Book China and the End of Global Silver 1873 1937

Download or read book China and the End of Global Silver 1873 1937 written by Austin Dean and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, as much of the world adopted some variant of the gold standard, China remained the most populous country still using silver. Yet China had no unified national currency; there was not one monetary standard but many. Silver coins circulated alongside chunks of silver and every transaction became an "encounter of wits." China and the End of Global Silver, 1873–1937 focuses on how officials, policy makers, bankers, merchants, academics, and journalists in China and around the world answered a simple question: how should China change its monetary system? Far from a narrow, technical issue, Chinese monetary reform is a dramatic story full of political revolutions, economic depressions, chance, and contingency. As different governments in China attempted to create a unified monetary standard in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the United States, England, and Japan tried to shape the direction of Chinese monetary reform for their own benefit. Austin Dean argues convincingly that the Silver Era in world history ended owing to the interaction of imperial competition in East Asia and the state-building projects of different governments in China. When the Nationalist government of China went off the silver standard in 1935, it marked a key moment not just in Chinese history but in world history.

Book The Story of Silver

Download or read book The Story of Silver written by William L. Silber and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the story of silver's transformation from soft money during the nineteenth century to hard asset today, and how manipulations of the white metal by American president Franklin D. Roosevelt during the 1930s and by the richest man in the world, Texas oil baron Nelson Bunker Hunt, during the 1970s altered the course of American and world history. FDR pumped up the price of silver to help jump start the U.S. economy during the Great Depression, but this move weakened China, which was then on the silver standard, and facilitated Japan's rise to power before World War II. Bunker Hunt went on a silver-buying spree during the 1970s to protect himself against inflation and triggered a financial crisis that left him bankrupt. Silver has been the preferred shelter against government defaults, political instability, and inflation for most people in the world because it is cheaper than gold. The white metal has been the place to hide when conventional investments sour, but it has also seduced sophisticated investors throughout the ages like a siren. This book explains how powerful figures, up to and including Warren Buffett, have come under silver's thrall, and how its history guides economic and political decisions in the twenty-first century"--Publisher's description

Book Where in the World Did All Those Silver Coins Come From

Download or read book Where in the World Did All Those Silver Coins Come From written by David M. Fouts and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-07-31 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using this reference tool will facilitate the study of World Silver Coins for the beginning collector to the veteran Numismatist, always with a view to making a bit of extra money in the process. This book is not intended to replace the standard reference tools currently on the market. Those mammoth tomes are very thorough, and have their place. The value in this book is having a thorough work vetting World Silver Coins from approximately 1870 to 1970, in a size that can easily be carried by hand or in a briefcase to a club meeting, to a coin show, or to an appraisal, or simply at home with Grandfather's hoard. The reader will often be alerted to the designs, denominations, and dates of the rarest coins to retain for further study (and profit!). Conversely, those coins which do not have numismatic significance still have value in today's market as silver bullion, and this book provides the tools for the method of determining just how much one can expect to receive when remitting the coins to reputable dealers.

Book The Late Roman Gold and Silver Coins from the Hoxne Treasure

Download or read book The Late Roman Gold and Silver Coins from the Hoxne Treasure written by Peter S. W. Guest and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovered in 1992, the Hoxne Treasure is perhaps the richest cache of gold and silver coins, jewellery and tableware from the entire Roman world. The core of this volume is the catalogue of the 15,000 late 4th- and early 5th-century gold and silver coins, together with an in-depth discussion of the production and supply of late Roman coinage. Hoxne's silver coins are particularly interesting, and the book also contains ground-breaking discussions of the silver content of Roman currency as well as of the peculiarly British phenomena of coin clipping and copying. The value of the Hoxne Treasure in shedding light on an otherwise dark period of British history also calls for a broader, non-numismatic perspective, and the volume includes an important chapter dealing with the social significance of precious metals in the later Roman empire, particularly their role in the gift-exchange networks that defined and maintained late Roman imperial society.

Book Encyclopedia Small Silver Coins

Download or read book Encyclopedia Small Silver Coins written by Roger Dewardt Lane and published by Roger deWardt Lane. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Softcover book - The latest incarnation of Brother Can You Spare A Dime? - Modern Dime Size Silver Coins of the World with Footnotes to History has been published in a Third Edition. This work, a many year project to study these coins as miniature engravings of Art and History, was first published in 1997. Several years later a CD-rom was produced as the Second Edition. The author won a Numismatic Literary Guild Award for this Edition. The Third Edition, a 600 page book with over a thousand enlarged scans of the coins from the mid 1800's to 1970 show coins from around the world - Afghanistan to Yemen. These coins were the money of the people at the time; one would represent a days work, purchase a meal or a night's entertainment. Kings, Queens and Statesmen are portrayed on dozens, with little biographies of many. More than a numismatic book, this anthology is a fine way to develop a better understanding of money in use during the previous two centuries. A great addition to your numismatic library.

A remarkable example of this little used process and of major importance in the history of photography and photomechanical printing in the United States. Joseph Saxton not only produced the oldest extant daguerreotype now in the United States, but also invented the modification to the ruling machine used for this publication."--Hanson Collection catalog, p. 8.
