Book Encyclopedia of New Year s Holidays Worldwide

Download or read book Encyclopedia of New Year s Holidays Worldwide written by William D. Crump and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-03-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the world's myriad cultures and their associated calendars, the idea of a "New Year" is relative and hardly specifies a universal celebration or even a universal point in time. Ways of celebrating the New Year range from the observances of religious rituals and superstitions to social gatherings featuring particular foods, music, dancing, noisemaking, fireworks and drinking. This first encyclopedia devoted exclusively to the New Year includes 320 entries that give a global perspective on the New Year, beyond its traditional Western associations with Christmas. National or regional entries detail the principal traditions and customs of 130 countries, while 27 entries discuss major calendar systems in current use or of significant historical interest. The remaining entries cover a wide variety of subjects including literary works, movies, and television specials; the customs of specific ethnic groups; universal customs such as toasting and drinking; football bowl games and parades; and the New Year celebrations at the White House and the Vatican.

Book Judaism s Story of Creation

Download or read book Judaism s Story of Creation written by Jacob Neusner and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the formative age of Judaism, the first seven centuries CE, the great rabbis thought deeply about beginnings in light of endings. They imposed upon their sequential reading of each passage the accumulated results of their reflection about all passages. Thus, they encompassed Scripture, so as to describe the world as God had intended it to be. This act of intellect resulted in two distinct, ahistorical media of thought and expression, the Halakhah, law, and Aggadah, lore. The author provides three systematic accounts of the Halakhic reading, and two Aggadic accounts. The Halakhic accounts cover [1] Work and Rest, [2] Ownership and Possession, Eden and the Land, and [3] Ownership and Possession in the Household. The Aggadic accounts pertain to [1] the Six Days of Creation, and [2] Adam and Eve.

Book The Game on New Year s Day

Download or read book The Game on New Year s Day written by Ted Brack and published by Black & White Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hibs and Hearts first locked horns on Christmas Day 1875. Hearts won 1-0 and even the most ardent Hibs fan would have to admit that the Tynecastle team has had the better of things in contests for local bragging rights over the 135 years which have followed. However, Hibs have had their moments too and the 6-2 derby win at Easter Road inspired by Franck Sauzee and Russell Latapy in October 2000 is a recent example of green and white triumph. No Hibs win over their local rivals, though, has come close to the epic 7-0 victory which was recorded by the great Turnbull's Tornadoes team on the first day of 1973. On the day that the United Kingdom entered the European Economic Community, Hibs carved out their own slice of history by vanquishing Hearts by seven clear goals on their own turf at Tynecastle. As the 40th anniversary of this iconic encounter approaches, Ted Brack describes the great match and the events which preceded it and tells the story of what has happened to the players who took part in it in the decades which have followed.Ted's book is written from his own experience and draws heavily on the first-hand memories and reminiscences of other supporters and the outstanding players who wore the green and white of Hibernian on that seminal day. Ted has spoken at length to players like ice cool goalkeeper Jim Herriot, world class full back John Brownlie, rock solid centre half Jim Black, classy and composed sweeper John Blackley, midfield maestros Alex Edwards and Alex Cropley, goal scorer supreme Jimmy O'Rourke and the peerless captain Pat Stanton. The players' honesty and insight make this book the definitive account of a match which still boasts the record competitive winning margin between Edinburgh's Big Two - Hearts supporters please note. "The Game on New Year's Day" is a must read for Hibees and should bring some cheer after their recent Cup disappointments.

Book The 5th Season New year ku books 1 2 of 4

Download or read book The 5th Season New year ku books 1 2 of 4 written by Robin D. Gill and published by Paraverse Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the first of a series, Robin D. Gill, author of the highly acclaimed Rise, Ye Sea Slugs! and Cherry Blossom Epiphany, the largest single-theme anthologies of poetry ever published, explores the traditional Japanese New Year through 2,000 translated haiku (mostly 17-20c). "The New Year," R.H. Blyth once wrote, "is a season by itself." That was nowhere so plain as in the world of haiku, where saijiki, large collections called of ku illustrating hundreds, if not thousands of briefly explained seasonal themes, generally comprised five volumes, one for each season. Yet, the great doyen of haiku gave this fifth season, considered the first season when it came at the head of the Spring rather than in mid-winter, only a tenth of the pages he gave to each of the other four seasons (20 vs. 200). Was Blyth, Zen enthusiast, not enamored with ritual? Or, was he loath to translate the New Year with its many cultural idiosyncrasies (most common to the Sinosphere but not to the West), because he did not want to have to explain the haiku? It is hard to say, but, with these poems for the re-creation of the world, Robin D. Gill, aka "keigu" (respect foolishness, or respect-fool), rushes in where even Blyth feared to tread to give this supernatural or cosmological season - one that combines aspects of the Solstice, Christmas, New Year's, Easter, July 4th and the Once Upon a Time of Fairy Tales - the attention it deserves. With G.K. Chesterton's words, evoking the mind of the haiku poets of old, the author-publisher leaves further description of the content to his reader-reviewers. "The man standing in his own kitchen-garden with the fairyland opening at the gate, is the man with large ideas. His mind creates distance; the motor-car stupidly destroys it." (G.K. Chesterton: Heretics 1905)
