Book Handbook Of Biomaterials Evaluation

Download or read book Handbook Of Biomaterials Evaluation written by Andreas F von Recum and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-12-18 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook addresses the needs of those who are involved in inventing, developing, and testing implants and are concerned about the interactions between biomaterial and body tissue. The authors explore the physical, chemical, mechanical and regulatory considerations of synthetic materials used in surgical and implant procedures, and how these factors impact the latest developments and new approaches. This updated edition provides the biomaterials professional with necessary information on a range of issues, including bulk characterization, surface evaluations, toxicological evaluations, in vitro methods for safety evaluation, methods for evaluating materials in special applications, surgical considerations, systems implantology, soft and hard tissue history, regulatory aspects, and clinical trials.

Book Biomaterials in Plastic Surgery

Download or read book Biomaterials in Plastic Surgery written by W Peters and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-07-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employed for both cosmetic and reconstructive purposes, breast implants are one of the most widely-used and controversial prostheses available. The development of safe, reliable products is vital to the future of this important field of surgery. Biomaterials in plastic surgery reviews the history, materials and safety issues associated with breast implants.Beginning with an introduction to the history of biomaterials used for breast augmentation, Biomaterials in plastic surgery goes on to discuss development issues. It then discusses the chemistry and physical properties of biomedical silicones before reviewing cohesive gel and polyurethane foam implants. The book concludes by analysing the epidemiological evidence on the safety issues relating to breast implants, followed by a review of retrieval and analysis of breast implants emphasizing strength, durability and failure mechanisms. With its distinguished editors and international team of expert contributors, Biomaterials in plastic surgery is an important guide for surgeons, manufacturers and all those researching this important field. - Comprehensively examines the history, materials and safety issues associated with breast implants - Provides an overview of the history of biomaterials used for breast augmentation and goes on to discuss the development and chemical and physical properties of biomedical silicones - Reviews cohesive gel breast implants and polyurethane foam breast implants

Book Retrieval and Analysis of Orthopaedic Implants

Download or read book Retrieval and Analysis of Orthopaedic Implants written by Allan Weinstein and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Retrieval and Analysis of Orthopaedic Implants: Proceedings of a Symposium Held at the National Bureau of Standards, Gaithersburg, Maryland, March 5, 1976 Welcome to the National Bureau of Standards (nbs) and to the symposium on Retrieval and Analysis of Orthopaedic Implants. We at nbs are pleased to cosponsor this symposium with the Food and Drug Administration, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Orthopaedic Surgical Manufacturers Association, and the Society for Biomaterials. The list of organizations is long and impressive, to be sure. I believe, however, that this multiple sponsorship attests to both the importance of the subject and the fact that a wide variety of competences and interests must be brought to gether if we are to reach our common goal of improving the performance of orthopedic implants, I personally am pleased to appear before you to launch this symposium aimed at achieving this goal. I have felt for many years that nbs could make unique contributions by helping to provide standards, test methods, and data that would enable manufacturers, surgeons, and agencies of Government to operate from common bases. My deputy, Dr. Emanuel Horowitz, and I have sought to build a program to meet the needs of the user community. Dr. Horowitz has been directly involved in many aspects of orthopedic implant development and has worked toward accelerating the development of much needed standards. Our conviction that nbs could make a unique contribution in this area is based upon a number of factors: our long tradi tion for work in failure analysis; our long association with the American Dental Association; and our multidisciplinary laboratory built around competences in chemistry and physics and focused on the properties of metals, ceramics, and polymers. Though we believe that our competence base could be effectively utilized in improving the performance of implant materials, we are very mindful of the fact that standards and measurements are only a part of the problem. For this reason we have sought from the very first to operate through such groups and agencies as those represented here today.
