Book The Sacred and the Sinister

Download or read book The Sacred and the Sinister written by David J. Collins, S. J. and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2019-05-17 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the work of eminent scholar Richard Kieckhefer, The Sacred and the Sinister explores the ambiguities that made (and make) medieval religion and magic so difficult to differentiate. The essays in this collection investigate how the holy and unholy were distinguished in medieval Europe, where their characteristics diverged, and the implications of that deviation. In the Middle Ages, the natural world was understood as divinely created and infused with mysterious power. This world was accessible to human knowledge and susceptible to human manipulation through three modes of engagement: religion, magic, and science. How these ways of understanding developed in light of modern notions of rationality is an important element of ongoing scholarly conversation. As Kieckhefer has emphasized, ambiguity and ambivalence characterize medieval understandings of the divine and demonic powers at work in the world. The ten chapters in this volume focus on four main aspects of this assertion: the cult of the saints, contested devotional relationships and practices, unsettled judgments between magic and religion, and inconclusive distinctions between magic and science. Freshly insightful, this study of ambiguity between magic and religion will be of special interest to scholars in the fields of medieval studies, religious studies, European history, and the history of science. In addition to the editor, the contributors to this volume are Michael D. Bailey, Kristi Woodward Bain, Maeve B. Callan, Elizabeth Casteen, Claire Fanger, Sean L. Field, Anne M. Koenig, Katelyn Mesler, and Sophie Page.

Book The Adventure of the Sinister Stranger

Download or read book The Adventure of the Sinister Stranger written by Agatha Christie and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Adventure of the Sinister Stranger,” the second in a series of 12 mystery stories featuring Tommy & Tuppence, was originally published in the The Sketch on October 22, 1924. These tales were billed “Tommy and Tuppence—A Detective Series by Agatha Christie” and would later be collected as Partners in Crime. “The Adventure of the Sinister Stranger,” would become the sixth story in the collection. The conceit of the series is simple: The Beresfords’ friend Mr Carter, who works for a government intelligence agency, arrives bearing a proposition for the adventurous duo. They are to take over The International Detective Agency, a recently cleaned-out spy stronghold, and pose as the owners so as to intercept any enemy messages coming through. In the meantime Tommy and Tuppence can take on cases as this detective agency, an opportunity that delights the young couple. They employ Albert, a young man introduced in The Secret Adversary, as their assistant at the agency. The two tackle a series of cases, each mimicking the style of a famous fictional detective of the period, including Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Thorndyke, G.K. Chesterton, A.E.W. Mason, and even Christie’s own Hercule Poirot (among others). “The Adventure of the Sinister Stranger” is an espionage story, following in the footsteps of Valentine Williams and the detective brothers Francis and Desmond Okewood. One of Williams’ books in particular—The Man with the Clubfoot (1918)—is mentioned by Tuppence in the story.

Book The Legend of The Sinister Swamp

Download or read book The Legend of The Sinister Swamp written by Drac Von Stoller and published by Drac Von Stoller. This book was released on 2024-07-20 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Legend of the Sinister Swamp was a place of mystery and dread, its murky waters hiding countless secrets and terrors. The Jackson family, consisting of the mother Hilda and her two sons Robert and Bobby, lived in an old, rundown cabin near the edge of the swamp. They were a family of outcasts, with no formal education or morals, and they were shunned by the rest of the town. The Jacksons were rumored to be involved in all sorts of dark and twisted activities, but no one dared to confront them. Anyone who traveled near the swamp was met with a terrible fate, disappearing without a trace. The dilapidated cabin stood as a testament to the Jacksons' isolation, its weathered wood groaning under the weight of years of neglect. Moss-covered shingles hung precariously from the roof, threatening to fall at any moment. The windows, clouded with grime and cobwebs, seemed to watch passersby with a malevolent gaze. Inside, Hilda Jackson sat in a creaky rocking chair, her gnarled fingers methodically sharpening a rusted knife. The flickering light from a lone oil lamp cast eerie shadows across her wrinkled face, accentuating the malice in her eyes. "Boys," she called out, her voice raspy and cold. "It's almost time for the hunt." Robert and Bobby emerged from the darkened corners of the cabin, their eyes gleaming with anticipation. Robert, the elder of the two, stood tall and lanky, his greasy hair hanging in matted clumps around his face. Bobby, shorter and stockier, had a permanent sneer etched onto his features. "Yes, Ma," they replied in unison, their voices devoid of emotion. Hilda's thin lips curled into a sinister smile. "I can smell 'em coming. Fresh meat, ripe for the picking." The brothers exchanged excited glances, their fingers twitching with barely contained eagerness. As night fell, a group of five teenagers approached the outskirts of the swamp. They had driven from the nearby town, their curiosity outweighing their fear of the local legends.
