Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duty of the Free States: Second Part I respectfully ask your attention, fellow-citizens of the Free States, to a subject of great and pressing importance. The case of the Creole, taken by itself, or separated from the principles which are complicated with it, however it might engage my feelings, would not have moved me to the present address. I am not writing to plead the cause of a hundred or more men, scattered through the West Indies, and claimed as slaves. In a world abounding with so much wrong and wo, we at this distance can spend but a few thoughts on these strangers. I rejoice that they are free; I trust that they will remain so; and with these feelings, I dismiss them from my thoughts. The case of the Creole involves great and vital principles, and as such I now invite to it your serious consideration. The case is thus stated in the letter of the American Secretary of State, to the American Minister in London: "It appears that the brig Creole, of Richmond, Virginia, Ensor master, bound to New Orleans, sailed from Hampton roads with a cargo of merchandise, principally tobacco and slaves, about one hundred and thirty-five in number. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fifteenth Annual Report of the American Society for Colonizing the Free People of Colour of the United States: With an Appendix I am aware, that the partial failure-of the establishment at Sierra Leone may be quoted in opposition to these encouraging views. But it must not be forgotten, that Sierra Leone is an establishment, totally difl'erent in its origin and character from Liberia. It is formed from the crews of the recaptured slave ships, helpless savages ofa hundred different tribes, thrown, without preparation, upon the coast, and without any principle of order or self-government, subjected to all the evils of a remote and neglected military establishment. The progress that has been made at Liberia is, on the contrary, all that could have been hoped. A tract of coast two hundred miles North and South, and twenty or thirty East and West; a population of two thousand emigrants, and several thousands of the native tribes who have voluntarily sought the protection of the Colo ny; with schools and churches, and all the institutions of civilized life, - a great state of prosperity and every encouraging prospect, - this surely is not slow progress for ten years. Book Origin of the Names of the States of the Union Classic Reprint

Download or read book Origin of the Names of the States of the Union Classic Reprint written by Hamilton B. Staples and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin of the Names of the States of the Union I Have the honor to lay before the Society a series of notes, the result of a limited research, upon the origin of the names of the States of the Union. I was led to suppose the subject might prove interesting from the circumstance that, some time ago, it had attracted the attention of the Society as a fit subject of investigation, but for some reason no definite inquiry has been prosecuted. I regret that in respect to the origin of the names of several States, my paper will simply present an array of conflicting authorities. I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to the acting librarian of the Society, and to Mr. Green, the accomplished librarian of the Free Public Library of Worcester, for the means to prosecute these inquiries. In considering the subject, it will be convenient to divide the States into groups, starting with the original thirteen States, as the first group, and in respect to this group, to refer to the States in the order of the coast line from North to South. The origin of the name of New Hampshire is very simple. The original territory conveyed by patent of the Plymouth Company to John Mason in 1629, was named by him after Hampshire County in England.
