Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Teachings of the Jewish Prophets: A Study in Biblical Sociology We are in the midst of a renaissance in the study of the Old Testament scriptures. The evidence of this fact is to be found in the large number of vol umes that are now appearing from the press, deal ing with many phases of Jewish literature. This awakening is largely the result of recent efforts to relate the ethical, legislative and social teachings oi Israel to the problems and conditions of the pres ent day. The content of the prophetic literature is rich in suggestiveness and social teaching for an age like our own. The realization of this fact makes it desirable to search out and evaluate this social con tent. This point of view has given a new sig nificance to the work of the Jewish prophet, and stimulated a new interest in his message to the world. Download or read book The Social Institutions and Ideals of the Bible written by Theodore Gerald Soares and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Institutions, and Ideals of the Bible: A Study of the Elements of Hebrew, Life in Their Development From the Beginnings to the Time of Christ, and of the Social Teachings of the Prophets, of the Sages, and of Jesus For some time past there has been a growing conviction of the need of a more complete and comprehensive study of the Bible in all the colleges. Quite recently the matter has received new emphasis and practical direction. A complete course of Bible study has been outlined by a joint committee representing the Eastern and Western sections of the Association of College Instructors in the Bible, the departments of colleges and universities and of teacher training of the Religious Education Association, the Student Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A., and Sunday School Council. In harmony with the action just noted The Abingdon Press has arranged for the prompt publication of a series of Bible study texts. The complete course will include the following books: Old Testament History, by Prof. Ismar J. Peritz, of Syracuse University; New Testament History, by Dr. Harris Franklin Rall, President of Iliff School of Theology; The Bible as Literature, by Prof. Irving F. Wood and Prof. Elihu Grant, of Smith College; Social Institutions and Ideals of the Bible, by Prof. Theodore G. Soares, University of Chicago; and The History and Principles of Religious Education, by Prof. F. H. Swift, University of Minnesota. The volumes on New Testament History and The Bible as Literature have been in use during the college year 1914- 1915. Professor Peritz's volume on Old Testament History and Professor Soares' Social Institutions and Ideals of the Bible are now published. The last book in the series, The History and Principles of Religious Education by Professor Swift, is in preparation and will be ready for use in the second semester of 1915-1916. Book Kabbalistic Teachings of the Female Prophets

Download or read book Kabbalistic Teachings of the Female Prophets written by J. Zohara Meyerhoff Hieronimus and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-07-21 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spiritual teachings of Israel’s biblical prophetesses from a kabbalistic perspective • Explores the lives and symbolic significance of seven female prophets: Sarah, Miriam, Devorah, Chanah, Avigail, Chuldah, and Esther • Uses the gematria of Jewish metaphysics to demonstrate that prophecy is a mystical initiatory path by which Divine Will is made known, not only a tool for telling the future • Presents practical applications of kabbalistic teachings for spiritual development The seven prophetesses of Israel--Sarah, Miriam, Devorah, Chanah, Avigail, Chuldah, and Esther--lived between 1800 and 350 BCE. Their combined lives reflect a kabbalistic path of spiritual evolution that is as pertinent to our lives today as it was for the biblical communities in which they lived. From her studies of the Torah and classical gematria, Zohara Hieronimus shows that each prophetess is linked to a Sefirah on the kabbalistic Tree of Life: from creation (Sarah) through learning correct moral action (Devorah) to the promise of redemption and ultimately resurrection (Esther). Using the stories of their lives and teachings, Hieronimus reveals the relationship of each prophetess to the seven days of the week, the seven sacred species of Israel, the human body, and Jewish holidays and rituals. This book presents the kabbalistic teachings of these holy women and what they reveal about the initiatory path of individual development and redemption. The seven prophetesses show that every person has a part to play in the repair of the world, and Hieronimus gives a practical set of maps and spiritual guidelines for that journey.

Book The Social Teachings of the Prophets and Jesus Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Social Teachings of the Prophets and Jesus Classic Reprint written by Charles Foster Kent and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Teachings of the Prophets and Jesus The discovery that the great prophets and founders of Judaism and Christianity were above all else social teachers and reformers is rapidly revolutionising the study of the Bible. The Hebrew prophets and Jesus speak to us to-day more directly and convincingly than they did even to their contemporaries, for we are far more keenly alive to the importance of the social problems which they were seeking to solve. To appreciate fully the social principles which they laid down it is necessary first to become acquainted with the personality of each of these prophets and with the immediate political and social conditions with which they were dealing. Studied in the light of their historical background, these teachings can then be readily interpreted into universal terms and used as a solvent for the social problems of to-day. The social teachings of the Bible are so deeply embedded in the Old and New Testament writings that they are not easily accessible to the general reader. Those of the prophets and of their practical interpreters, the priests and sages, have usually been treated separately from those of Jesus and his immediate followers. As a matter of fact, Jesus and Paul based their social teachings directly upon those of the earlier prophets. Without the final synthesis and interpretation which Jesus gave to these earlier teachings, they are disconnected and incomplete. To be clearly understood both the teachings of the prophets and those of Jesus and Paul must be studied together as parts of a genetic whole. The chief aims, therefore, of this volume are to single out the important social teachings of the Bible, to translate them into clear English, and then to classify and present them so that they may be intelligently studied in the light of their historical setting and development.
