyen of the world's accompanists, writes with penetration, feeling and wit on the singing and playing of the songs of Robert Schumann. For over half a century he has played them with the greatest artists of our time, and in this book he discusses questions of ensemble, balance, colour, rhythm and, above all, poetic understanding and sensitivity. In the hierarchy of song Schumann was a descendant of Franz Schubert and inherited that master's genius. The book naturally embraces 'Poet's Love', one of the most sublime cycles ever written, 'Woman's Love and Life' and other cycles. But also included are a hundred miscellaneous songs, some famous and others much less well known. In Dr Moore's opinion there are many which are unjustifiably neglected and he makes an eloquent plea on their behalf. He asks, for instance, who has ever heard Schumann's version of Goethe's Wanderers Nachtlied ('Wanderer's Nightsong') performed. It has been set unforgettably by Schubert, but Schumann's realisation is also of a rare beauty. Then there is the statuesque 'Melancholy', Purcell-like in nobility, and the blood-curdling ballads which Schumann sometimes liked to avoid but thrillingly conceived in 'The Hostile Brothers' and 'The Glove'. His delightful humour is shown in 'Hey ho, the Wind and the Rain' under the title Schusslied der Narren. These essays, with musical examples, are inspired by love of the songs, but the author is no euphemist. Sensing what may appear to him as an occasional weakness, he suggests how singer and pianist may seek to disguise it. The aim of the author is to help the performer and give added enjoyment to the listener. The text includes over 200 musical examples." --Dust jacket.

Book The Elements of a Perfected Song Cycle

Download or read book The Elements of a Perfected Song Cycle written by Kristen M. Christopherson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lecture recital is a quintessential representation of the music student's knowledge and skill in a synthesis of performance and instruction. This thesis will encompass the extensive research and preparation necessary to perform a lecture recital about Robert Schumann's song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben (A Woman's Love and Life). This marvelous work is an excellent example of Schumann's enhancement of the song cycle genre. A standard work in soprano repertoire, Frauenliebe und Leben provides the opportunity for extensive musicality through vocal coloring, legato lines, ornamented turns, various phrasal structures, and clear dramatic direction. In addition to its rich history and theory, precise vocal technique and musical interpretation are necessary to present a successful performance of this piece.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A singer in an evening dress, a grand piano. A modest-sized audience, mostly well-dressed and silver-haired, equipped with translation booklets. A program consisting entirely of songs by one or two composers. This is the way of the Lieder recital these days. While it might seem that this style of performance is a long-standing tradition, German Song Onstage demonstrates that it is not. For much of the 19th century, the songs of Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, and Brahms were heard in the home, salon, and, no less significantly, on the concert platform alongside orchestral and choral works. A dedicated program was rare, a dedicated audience even more so. The Lied was a genre with both more private and more public associations than is commonly recalled. The contributors to this volume explore a broad range of venues, singers, and audiences in distinct places and time periods—including the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Germany—from the mid-19th century through the early 20th century. These historical case studies are set alongside reflections from a selection of today's leading musicians, offering insights on current Lied practices that will inform future generations of performers, scholars, and connoisseurs. Together these case studies unsettle narrow and elitist assumptions about what it meant and still means to present German song onstage by providing a transnational picture of historical Lieder performance, and opening up discussions about the relationship between history and performance today.
