Book The Sinews of the Spirit

Download or read book The Sinews of the Spirit written by Norman Vance and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985-08-22 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fresh perspective on nineteenth-century life by examining the nature and context of 'Christian manliness' or 'muscular Christianity', an ideal of conduct that was widely popular with Victorian preachers and writers. It pays particular attention to Charles Kingsley (author of The Water-Babies) and Thomas Hughes (author of Tom Brown's Schooldays). Dr Vance traces the origins of Christian manliness in the traditions of English sporting prowess, in notions of chivalry and gentlemanliness, and in the preaching of vigourous virtue from St Paul to Victorian evangelists. He also considers the social and religious thought of Coleridge, Carlyle, F. D. Maurice and Thomas Arnold, showing how Kingsley and Hughes developed their own ideals of Christian manliness against this background, and in keen response to the troubles of their time: social unrest, religious rancour, war and disease. A final chapter traces the fragmentation and debasement of the ideal in the twentieth century.

Book In Search of the Spirit Selected Works Volume One

Download or read book In Search of the Spirit Selected Works Volume One written by John R. Levison and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his trailblazing studies of the spirit in Jewish and Christian Antiquity, John R. (Jack) Levison shatters theological and exegetical taxonomies. Should the spirit be understood as breath or Spirit--or both? Is the spirit directed to creation or salvation--or both? Is the spirit a force or an angel--or both? Does the spirit inspire ecstasy or wisdom--or both? When Levison transfers the starting point of pneumatology from the New Testament to the Hebrew Bible, from Christianity to Judaism, questions swell, assumptions detonate, and expectations flourish. Consequently, Levison's studies are considered "impressive and provocative" (Review of Biblical Literature), "delightful, engaging" (Catholic Biblical Quarterly), "compelling, eloquent, sensitive" (Word and World), and "a remarkable read" (Themelios), with "profound ramifications for both Jewish and New Testament Studies" (Journal of Jewish Studies). Now, for the first time, selections of his breathtaking array of studies are available in three accessible volumes. This volume, in which you will discover some of the programmatic studies Levison published on the biblical literature of both testaments, reveals why Reading Religion: A Publication of the American Academy of Religion forecasts that "Levison will continue to be at the center of our most fruitful discussions of pneumatology."

Book The Holy Spirit Within

  • Author : St. John of Avila
  • Publisher : Scepter Publishers
  • Release : 2017-03-31
  • ISBN : 1594171866
  • Pages : 137 pages

Download or read book The Holy Spirit Within written by St. John of Avila and published by Scepter Publishers. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St John of Avila, proclaimed a doctor of the Church in October 2012, offers illuminating insights on the Holy Spirit in the collection of homilies first published by Scepter in 1959. Presented as sermons given around the feasts of Ascension and Pentecost, the saint speaks directly and to the point, yet is thoughtful and affectionate in his style. He proceeds in the form of a dialogue to present the Great Unknown. The sermons begin with a short introduction and then come to a particular point supported by Scripture texts, quotations from the Fathers, well-chosen illustrations, and his own original insights. Many believers may find these feasts somewhat puzzling and obscure. St. John shows how they are among the greatest feasts in the Christian calendar and deserve to be better understood.

Book The Bone and Sinew of the Land

Download or read book The Bone and Sinew of the Land written by Anna-Lisa Cox and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-hidden stories of America's black pioneers, the frontier they settled, and their fight for the heart of the nation When black settlers Keziah and Charles Grier started clearing their frontier land in 1818, they couldn't know that they were part of the nation's earliest struggle for equality; they were just looking to build a better life. But within a few years, the Griers would become early Underground Railroad conductors, joining with fellow pioneers and other allies to confront the growing tyranny of bondage and injustice. The Bone and Sinew of the Land tells the Griers' story and the stories of many others like them: the lost history of the nation's first Great Migration. In building hundreds of settlements on the frontier, these black pioneers were making a stand for equality and freedom. Their new home, the Northwest Territory--the wild region that would become present-day Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin--was the first territory to ban slavery and have equal voting rights for all men. Though forgotten today, in their own time the successes of these pioneers made them the targets of racist backlash. Political and even armed battles soon ensued, tearing apart families and communities long before the Civil War. This groundbreaking work of research reveals America's forgotten frontier, where these settlers were inspired by the belief that all men are created equal and a brighter future was possible. Named one of Smithsonian's Best History Books of 2018

Book excerpt: Noticing an abnormal weakness in his body, author Harvey J. Morgan decided to seek medical attention. After blood work, the initial diagnosis confirmed his worst fear: a form of leukemia. He was an active pastor, father, and grandfather, raised dairy calves, and was known as a man of faith. While preparing to visit specialist doctors at a university hospital, Morgan felt impressed to cling to Ezekiel 16:6. After conferring with the medical team and given his sixty-four-year-old age and available treatment options, the future seemed unclear: five percent recovery rate with minimum life expectancy. Holding onto faith and leaning on the support of family and friends, he was unable to complete the prescribed treatment, but God performed the improbable. God Said, “Live!” details Morgan’s faith-filled battle through the dark days and nights of treatment and recovery. Seven years later, he continues to encourage others to trust God and hold onto His word. He relays his epic story of faith versus fear, hoping to inspire others to seek to overcome and live.
