Book The Life and Illustrious Martyrdom of Sir Thomas More

Download or read book The Life and Illustrious Martyrdom of Sir Thomas More written by Thomas Stapleton and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 1967 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1588, the year of the Spanish Armada, Thomas Stapleton sat down to write the book Tres Thomae; his subject was the life and works of St. Thomas the Apostle, St. Thomas of Canterbury, and Sir Thomas More. He wrote it in Latin (as More had done with his Utopia) since a knowledge of English was a rare accomplishment among European scholars and readers. Apart from its entertainment value as an account of More's life, the book is also a document of great importance; his list of sources is impressive since it includes many of the exiled members of More's circle from whom he gathered the information treasured in their memories. Most valuable of all was the collection of letters preserved by John Harris, More's secretary; from these, Stapleton gives us more than thirty letters or extracts from letters not to be found elsewhere. Apart from such documentary evidence, the book also gives us the recollections of those who were intimate members of More's household; it records the reputation Thomas More had gained within a half century of his death and it emphasizes the remarkable place that he had achieved in the popular mind even before any written account of his life was available. The fascination of the life of a man who preferred to obey the law of God rather than the command of a king has not diminished with the passage of time. That such a life should be the subject of awards for its portrayal on stage and screen is not only a testimony to the incomparable artistry of an actor and a playwright; it is, as well, an acknowledgement of (in the words with which Stapleton brings his book to a close), the admiration of modern man for the life, the character, the achievements, and the glorious martyrdom of that noble and illustrious man, Sir Thomas More.

Book excerpt: A Man for All Seasons dramatises the conflict between King Henry VIII and Sir Thomas More. It depicts the confrontation between church and state, theology and politics, absolute power and individual freedom. Throughout the play Sir Thomas More's eloquence and endurance, his purity, saintliness and tenacity in the face of ever-growing threats to his beliefs and family, earn him status as one of modern drama's greatest tragic heroes. The play was first staged in 1960 at the Globe Theatre in London and was voted New York's Best Foreign Play in 1962. In 1966 it was made into an Academy Award-winning film by Fred Zinneman starring Paul Scofield."A Man for All Seasons is a stark play, sparse in its narrative, sinewy in its writing, which confirms Mr Bolt as a genuine and solid playwright, a force in our awakening theatre." • Pages : 544 pages

Download or read book Sir Thomas More written by William Shakespeare and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of Sir Thomas More is the first to bring the play into the context of a major Shakespeare series, to provide a substantial critical analysis, and to offer a comprehensive modern stage history. The introduction deals with issues such as the strange involvement of the anti-Catholic spy-hunter Anthony Munday as chief dramatist, the place of Sir Thomas More as a Catholic martyr in Protestant late Elizabethan culture, and the play's representation of a multi-cultural London. The text itself, supported by a searching and detailed commentary, adopts a distinctive presentation that enables readers to keep track of the manuscript and the hands that produced it, whilst engaging with the play as a fascinating theatrical piece. Sir Thomas More deals with matters so controversial that it may never have reached performance on stage. The authors' determination to deal with rioting and religious politics led to a play that is compelling in its own right but also intriguing as a document of what could, and could not, be articulated in the early modern public theatre. Surviving only as a manuscript text on which Shakespeare was thought to have worked, it can be considered to be the most important play manuscript of the period, owing to its highly complex witness to collaboration between dramatists and to censorship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...[A] calm exposition of [Southey's] mature social and political convictions: rejection of the Catholic claims and of constitutional reform, support for high taxation to redistribute wealth, and so on. The conversations are conducted with the ghost of Sir Thomas More, whose Utopia was a remote ancestor of pantisocracy. They are set in the neighbourhood of Keswick, and the beauty of the countryside tempers the generally gloomy tone of the conversation, as does the quiet of his splendid library." -- DNB.
