Book The Image of the Virgin Mary in the Akathistos Hymn

Download or read book The Image of the Virgin Mary in the Akathistos Hymn written by Leena Mari Peltomaa and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Akathistos Hymn, the most famous work of Byzantine hymnography, has been enshrined in the Orthodox liturgy since the year 626, and its image of the Virgin Mary has exerted a strong influence upon Marian poetry and literature. Anonymous, undated and highly rhetorical, the hymn has presented a challenge to scholars over the years. This study has been undertaken by an innovative method. The approach brings new insights to the era which brought forth the hymn, and the metaphorical image of the Virgin becomes conceptually accessible to the modern-day reader. The investigation leads to the conclusion that the Council of Ephesus (431) constitutes the most likely historical context for the hymn's composition. The book will be of value to all scholars of early Byzantine and Marian studies.

Book Studies on Eastern Orthodox Church Chant

Download or read book Studies on Eastern Orthodox Church Chant written by Svetlana Kujumdzieva and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-05 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the compilation of the different practices of Eastern Orthodox Chant, looking at the subject through various languages, practices, and liturgical books and letters. The subject of this book is also analysed through newly found, unique material, to provide the entire history of Eastern Orthodox Chant, from the ninth to the nineteenth centuries and approached through a number of different disciplines. The book consists of sixteen topics, grouped in four parts: Studies on Genre, Studies on Liturgical Books, Studies on Distinguished Men of Letters, and Studies on Bulgarian Orthodox Church Chant. The aim of the book is to present the Eastern chant as a phase in the evolution of Mediterranean art, which is the cradle of Graeco-Roman heritage. This complex study brings in a variety of sources to show the purpose of Eastern Orthodox Chant as strengthening the Christian faith during the Middle Ages and the revival of Balkan nationalism in the nineteenth century. This book will appeal to students and scholars alike, interested in liturgical musical books, liturgy, and chant repertory. Likewise, it will be of interest to those engaged in medieval and early modern history, music, and culture.

Book Selected Acathistos Hymns in Honour of the Theotokos

Download or read book Selected Acathistos Hymns in Honour of the Theotokos written by Lydia and published by . This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praying Acathistos-hymns is a widely spread and cherished custom of Orthodox Christians. Many of them add an Acathistos either of their own choice, or according to their specific needs or upon the advice of their spiritual father, to their morning or evening prayers. However, it's rather difficult for those who do not master Church-Slavonic or Byzantine Greek to understand what exactly is said or meant in the Acathistos. Therefore this book is a big enrichment, allowing them as well as those who want to become acquainted with this exceptional form of Orthodox devotion to read and to pray several of the best known and most often used Acathistos-hymns in a modern language. Upon the request of His Eminence Simon, Archbishop of Brussels and Belgium and of The Hague and the Netherlands, only hymns originating from before the October revolution and which therefore are better known and enjoy greater venerability have been selected for this book. Some of these hymns have a strong poetical expression, and most of all, a deep theological insight. Other hymns are the joyful cries of exultation of a believing soul singing her gratefulness to the Mother of God for the received blessings. By praying the Acathistos-hymns a Christian learns not only to resort to her, but also to trust in her Divine help. He doesn't go round in circles moaning about his problems, but instead elevates his soul in a song of joy for Christ's great work of Salvation, when He was incarnated in the virginal womb of Mary. Seven hymns have been translated and offered to the praying believer: Akathistos-hymn to the icon of the Theotokos 'She who mollifies the wicked hearts'; Akathistos-hymn to the icon of the Theotokos 'The Increase of Intelligence'; Akathistos-hymn to the icon of the Theotokos 'The protective Veil'; Akathistos-hymn to the icon of the Theotokos 'Smolenskaya' or 'Hodigitria' (She who shows the way); Akathistos-hymn to the icon of the Theotokos 'Unfading Blossom'; Akathistos-hymn to the icon of the Theotokos 'The Unconsumed burning Bush'; Akathistos-hymn to the icon of the Theotokos 'The Joy of All Who sorrow'. May the Most Holy Mother of God hear the cries of distress of those who call upon her and help us to find the Way to the Kingdom and to follow it until we come to Her to glorify her Eternal Son.

Book The Cult of the Mother of God in Byzantium

Download or read book The Cult of the Mother of God in Byzantium written by Leslie Brubaker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, on the cult of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) in Byzantium, focuses on textual and historical aspects of the subject, thus complementing previous work which has centred more on the cult of images of the Mother of God. The papers presented here, by an international team of scholars, consider the development and transformation of the cult from approximately the fourth through the twelfth centuries. The volume opens with discussion of the origins of the cult, and its Near Eastern manifestations, including the archaeological site of the Kathisma church in Palestine, which represents the earliest Marian shrine in the Holy Land, and Syriac poetic treatment of the Virgin. The principal focus, however, is on the 8th and 9th centuries in Byzantium, as a critical period when Christian attitudes toward the Virgin and her veneration were transformed. The book re-examines the relationship between icons, relics and the Virgin, asking whether increasing devotion to these holy objects or figures was related in any way. Some contributions consider the location of relics and later, icons, in Constantinople and other centres of Marian devotion; others explore gender issues, such as the significance of the Virgin's feminine qualities, and whether women and men identified with her equally as a holy figure. The aim of this volume is to build on recent work on the cult of the Virgin Mary in Byzantium and to explore areas that have not yet been studied. The rationale is critical and historical, using literary, artistic, and archaeological sources to evaluate her role in the development of the Byzantine understanding of the ways in which God interacts with creation by means of icons, relics, and the Theotokos.
