Book Precambrian Sedimentary Environments

Download or read book Precambrian Sedimentary Environments written by Wladyslaw Altermann and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-05 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivation for this volume came from the idea that thePrecambrian is the key, both to the present, and to theunderstanding of the Earth as a whole. The Precambrian constitutesabout 85% of Earth's history, and of that, about 3.75 billion yearsof Precambrian time, represented by rocks, are accessible togeoscientists. Ancient atmospheric and environmental conditions canbe traced back to the time when the Earth was only about 250million years old. Precambrian rocks supply almost 75% of importantmineral resources such as Fe, Mn, Au, Pt and Cr. Many of theseelements are associated with sedimentary rocks and some importanthydrocarbon, coal and graphite deposits are also hosted byPrecambrian rocks. This volume is aimed at geoscientists interested in Precambriansedimentary rocks and at students of Earth history. It containsreview articles discussing Precambrian conditions and case studiesfrom Precambrian shields and successions of North and SouthAmerica, Australia, Africa, Europe, Asia and India. Theintroductory papers, written by experts on Precambrianenvironments, treat comprehensively the application of actualism tothe Precambrian, the evolution and influence of life on thesedimentary rock record, the genesis of Banded Iron Formations, thePrecambrian sulphur cycle and the significance of Precambrianchemical carbonate precipitates. The case studies includedepositional settings and processes in Archean terranes, inPaleoproterozoic sequences, with some emphasis on the lack ofvegetation and weathering, and in late Proterozoic sequences, withsome emphasis on glacial deposits. The contributions demonstratethat Precambrian sedimentary deposits are commonly similar to theirPhanerozoic counterparts in terms of composition, sedimentaryprocesses, and depositional setting, but may differ significantlyas a result of lack of vegetation, climatic and biologicalconstraints, composition and circulation of seawater, and thesecular involvement of continental crust. Contains review articles discussing Precambrian conditions andcase studies from Precambrian shields and successions of North andSouth America, Australia, Africa, Europe, Asia and India. Book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2004 C2

Download or read book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2004 C2 written by Ross L. Sherlock and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 2004 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports the results of a mapping program in the vicinity of the Boston gold deposit near Hope Bay, south-west Nunavut. It first reviews the regional geology, the granitoid rocks of the Hope Bay volcanic belt, and their contact relationships with the belt. It then focusses on the geology of the deposit area, with descriptions of the rock types, the geologic structures, and the gold mineralization. Finally, implications of the findings for mineralization in other areas of the Hope Bay belt are discussed.

Book Precambrian Ophiolites and Related Rocks

Download or read book Precambrian Ophiolites and Related Rocks written by T.M. Kusky and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-10-26 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments have shown that many full and partial ophiolites are preserved in Precambrian cratons. This book provides a comprehensive description and discussion of the field aspects, geochemistry, geochronology and structure of the best of these ophiolites. It also presents syntheses of the characteristics of ophiolites of different ages, and an analysis of what the characteristics of these ophiolites mean for the thermal and chemical evolution of the earth. This title emphasizes new studies of Precambrian Geology that have documented ophiolites, ophiolitic fragments, and ophiolitic melanges in many Precambrian terranes. Each chapter focuses on individual Precambrian ophiolites or regions with numerous Precambrian ophiolites, and covers field aspects, petrology, geochemistry, geochronology, and other descriptive aspects of these ophiolites, it also delves into more theoretical and speculative aspects about the interpretation of the significance of these ancient ophiolites.

Book Surficial Geology Spectral reflectance Characteristics and Their Influence on Hyperspectral Imaging as a Drift prospecting Technique for Kimberlite in the Diavik Diamond Mine Area Northwest Territories

Download or read book Surficial Geology Spectral reflectance Characteristics and Their Influence on Hyperspectral Imaging as a Drift prospecting Technique for Kimberlite in the Diavik Diamond Mine Area Northwest Territories written by Daniel E. Kerr and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 2002 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both airborne & ground hyperspectral surveys have recently been undertaken as potential exploration methods for a variety of mineral deposit types in glaciated regions. This paper reviews a project that aims to summarize the surficial geology & glacial stratigraphy in the Lac de Gras kimberlite field in order to assess hyperspectral ground surveys as a drift prospecting technique for kimberlite in an area with varied overburden thickness. It describes the area's regional geology & glacial history, the reasons for lack of kimberlite indicator minerals above some kimberlite pipes, and the spectral reflectance response of bedrock exposures, kimberlite, and various till samples collected in the area. Limitations of using spectral reflectance data in drift prospecting are also discussed.

Book Volcanic Relationships and Gold Mineralization in the Wolverine Madrid Corridor Hope Bay Volcanic Belt Nunavut

Download or read book Volcanic Relationships and Gold Mineralization in the Wolverine Madrid Corridor Hope Bay Volcanic Belt Nunavut written by Ross L. Sherlock and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 2002 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports the results of a detailed mapping program over an area of the Hope Bay volcanic belt, western Nunavut, carried out in conjunction with a detailed core-logging & alteration study of the Naartok gold deposit. The paper includes information on the regional geology, the geology of the belt, the history of mineral exploration in the area, and the lithology & stratigraphy of the area's volcanic & intrusive rocks. The final sections review structural geology, the observed structural & stratigraphic relations, the alteration of volcanic rocks, and the characteristics of gold mineralization in the Madrid area (location of the Naartok deposit) & Wolverine Lake area of the belt.

Book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2000 C2

Download or read book Geological Survey of Canada Current Research Online no 2000 C2 written by Wouter Bleeker and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 2000 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Slave Province is a relatively small but well-exposed Archean craton in the north-west part of the Canadian Shield. Mapping of quartzite & banded iron formation occurrences throughout the Province since the 1970s has resulted in the conclusion that the overall topology of all greenstone belts in the central & western parts of the Province permits all such occurrences to be correlated into a single cover sequence, the Central Slave Cover Group. Following a brief historical overview, this paper presents field evidence for the discovery & successful correlation of that cover sequence across much of the craton. It then presents detrital zircon data to bolster this correlation, in particular to show that what was earlier mapped as a Paleoproterozoic cover sequence in central Wopmay Orogen is in fact part of the Central Slave Cover Group. The extension of the Cover Group into the north-western Slave Province have implications for the architecture & evolution of continental crust older than 2.85 billion years.
