Book excerpt: They all came to Leadville with the same purpose: Get in. Get rich. Get out. As 1879 draws to a close, this Rocky Mountain boomtown has infected the world with silver fever. It's not much different than the dot.com mania or the corporate scams that heat up over a century later. Unfortunately for Joe Rose, a precious-metals assayer, death stakes its own claim. Joe's body is found trampled into the muck behind Inez Stannert's saloon. Inez already had much more to deal with than pouring shots of Taos Lightning and cleaning up a corpse. A lady educated on the East Coast, she has a past that doesn't bear close scrutiny, including her elopement with a gambling man who has recently disappeared. Most townsfolk, including Inez's business partner, Abe Jackson, dismiss Joe's death as an accident. Death, after all, is no stranger in Leadville. But Inez wonders: Why was this loving husband and father carrying a brass token good for "one free screw" at the parlor house of Denver madam Mattie Silks? When Joe's widow Emma asks Inez to settle Joe's affairs, almost against her will, Inez uncovers skewed assays, bogus greenbacks, and blackmail. Lies and secrets run deep in Colorado, secretsmore likely to lead to a hanging than to today's congressional hearings or country-club prisons for the crooked and the greedy. Then again, maybe Joe's murder was purely personal.... Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What the young detectives need to do now is discover what is causing the dreadful screams coming from the mysterious house on Michigatta Ridge. Since the property and the mansion are being purchased by a family in nearby Shelton, permission to search the house shouldn't be too difficult to obtain, for the real estate agent is Mr. Allen, Alan Allen's father. Now the young detectives can finally gain access to the old mansion and solve all the mysteries, right? Well, maybe not. While exploring about the old place, Laura and Julie Ann, two new characters, run into a few unexpected problems. First, Laura disappears through a secret panel near the old grandfather clock located at the foot of the stairs, falling to the cellar floor, rendering her unconscious. There's a cellar? Up to then, no one knew a cellar existed. However, this one is quite unique in that it holds secrets, one being a human skeleton which Laura, not knowing what she'd stumbled onto, disassembles while groping about in the dark understory into which she had fallen. Another odd find, hiding in the darkness of the previously unknown basement, is a Wells Fargo stagecoach. A bill of lading, sometimes called a waybill, found later shows the stagecoach once carried sixteen bags of gold, each weighing eight pounds. The missing gold could be hidden somewhere in the house or cellar. At least the group, now known as JABAL Force, an acronym standing for Julie, Alan, Barbara, and Laura, thinks it should be so. Even stranger than a skeleton and a stagecoach being in the cellar is the apparition Barbara later discovers that becomes known as the Dancing Miner. Most of these mysteries become somewhat unraveled in the end, but the source of the terrifying screams continues to haunt the group.

My Cozie Corner Book Reviews Sadie doesn't know she's special--or that she could die at any moment. Only one green-eyed boy knows the truth, and he would do anything to keep her safe, even if it means betraying everything he holds dear. SADIE: I’ve dreamt of the mysterious faceless boy with shimmering eyes since I was little. But that’s all he ever was… a dream. Then I almost died. When I woke up, there he was. Rayne is definitely real… and gorgeous. I feel like I’ve known him forever, but I have no idea why. Who is he? All he will tell me is that he’s a Water Keeper, tasked with using Healing Water to help the sick and hurt. But he’s been assigned to me. Only me. My own irresistible bodyguard. But, why? What is he protecting me from? I’m just a normal high school girl and that's all I want to be. RAYNE: I have a duty—to protect Sadie from a secret world she knows nothing about, or her place in it. I can’t get emotionally involved. The risk is too great. I’m not even supposed to speak to her. But then there was the accident. I thought I was going to lose her, and I can’t lose her. But I can’t have her either. I have to be strong. But, the way she looks at me… the way she makes me feel… No. I have to resist. I’ve sworn an oath I can't ever break. Deep Blue Secret (Book 1) California teen Sadie James thinks her life couldn't get any better. She has great friends, an energetic mother she adores, and the beach practically in her own backyard. But her carefree life is turned upside down when she's rescued by a mysterious and strangely familiar boy who won't even tell her his name. Each time the boy appears, Sadie's unexplainable attraction to him deepens along with her need to unravel his secrets. The boy is there to protect her, but as wonderful and exciting as it might be to have an irresistible boy with crystal green eyes protecting her every move, every minute of the day...why does Sadie need one? As Sadie finds answers, she realizes her life isn't as perfect as she thought. Not only is she caught in a world of dangerous secret agents she never knew existed, but it turns out her true identity may be the greatest secret of all. Rogue Wave (Book 2) After five months of blissful pretending, Sadie and Rayne are practically the couple of the year. At least, according to Sadie's friends at school they are. But she knows the truth. Their feelings are just an illusion. Now, with graduation and college right around the corner, Sadie realizes she can't put off the inevitable any longer. She has to make a choice. Take the easy way out and run away from her problems, as usual, or move forward with courage and discover her own destiny. But when Ash Hastings, the son of the black-eyed man who almost drove Sadie to her death last November and Rayne's supposed best friend, makes an unnerving appearance in Sadie's life again, the path to her future takes an unexpected turn. And this time, Sadie's life isn't the only one in danger. Ambrosia Shore (Book 3) Sadie never dreamed she would see the world of Ambrosia with her own two eyes, just like Rayne never believed he would have the chance to share it with her. Finally, they can be together without any lies, without hiding who they are, in a world that shines brighter than Sadie could ever imagine. There's only one problem. Rayne had to break grievous laws in order to bring her there, and he is expected to pay the price. Sadie believes her father has the power to free Rayne, but he has been missing for days. Now, Sadie is alone in an unfamiliar world and desperate to help Rayne before it's too late.

Book The Miss Silver Mysteries Volume Eight

Download or read book The Miss Silver Mysteries Volume Eight written by Patricia Wentworth and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British governess-turned-sleuth cracks the case in four puzzling mysteries from the “timelessly charming” series (Charlotte MacLeod). Retired governess and teacher Maud Silver has a new profession: private detective. And though she may seem a kindly and demure pensioner, she can solve crimes right alongside the best Scotland Yard has to offer in this charming series from “a first-rate storyteller” (The Daily Telegraph). Out of the Past: Alan Field is a charming, handsome young man with a predilection for causing trouble and breaking hearts. But when he learns that an author is writing a biography of his late father, it’s up to Alan to go through his father’s letters—where he finds a bundle of scandalous correspondence and forms a plan. It begins as blackmail and ends with a dead body. And that’s where Miss Silver comes in. The Silent Pool: Actress Adriana Ford is afraid—and with good reason. Someone is trying to kill her. So she goes to Miss Silver for help finding out who wants her dead. It could be anyone: a stalker, an obsessed fan, even her own family. Then, a body is found at Adriana’s estate, and Miss Silver travels to the countryside where she learns that Adriana may not have been telling her the whole truth—and that the truth may get her killed. Vanishing Point: Jenny Maxwell is a bright, young disabled child who writes stories of fantasy. But they are only barely fictional. Trapped in her room for hours at a time, Jenny hears all. She knows about the young woman who disappeared from town, and about the strange young man who works at the nearby military research center. What sounds like harmless gossip could actually be a grave threat to national security—one which only Miss Silver is capable of unearthing. Benevent Treasure: As a WWII orphan, Candida Sayle has never considered that she might have a family somewhere. Then she receives a letter from an unheard-of aunt, inviting Candida to rejoin the Benevent family. The young woman ventures to the country, and the environment comforts Candida—as do the attentions of her aunt’s handsome young secretary. But her vacation goes off the rails when death strikes the house, and the brilliant detective Maud Silver joins the party to investigate the possible murder. These charming traditional British mysteries featuring the unstoppable Miss Silver—whose stout figure, fondness for Tennyson, and passion for knitting disguise a keen intellect and a knack for cracking even the toughest cases—are sure to delight readers of Agatha Christie, Ellis Peters, and Dorothy L. Sayers.
