Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soldier's Dying Visions: And Other Poems and Hymns The Poems and Hymns contained in this volume were written in fragments of time during five-and-twenty years of a busy life. The first three were read at Social Parochial Entertainments. Perhaps I may be presumptuous in hoping that a larger public will to some extent endorse the approval which they received in a more limited and indulgent circle. Some of the hymns have already appeared in various Hymn Books for public worship, and one little hymn has found its way into most English Hymnals. I have always readily acceded to the request for their being thus used, and esteem it a privilege that anything I have written should be thought suitable for so high and sacred a purpose. Download or read book Militant Visions written by Elizabeth Reich and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2016-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Militant Visions examines how, from the 1940s to the 1970s, the cinematic figure of the black soldier helped change the ways American moviegoers saw black men, for the first time presenting African Americans as vital and integrated members of the nation. In the process, Elizabeth Reich reveals how the image of the proud and powerful African American serviceman was crafted by an unexpected alliance of government propagandists, civil rights activists, and black filmmakers. Contextualizing the figure in a genealogy of black radicalism and internationalism, Reich shows the evolving images of black soldiers to be inherently transnational ones, shaped by the displacements of diaspora, Third World revolutionary philosophy, and a legacy of black artistry and performance. Offering a nuanced reading of a figure that was simultaneously conservative and radical, Reich considers how the cinematic black soldier lent a human face to ongoing debates about racial integration, black internationalism, and American militarism. Militant Visions thus not only presents a new history of how American cinema represented race, but also demonstrates how film images helped to make history, shaping the progress of the civil rights movement itself.

Book The Paranormal Story of a Dying Soldier

Download or read book The Paranormal Story of a Dying Soldier written by Ruben Amaro Soriano and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jose Albino Lucio Amaro! A few minutes before his death, his grandson, a young doctor, called him by his name. Upon hearing it, the old man became confused and in his mind flashed the supernatural works of the gray and scaly angels of death he had seen lurking in the war eighty-three years ago, devouring dead French and Mexican soldiers. With these memories deeply etched in his mind, he had been preparing for death in the midtwentieth century. The somber sound of tolling bells from the atrium of Pueblas cathedral announced the death of a war hero and brought him memories of a distant day, May 5, 1862, when the tolling bells announced the commencement of the war. Without realizing that it was his grandson calling him, he cried out in response, Present, General Zaragoza! The voice of the old man quivered in the last breath of life that remained in him. He answered with the same or perhaps greater amount of ardor in his words when he uttered the same words on that unforgettable day of his youth when he was among those forming rows of thousands of peasant soldiers that comprised the disadvantaged Mexican army. All of them held rusting weapons and swore their allegiance to the motherland in front of the Mexican flag that quietly waved in the thin air of the morning inside the strongholds of Loreto and Guadalupe on that cloudy and gloomy Cinco de Mayo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An absolutely harrowing first-person account of the 94th Infantry Division’s bold campaign to break through Hitler’s “impregnable” Siegfried line at the end of World War II Eighteen-year-old William Foley was afraid the war would be over before he got there, but the rifleman was sent straight to the front lines, arriving January 25, 1945–just in time to join the 94th Infantry Division poised at Hitler’s legendary West Wall. By the time Foley finally managed to grab a few hours sleep three nights later, he’d already fought in a bloody attack that left sixty percent of his battalion dead or wounded. That was just the beginning of one of the toughest, bloodiest challenges the 94th would ever face: breaking through the Siegfried Line. Now, in Visions from a Foxhole, Foley recaptures that desperate, nerve-shattering struggle in all its horror and heroism. Features the author’s artwork of his fellow soldiers and battle scenes, literally sketched from the foxhole Look for these remarkable stories of American courage at war BEHIND HITLER’S LINES The True Story of the Only Soldier to Fight for Both America and the Soviet Union in World War II Thomas H.
