Book excerpt: It had come to this: breastfeeding her screaming three-month-old while sitting on the cigarette-scarred floor of a union hall, lying to her husband so she could attend yet another activist meeting, and otherwise actively self-destructing. Then Sonya Huber turned to her long-dead grandfather, the family nobody, for help. Huber s search for meaning and resonance in the life of her grandfather Heina Buschman was unusual insofar as she knew him only through dismissive family stories: He let his wife die of neglect . . . he used his infant son as a decoy when transporting anti-Nazi literature in a baby carriage . . . and so the stories went. What she actually discovered was that, like his granddaughter, Heina Buschman was a committed and beleaguered activist whose story echoed her own. Huber s research not only conjured her grandfather s voice in answer to many of the questions that troubled her but also found in his story a source of personal sustenance for herself. Based on extensive research and documentation, this story of Heina Buschman offers a rare look into the heart of the average socialist trying to survive the Nazis and rebuild a broken world. Alternating with his voice is Huber s own, providing a rich and moving counterpoint that makes this deeply personal exploration of family, politics, and individual responsibility a story for all of us and for all time.

Book Opa s Halloween Handful

Download or read book Opa s Halloween Handful written by Opa Don and published by BookCountry. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are looking for terrifying tales that will have you waking up screaming from nightmares; keep looking. I’m not Stephen King, I’m just a kindly old grandfather who doesn’t dabble much in the macabre. But, if you want interesting stories which are entertaining and engaging, read on. These stories are about people interacting with other people but in these stories the people also happen to be; vampires, witches, werewolves, angels, demons and a monster I invented for this collection of stories called a slurker. What do you do if you are becoming a monster? Do you embrace it like Theo and Dustin or resist it like LaRue? What do you do if you encounter a monster? Do you attack like Miss Grant or negotiate like Father O’Shea? Maybe you would call in outside help like Scoop, Zack and Timmy did. Find out how the characters in my stories handled their monsters in these seven stories. Happy reading, Opa Don

Book Grandpa s Noises

Download or read book Grandpa s Noises written by Gareth St John Thomas and published by EK Books. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children love laughing about body noises. In Grandpa's Noises, a range of sounds and words coming from body and mouth are explained in a warm and funny intergenerational romp. Children look at life with open, honest eyes but sometimes it takes a bit of thinking and code-breaking to work out what's really going on. Fortunately, for this particular grandchild, while Grandpa's noises might be a mystery to many, he knows just what they mean! For example, "Eyenolessgofurawark" is obviously Grandpa-speak for "I know, let’s go for a walk". "Aaaahhh" means the cup of tea is just perfect, and "Pissphusshawertt" is that sinking sound Grandpa makes when he needs a rest in his chair. And once you know that "Eeeawoscreech!" is actually the sound of a misbehaving hearing aid, Grandpa becomes a lot less scary and even more lovable. Of course some sounds - like the "Fffffffft" that sometimes escapes Grandpa’s bottom, and Dad's - need no explanation!

Book excerpt: The funny man is a middling comic in an unnamed city. By day he takes care of his infant son, by night he performs in small clubs. His wife waits tables to support the family. It doesn't sound like much, but they're happy (more or less) - until the day he comes up with his magic gimmick. And what is it? He performs his set with his fist in his mouth. Jokes, impressions, commercials - all take place with his fist wrist-deep in his mouth. People are crazy for him, but he's tired of it. This brilliant debut documents one man's slide from everyman to monster.

Book excerpt: Between 1933 and the end of World War II, over 3,000 Jews from countries all across Europe fled what was an almost certain death there to find freedom and safety in a small country in South America. Most of them had never heard of it before there was nowhere else to run: Ecuador. Some left for the U.S. or Israel after five or ten years. Others decided to make it their permanent home. Today, there are less than 1,000 Jews still living in Ecuador. Why did they decide to stay? Each family’s story is different. Every single person has their own, unique memories of their early days in Ecuador. The Boy with Four Names is the story of one family, and one boy who ended up with four names. You will enjoy this book whether you’re thirteen or sixty-three!

Book excerpt: Thirty-eight-year-old Xeni is secretly praying for a virgin birth—what could possibly go wrong? Xeni is a first-generation Greek American, raised in the Greek Orthodox faith, and trained in all the essential skills of a traditional Greek housewife. She knows how to make any Greek dish scrumptious, but the one recipe she hasn’t mastered is how to make a baby—by virgin birth. Xeni is a lesbian and struggles daily to resolve what she wants with what she doesn't—praying for a miracle. Meanwhile, free-spirited Callie, who ended up with a baby conceived during a boozy one-night stand, is trying to bridge a cultural divide with Gus, her Greek American baby daddy, by learning to cook just like his mother. When Xeni spots Callie in the produce aisle selecting limp spinach and tofu for spanakopita, she's compelled to offer her assistance. After all, food can create miracles, and they both need one. With undeniable chemistry from their first cooking lesson, Xeni and Callie sublimate their intense attraction to one another by creating mouthwatering meals. But their good intentions are blown to shreds when Gus's mother arrives from Greece and decides that Xeni, not Callie, would make the perfect Greek wife for Gus. Now Xeni must once and for all reconcile her religious beliefs with her sexuality—and decide which love is ultimately the higher power. The Feasting Virgin is a delectable novel that is full of heart, humor, magical realism, and a veritable feast full of tasty recipes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Witnessing the Badger is a boating adventure story in the spirit of Arthur Ransome or The Hardy Boys novels that will appeal not only to young readers, but nostalgic adults as well. The story covers territory from Ontarios beautiful Georgian Bay to Lake Michigan, with all points in between, and culminates in a terrifying night-time encounter with the Russian Mafia. This classic good vs. evil story will appeal to anyone who has spent time around the water. And for those who have not been in this happy situation, the book invites you to try it. Youll like it. Author Steven Duff has spent a lifetime in and around boats. He maintains and sails a small fleet of classic boats and has "covered the waterfront" under sail on all the Great Lakes and to New York City. Following retirement from a career as a high-school music teacher, Mr. Duff has been active as a writer, with five books and nearly 100 magazine articles to his credit, covering such diverse topics as history, music, and transportation. As well, he is an enthusiastic artist; not surprisingly, his preference is for seascapes "with something interesting sailing past." The father of two adult daughters and grandfather to two young boaters, Steven Duff lives in Parry Sound, Ontario, with his wife Debra and a toy poodle named Bruno. http: //sbpra.com/StevenDuff
