Download or read book History of Economic Relations between Russia and China written by M.I. Sladkovskii and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally written as a historical treatise to demonstrate -that the development of economic ties between Russia and China is the logical outcome of a centuries old friendship between these neighboring peoples, a friendship which accords with their fundamental interests and is of general benefit to all mankind.- In the post-Soviet and post-Maoist era, these consensual tendencies are even stronger. The original publication of this translation in 1966, when its central thesis had long been abandoned and refuted by both sides, is still of value and not just as an ironic comment on the theorists and systemizers of history. For this, better examples are already available in every book shop and on the shelves of every library. Rather, the work demonstrates that sharing a common socialist ideology is insufficient to overcome animosities of history and national rivalries. The student of Sino-Soviet relations will find much of interest here. The book still represents a work of considerable scholarship, even though its ostensible raison d'I1/2tre has been abolished. Armed with the knowledge that the protagonists have accepted some of the author's reservations and have reversed their positions on a number of points objectionable to him, the reader will be able to achieve a clear and comprehensive understanding of the subject. Partisanship was never particularly subtle in debates within Marxist or Maoist circles. The virulence of the language in some sections of the book, which have been rendered accurately, with no toning down, provides the reader with an insight into the background of China's continuing intransigence in international policies.

Download or read book India China Boundary Problem 1846 1947 written by A.G. Noorani and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-13 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary issues have always occupied a central focus in the relations between India and China. Highlighting the role of history, policy, and diplomacy, this book traces the origins and development of the India–China boundary problem during the British Raj. A.G. Noorani shows how British efforts to secure a defined boundary in the western sector began immediately after the creation of Jammu & Kashmir in 1846. However, in the eastern sector, such an exercise began only sixty-five years later, when a Chinese threat was perceived. Examining the role of the bureaucracy and diplomatic negotiations, the author presents a nuanced analysis of the treaties and conventions, as well as internal debates between British officials on conflicting policies. Breaking new ground, this book evaluates the relevance of the Indian Independence Act, 1947, and explains how the diplomatic history in the last hundred years shaped the boundary problem between India and China. What was a problem aggravated into a dispute that erupted in 1959. The central thesis is that history had direct relevance to the shaping of a sound policy. Based on archival research and unpublished material, this volume uses twenty-two appendices and fourteen maps to present a unique perspective on a long- standing problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Ford’s reading of Confucius is both shrewd and instructive, with implications for contemporary policymakers . . . a scholarly analysis of Chinese history.” —The Weekly Standard China’s prosperity has increased dramatically in the last two decades, propelling the nation to a prominent position in the international community. Yet China’s ancient history still informs and shapes its understanding of itself in relation to the world. As a highly developed and modern nation, China is something of a paradox. In The Mind of Empire: China’s History and Modern Foreign Relations, Christopher A. Ford demonstrates how China’s historical awareness shapes its objectives and how the resulting national consciousness continues to influence the country’s policymaking. Despite its increasing prominence among modern, developed nations, China continues to seek guidance from a past characterized by Confucian notions of hierarchical political order and a “moral geography” that places China at the center of the civilized world. The Mind of Empire describes how these attitudes have clashed with traditional Western ideals of sovereignty and international law. Ford speculates about how China’s legacy may continue to shape its foreign relations and offers a warning about the potential global consequences. He examines major themes in China’s conception of domestic and global political order, describes key historical precedents, and outlines the remarkable continuity of China’s Sinocentric stance. Expertly synthesizing historical, philosophical, religious, and cultural analysis into a cohesive study of the Chinese worldview, Ford offers revealing insights into modern China. “A much-needed and an erudite contextualization . . . [this book] will benefit immensely those interested in the history and strategic culture of China’s foreign policy.” —The China Quarterly
