Download or read book The Direction of Human Evolution written by Edwin Grant Conklin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Direction of Human Evolution The lectures which constitute this volume were given at the University of North Carolina in May, 1920, under the terms of the "John Calvin McNair Lectureship on the mutual bearings of science and religion upon each other." One or two of them were also delivered at Northwestern University, Mt. Holyoke College, Western University, and the University of Texas. The topic chosen for this series is one which the bearings of science upon religion are most vital, namely, the origin and destiny of the human race. I shall attempt to present certain conclusions of science regarding the evolution of man, and shall venture to draw from these conclusions certain inferences with regard to the future of the human race, but I have no desire to force others to accept these conclusions or inferences. The spirit of science is freedom to seek and to find truth, freedom to hold and to teach any view for which there is rational evidence, recognition that natural knowledge is incomplete and subject to revision, and that there is no legitimate compulsion in science except the compulsion of evidence. Book Evolution s Arrow

Download or read book Evolution s Arrow written by John Stewart and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution's Arrow argues that evolution is directional and progressive, and that this has major consequences for humanity. Without resort to teleology, the book demonstrates that evolution moves in the direction of producing cooperative organisations of greater scale and evolvability - evolution has organised molecular processes into cells, cells into organisms, and organisms into societies. The book founds this position on a new theory of the evolution of cooperation. It shows that self-interest at the level of the genes does not prevent cooperation from increasing as evolution unfolds. Evolution progresses by discovering ways to build cooperative organisations out of self-interested individuals. The book also shows that evolution itself has evolved. Evolution has progressively improved the ability of evolutionary mechanisms to discover effective adaptations. And it has produced new and better mechanisms. Evolution's Arrow uses this understanding of the direction of evolution to identify the next great steps in the evolution of life on earth - the steps that humanity must take if we are to continue to be successful in evolutionary terms. A key step for humanity is to increase the scale and evolvability of our societies, eventually forming a unified and cooperative society on the scale of the planet. We must also transform ourselves psychologically to become self-evolving organisms - organisms that are able to escape their biological and cultural past by adapting in whatever directions are necessary to achieve future evolutionary success.

Book The Social Direction of Evolution

Download or read book The Social Direction of Evolution written by William E. Kellicott and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-19 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book William E. Kellicott explains what eugenics is, and the changes its practice aims to achieve in human society. This edition includes the original charts and illustrations. Written to present a clear and concise overview for the benefit of the public, Kellicott's summation of eugenics outlines the reasons why it should be implemented in society. Its central purpose, to promote good qualities and characteristics in humans by selective breeding, is detailed. Kellicott identifies the biological foundations of eugenics, and floats ideas as to how it might be carried out. While the concept of eugenics has existed since antiquity, there was a resurgence of interest in the late 19th century. Then-recent discoveries in evolutionary theory and genetic science were considered to have legitimized eugenics as both socially and scientifically sound; consequently, influential voices in society and academia openly favored its practice on a wide scale.

This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Direction of Evolution: An Outline of the Science of Eugenics is a work by William E. Kellicott. Excerpt: "Eugenics has been defined as "the science of being well born." In the words of Sir Francis Galton, who may fairly be claimed as the founder of this newest of sciences, "Eugenics is the study of the agencies under social control, that may improve or impair the racial qualities of future generations, either physically or mentally." The idea of definitely undertaking to improve the innate characteristics of the human race has been expressed repeatedly through centuries—fancifully, seriously, hopefully, and now scientifically. Since the times of Theognis and of Plato the student of animate Nature has been aware of the possibility of the degradation or of the elevation of the human race-characters. The conditions under which life exists gradually change: the customs and ideals of societies change rapidly. Times inevitably come when, if we are to maintain or to advance our racial position, we find it necessary to change in an adaptive way our attitude toward these changing social relations and conditions of life. If we neglect to do this we go down in the racial struggle, as history so clearly and so repeatedly warns us."
