Book Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain

Download or read book Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain written by Yong Jin and published by Chinese University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story took place in Snowy Mountain in the coldest part of Manchuria, one Winter's morning in 1781. The Dragon Lodge party ran into the Horse Spring Banditry who were there to unearth a buried casket. They were waylaid yet by the Peking Overland Convoy. All three parties had designs on the metal casket, supposedly housing a poniard, which was an heirloom of the Martial Brotherhood. A monk arrived on the scene and the invited the parties to the eyrie on the summit. The lord of the eyrie happened to be away summoning help to fight Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain, who was scheduled to arrive on the summit at noon. While waiting, each one in the parties began recounting incidents which took place some twenty years before. The excitement, intrigue and action in these incidents are well dramatized, with one event firmly intertwining with others in the past, developing into a vendetta involving the offspring of several families. The story ends with a fight between Fox, the hero of the story, and his sworn enemy, but the result of the fight is untold, left to the imagination and creative power of individual readers.

Book excerpt: The rich context behind one of Andrew Wyeth’s most beloved and mysterious late paintings. Perhaps nowhere else is Andrew Wyeth’s highly distinctive style more palpable, or moving, than in Snow Hill. His masterful tempera painting of 1989 provides a visual and poetic summary of the Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, residents who had provided artistic inspiration at key points in Wyeth’s career. With the figures depicted in a snowy landscape high above Kuerner Farm, a property of great personal significance to the painter, this enigmatic composition resonates with an elegiac air. Among Wyeth’s most popular works, Snow Hill in some ways encapsulates the spirit of his entire career. James H. Duff, a close acquaintance of the artist for more than three decades, invites an expansive reading of the work, including the wide-ranging art historical influences on this singular American artist. Published in association with the Brandywine River Museum of Art, Chadds Ford, PA

Book Journal of a Tour Through Part of the Snowy Range of the Him l Mountains

Download or read book Journal of a Tour Through Part of the Snowy Range of the Him l Mountains written by James Baillie Fraser and published by . This book was released on 1820 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Baillie Fraser (1783-1856) was a Scot who in 1813 went to Kolkata (Calcutta) to join the family firm of Becher and Fraser. He remained there until 1820. In 1815, he accompanied his brother William, who was taking part in the Anglo-Nepalese War of 1814-16, on an expedition into the Garwhal Hills to find the sources of the Jumna and Ganges rivers. James and William Fraser were the first Europeans to reach many of the places they visited, which James vividly described in this account of the journey. He characterized the Gurkha soldiers whom the British were fighting as "stout, thick, well built men, in general; very active and strong for their size. They understand the use of the 'tulwār,' or saber, and prefer close fighting, giving an onset with a loud shout...." British officers were so impressed by the martial qualities of the Gurkhas that in 1817 the British East India Company began to employ Gurkha regiments in its forces.
