Book The Siege of the South Pole Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Siege of the South Pole Classic Reprint written by Hugh Robert Mill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Siege of the South Pole In trying to elucidate the origin as well as to describe the events of the various expeditions, I have assumed that from the historical point of view the motive and the aim are as important as the resulting achievement or failure. The story is told to the best of my power with an impartial mind, and scrupulously follows the facts; if any error has been made as to the narrative it is a mistake and not due to any bias. Where an opinion is expressed that Opinion is my own, and though I consider it right it may possibly seem wrong to some. Book The Siege and Conquest of the North Pole Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Siege and Conquest of the North Pole Classic Reprint written by George Bryce and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Siege and Conquest of the North Pole My chief object in compiling this work has been to supply a brief account of the main efforts which have been made to reach the North Pole. The subject is now so extensive that few have the opportunity of covering the whole ground. While the exciting and specially interesting incidents have not been omitted, the book aims at giving the reader an intelligent idea of the equipment and other means by which the work of exploration has been carried on. The many expeditions which have set out to find a north-west or a north-east passage do not come within the scope of the book, except when they have had some special bearing on the struggle for the Pole. Those who may wish to pursue the subject further by consulting the original authors can be assured that no works of fiction relate greater deeds of heroism than are found in the records of Arctic exploration; and that while they may satisfy their love for the adventurous they will add something to their geographical knowledge. Download or read book The North Pole written by Robert E. Peary and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The North Pole: Its Discovery in 1909 Under the Auspices of the Peary Arctic Club Some years ago I met at a dinner in Washington the famous Norwegian arctic explorer, Nansen, himself one of the heroes of polar adventure; and he remarked to me, "Peary is your best man; in fact I think he is on the whole the best of the men now trying to reach the Pole, and there is a good chance that he will be the one to succeed." I cannot give the exact words; but they were to the above effect; and they made a strong impression on me. I thought of them when in the summer of 1908 I, as President of the United States, went aboard Peary's ship to bid him Godspeed on the eve of what proved to be his final effort to reach the Pole. A year later, when I was camped on the northern foothills of Mt. Kenia, directly under the equator, I received by a native runner the news that he had succeeded, and that thanks to him the discovery of the North Pole was to go on the honor roll of those feats in which we take a peculiar pride because they have been performed by our fellow countrymen. Probably few outsiders realize the well-nigh incredible toil and hardship entailed in such an achievement as Peary's; and fewer still understand how many years of careful training and preparation there must be before the feat can be even attempted with any chance of success. A "dash for the pole" can be successful only if there have been many preliminary years of painstaking, patient toil. Download or read book Finding the North Pole written by Charles Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finding the North Pole: Commander Peary's Discovery, April 6, 1909 and Cook's Own Story of His Claim The arguments against the winter night march were as fol lows: That we could not procure fresh water to drink by melting the snows with our alcohol lamps because the snow where we found it in the winter season was saturated with salt; the grinding and pulverizing of the salt-water hummocks, by the wind-driven snow acting as a sand blast, mixed the salt ice with the snow. As a point to remember I will here state the fact that during the whole of the drift of the jeannette, twenty-two months, we were never able to procure one pound of fresh-water snow, not even out of the ship's tops, that was fresh enough when melted to make potable water. Every ounce of water used in the Jeannette for drinking purposes was distilled. To travel in the Arctic darkness heretofore had always seemed impossible because of the inability to see how to go, or follow a compass course. Book The Heart of the Antarctic Vol 1

Download or read book The Heart of the Antarctic Vol 1 written by Ernest Henry Shackleton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. 1: Being the Story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909 The scientific results of the expedition cannot be stated in detail in this book. The expert members in each branch have contributed to the appendices articles which summarise what has been done in the domains of geology, biology, magnetism, meteorology, physics, &c. I will simply indicate here some of the more important features of the geographical work. We passed the winter of 1908 in McMurdo Sound, twenty miles north of the Discovery winter quarters. In the autumn a party ascended Mount Erebus and surveyed its various craters. In the spring and summer of 1908-9 three sledging-parties left winter quarters; one went south and attained the most southerly latitude ever reached by man, and another reached the South Magnetic pole for the first time; while a third surveyed the mountain ranges west of McMurdo Sound. The Southern sledge-party planted the Union Jack in latitude 88 23' South, within one hundred geographical miles of the South Pole. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1750 and 1920 over 15,000 people visited Antarctica. Despite such a large number the historiography has ignored all but a few celebrated explorers.
