Book excerpt: The Shepherd Leader is a book that strives to bring the importance of shepherding to the forefront of our thinking about what church leaders should do and, therefore, what they should be. Too many church leaders perceive of themselves as a "board of directors" when the Bible is clear that they are to know, feed, lead, and protect the flock entrusted to their care.

Book excerpt: An invitation for overachievers to discover what it means to rest as God's daughters without compromising their God-given design as doers. Are you a Martha who feels guilty for not being a Mary? Do you want to sit at Jesus’s feet as Mary did—but you feel the need to get things done? In Made Like Martha, Katie M. Reid invites you to exchange try-hard striving for hope-filled freedom without abandoning your doer’s heart in the process. Through her own story and rich biblical illustrations, Katie reminds you that it’s not important whether you sit and listen or stand and work. What matters is that your spiritual posture is one of a beloved daughter who knows she doesn’t need to earn God’s love. Your desire to get things done is not something to temper but something to embrace as you serve from a place of strength and peace—knowing Christ already did His most important work for you on the cross. With “It Is Finished” activities at the end of each chapter and a fiveweek Bible study included, Made Like Martha helps you find rest from striving even as you celebrate your God-given design to “do.” “Made Like Martha will infuse your life with a fresh perspective as you learn both to embrace your God-given personality and also discover how—and when—to rest and retreat.” —Karen Ehman, Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker and New York Times bestselling author of Keep It Shut

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A church member has just lost a parent. Another member is scheduled for surgery. Yet another member is having marital problems. Just another day in the life of a congregation. Church leaders (both clergy and lay) give immeasurable comfort and nourishment to those in need. But it sometimes leaves them drained, stressed, and wounded. Feed My Shepherds addresses the struggles and burnout experienced by those in caregiving ministries and offers practical tips for practicing healthy spirituality. "While all Christians need nurture, the active leader who encounters spiritual and emotional stress daily has special, urgent needs," writes Wuellner. "If the shepherd is not fed along with the sheep, that inner hunger and fatigue, those unhealed hurts can cause the shepherd to do great, unconscious harm to those within his or her care." By looking at the intense, healing relationship between the risen Jesus and his disciples, Wuellner offers a paradigm of healing for today's disciples as well. She draws on scriptures from the Gospels' post-Resurrection narratives and adds spiritual reflections, personal questions, and guided meditations that can meet a variety of needs.

Book Hit the Bullseye

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul D. Borden
  • Publisher : Abingdon Press
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 0687043719
  • Pages : 162 pages

Download or read book Hit the Bullseye written by Paul D. Borden and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not an attempt to offer hope, help, or even advice on what denominations need to do. However, it is a book about a significant turn-around of a middle-level administration of justice in one Protestant denomination and it does offer hope that other like administrations might be able to experience a better and more effective existence. Everyone's experience is unique and therefore cannot be replicated. However, the implementation of foundational all-encompassing principles, the development of new strategies, and the performance of specific tactics that are successful in one situation does offer hope to others that their modeling of the principles, adapting the strategies, and creating specific tactics to fit their context can bring change. "Thisbook is a gutsy look at denominational life, leadership and vision, and offersnew paradigms for the local church, middle judicatories and nationaldenominational life. A must-read for anyone interested in bringing renewal tothe local church and our denomination. Clearly, Borden has hit the bull's-eyewith regard not only to our denomination's needs but also how renewal begins inthe local church." - ABE News Forewordto Hit the Bullseye byLeith Anderson July 2003 "Somelook at things that are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were and askwhy not?" --George Bernard Shaw There are approximately 400,000 churches in the UnitedStates and the vast majority of them belong to denominations. Some are healthy, vibrant, and growing. Most are tired, struggling, not growing, and don't know what to do. Plenty of critics and cynics take surveys, analyze data, and write books about what is wrong with the churches of America. As if following the theology of Chicken Little they are convinced that the sky is falling and there is little wecan do except seek cover. Proposals for renewal often are offered by theoristswho tell practitioners what to do but have never actually done it themselves. What if? What if there was a way to help declining churches to grow? What if we could teach pastors how to lead their congregations tospiritual renewal? What if thousands of churches changed from maintenance tomission? What if a movement beganwith 200 churches that grew to 200,000 churches? What if millions of unchurched people came into lasting relationshipswith Jesus Christ and the church? Whatif the denominations of America with all of their people, property, andpotential became the epicenter of this spiritual earthquake that became known asthe Great Awakening of the 21st Century? Maybe all this sounds too good to be true. Well, it has already begun. Centeredin the earthquake zone of northern California, the American Baptist Churches ofthe West have demonstrated that a plateaued and declining region of mainlinecongregations can become a model of healthy and growing congregations. They have overcome the usual excuses that "our churches are toosmall," "we have too many older people and congregations," and "propertyhere is too expensive." Theyfollowed a powerful formula of biblical strategies, courageous leadership, andmuch hard work. What is mostamazing is that the turnaround took less than five years. Why not? Here is the dream. Denominationalleaders, executive ministers, bishops, district superintendents, regionaldirectors, seminary teachers, pastors, and lay leaders will discover what Godhas done in northern California and say, "Why not here?" "With a few creative adaptations we can do the same thing in ourdenomination and in our churches." They will start small and multiply. They will risk their traditions, finances, staff, and jobs. They will respond to misunderstanding with teaching and take criticismwith grace. Then there will be onesuccessful church transformation--new vision, new faith, new people, and newexcitement. One will become ten andten will become one hundred. Churchby church, region by region, denomination by denomination--a true reformationwill bring a great new era to the people and churches of our generation. It can be done. Ithas been done. This is a dream ofthe way things can be. Be amongthose who say, "Why not? Let'sdo it!"

Book excerpt: Most of the other characters in the book are fictional and the common Kashmiri epitomised by Yousuf remains dear to my heart. He is wise, God fearing, hardworking and humble to the core. I often wonder if men like him still exist and if there are, I sure hope their tribe grows. The book is divided into six chapters with each having an Article, Wisdom of Shepherds lesson and a Piece of Art which has taken me many years to finish. The work is done using the Pashmina Hair (Finest and the Purest) and vegetable dyes to create a colourful work using needles (which I learnt in this journey). This work has forced me to Disconnect and Hibernate for months together while I was travelling like a nomad. I am happy that I like what I have been able to produce. I have made some real connect with my inner self in this journey of exploration of Art and experimenting with a medium which has never ever been attempted before. I seek inspiration from some great Artists of the World and now when I see my work, my Opinion, that Art is the Final Expression becomes even stronger and there is nothing more to seek. I fervently hope this book brings about a change in the attitude of people towards their surroundings and each one of us embarks on a journey that takes us on the path we were meant to walk on.
