Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the birth of modernity, Western thought has been at war with clichés. The association of philosophical and cultural integrity with originality, and the corresponding need for invention and novelty, has been a distinct concern of a whole spectrum of ideas and movements, from Nietzsche’s polemics against the ‘herd’, the ‘shock of the new’ of the artistic avant-garde, the Frankfurt School’s critique of mass culture, to Orwell’s defence of political dialogue from ‘dying metaphors’. This book is the first examination of the cliché as a philosophical concept. Challenging the idea that clichés are lazy or spurious opposites to genuine thinking, it instead locates them as a dynamic and contestable boundary between ‘thought’ and ‘non-thought’. The book unpacks the constituent phenomena of clichés – repetition, circulation, the readymade, same-ness – through readings of ‘anti-philosophical’ thinkers such as Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Paulhan, de Certeau, Derrida, Sloterdijk, Badiou and Groys. In doing so, the book critically articulates the techniques and technologies through which the boundary between ‘thought’ and ‘non-thought’ is formed in modern Western philosophy. Rejecting the idea that clichés should be dismissed out of hand on normative frameworks of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ thinking, or ‘new’ and ‘old’ ideas, it instead interrogates the material, cultural and archival ground on which these frameworks are built.

Book The Shock Doctrine

Download or read book The Shock Doctrine written by Naomi Klein and published by Metropolitan Books. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of No Logo shows how the global "free market" has exploited crises and shock for three decades, from Chile to Iraq In her groundbreaking reporting, Naomi Klein introduced the term "disaster capitalism." Whether covering Baghdad after the U.S. occupation, Sri Lanka in the wake of the tsunami, or New Orleans post-Katrina, she witnessed something remarkably similar. People still reeling from catastrophe were being hit again, this time with economic "shock treatment," losing their land and homes to rapid-fire corporate makeovers. The Shock Doctrine retells the story of the most dominant ideology of our time, Milton Friedman's free market economic revolution. In contrast to the popular myth of this movement's peaceful global victory, Klein shows how it has exploited moments of shock and extreme violence in order to implement its economic policies in so many parts of the world from Latin America and Eastern Europe to South Africa, Russia, and Iraq. At the core of disaster capitalism is the use of cataclysmic events to advance radical privatization combined with the privatization of the disaster response itself. Klein argues that by capitalizing on crises, created by nature or war, the disaster capitalism complex now exists as a booming new economy, and is the violent culmination of a radical economic project that has been incubating for fifty years.

Book Calculated Effects of Body Shape on the Bow shock Overpressures in the Far Field of Bodies in Supersonic Flow

Download or read book Calculated Effects of Body Shape on the Bow shock Overpressures in the Far Field of Bodies in Supersonic Flow written by Donald L. Lansing and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory developed by G.B. Whitham (Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, August 1952) for the supersonic flow about bodies in uniform flight in a homogeneous medium is reviewed and an integral which expresses the effect of body shape upon the flow parameters in the far field is reduced to a form which may be readily evaluated for arbitrary body shapes. This expression is then used to investigate the effect of nose angle, fineness ratio, and location of maximum body cross section upon the far-field pressure jump across the bow shock of slender bodies. Curves are presented showing the variation of the shock strength with each of these parameters. It is found that, for a wide variety of shapes having equal fineness ratios, the integral has nearly a constant value. Hence, to a first order, the pressure jump in the far field is independent of the shape and depends only upon the fineness ratio.

Book Mechanical Vibration and Shock Analysis Mechanical Shock

Download or read book Mechanical Vibration and Shock Analysis Mechanical Shock written by Christian Lalanne and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume considers the shock response spectrum, its various definitions, properties and the assumptions involved in its calculation. In developing the practical application of these concepts, the forms of shock most often used with test facilities are presented together with their characteristics and indications of how to establish test configurations comparable with those in the real, measured environment. This is followed by a demonstration of how to meet these specifications using standard laboratory equipment – shock machines, electrodynamic exciters driven by a time signal or a response spectrum – with a discussion on the limitations, advantages and disadvantages of each method.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The classic work that predicted the anxieties of a world upended by rapidly emerging technologies—and now provides a road map to solving many of our most pressing crises. “Explosive . . . brilliantly formulated.” —The Wall Street Journal Future Shock is the classic that changed our view of tomorrow. Its startling insights into accelerating change led a president to ask his advisers for a special report, inspired composers to write symphonies and rock music, gave a powerful new concept to social science, and added a phrase to our language. Published in over fifty countries, Future Shock is the most important study of change and adaptation in our time. In many ways, Future Shock is about the present. It is about what is happening today to people and groups who are overwhelmed by change. Change affects our products, communities, organizations—even our patterns of friendship and love. But Future Shock also illuminates the world of tomorrow by exploding countless clichés about today. It vividly describes the emerging global civilization: the rise of new businesses, subcultures, lifestyles, and human relationships—all of them temporary. Future Shock will intrigue, provoke, frighten, encourage, and, above all, change everyone who reads it.

Book Shock turbulence Interaction and Richtmyer Meshkov Instability in Spherical Geometry

Download or read book Shock turbulence Interaction and Richtmyer Meshkov Instability in Spherical Geometry written by Ankit Vijay Bhagatwala and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The canonical problems of shock-turbulence interaction and Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) are central to understanding the hydrodynamic processes involved in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF). Over the last few decades, there has been considerable analytical, computational and experimental work on the planar versions of these problems. In spite of the problem of interest being spherical in nature, there have been few studies in any of the three areas for these problems. It is not clear a priori, that the conclusions drawn from planar versions of these problems carry over to the spherical domain. The research presented here represents a first attempt to understand the hydrodynamic processes involved in an Inertial Fusion Engine (IFE) from capsule implosion to interaction of the resulting shock waves with the chamber gases. To abstract the key hydrodynamic components from the complex physics involved in an IFE, three canonical problems are identified and simulated: Interaction of a blast wave with isotropic turbulence, interaction of a converging shock with isotropic turbulence and RMI in spherical geometry. The last problem is a hydrodynamic abstraction of the capsule implosion itself, while the first two problems attempt to model the late stage interaction of fusion induced shock waves with chamber gases. On the shock-turbulence front, the study primarily focuses on the effect of shock strength relative to background turbulence on vorticity dynamics, which forms the cornerstone of any turbulence simulation. The effect of turbulence on shock structure is also characterized. For the converging shock, the maximum compression achieved in presence of turbulence is compared with that for a pure shock. For spherical RMI, focus is on evolution of the mixing layer and growth in vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy for different incident shock Mach numbers. The effect of interface perturbation on maximum compression achieved, which is one of the most important metrics for feasible ICF, is also considered.

Book Shock Dynamics

Download or read book Shock Dynamics written by Z. Han and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written as a graduate student course--Shock Dynamics. Up to now, the first author has taught this course to the graduate students in the field of Fluid Mechanics, Department of Modern Mechanics, University of Science and Technology of China for seven times. In the spring semester 1989, during his visit to the United States, the first author taught this course to the graduate students of Department of Mathemat ics, University of Colorado at Denver. At the same time, he gave a series of four lectures on Shock Dynamics to the graduate students of Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences, University of Colorado at Boulder. In 1991, during the first author's visit to Japan, he gave some lectures on Shock Dynamics in Tohoku University, University of Tokyo and Kyushu Uni versity. The dynamic phenomena of shock waves such as propagation, diffraction, reflection, refraction and interaction of shock waves may be studied by using experimental methods, numerical calculations and theoretical analyses. Although the detailed flow patterns of phenomena of shock motion can be obtained by using experimental methods and numerical calculations of solving Euler Equation or Navier-Stokes Equation, for example, the diffractions of shock waves by wedges form various phenomena of reflection--RR, SMR, CMR and DMR, we also need to analyse the process of the formation of shock waves in various phenomena of diffraction, reflection and interaction by using theoretical methods.

Book Fundamentals of Shock Wave Propagation in Solids

Download or read book Fundamentals of Shock Wave Propagation in Solids written by Lee Davison and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-05-07 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My intent in writing this book is to present an introduction to the thermo- chanical theory required to conduct research and pursue applications of shock physics in solid materials. Emphasis is on the range of moderate compression that can be produced by high-velocity impact or detonation of chemical exp- sives and in which elastoplastic responses are observed and simple equations of state are applicable. In the interest of simplicity, the presentation is restricted to plane waves producing uniaxial deformation. Although applications often - volve complex multidimensional deformation fields it is necessary to begin with the simpler case. This is also the most important case because it is the usual setting of experimental research. The presentation is also restricted to theories of material response that are simple enough to permit illustrative problems to be solved with minimal recourse to numerical analysis. The discussions are set in the context of established continuum-mechanical principles. I have endeavored to define the quantities encountered with some care and to provide equations in several convenient forms and in a way that lends itself to easy reference. Thermodynamic analysis plays an important role in continuum mechanics, and I have included a presentation of aspects of this subject that are particularly relevant to shock physics. The notation adopted is that conventional in expositions of modern continuum mechanics, insofar as possible, and variables are explained as they are encountered. Those experienced in shock physics may find some of the notation unconventional.
