Book The Mammoth Book of Shark Attacks

Download or read book The Mammoth Book of Shark Attacks written by Alex MacCormick and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biggest-ever selection of first-hand accounts and news reports of shark attacks, both recent and historical, shows how sharks are masters of the ocean and how we enter their domain at our own risk. Think you're safe in the Med? Read about the Great Whites that thrive near holiday beaches. Think you're safe in large groups? Read about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in 1945 when hundreds of sailors floated for days in shark-infested waters, being picked off one-by-one. Think you're safe at home? Read about the 69-year-old man, taking his regular evening swim, jumping off his backyard dock straight into the mouth of a bull shark. Many more extraordinary and gruesome accounts, including the shark-boat skipper who slit open the belly of a 360-kg tiger shark only to have a human head, pelvis, and arm come tumbling out, provide horrific and moving tales of shark encounters. The courage of survivors and those who have risked their lives to save shark attack victims is truly inspirational. Where can you find sharks? Features on different shark species with illustrations, fact boxes and maps show where they lurk around the world. Also included are a selection of full-colour photographs and special sections on the life cycle of a shark, how to avoid a shark attack and how to survive one.

  • Author : Richard Ellis
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2012-04-17
  • ISBN : 1461747929
  • Pages : 291 pages

Download or read book Shark written by Richard Ellis and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The sharks, ancient or modern, real or imaginary, have always been with us, and will probably remain with us forever. They appear not only in movies and literature, but in countless permutations of size, shape, and materials, permeating our daily lives with their silent menace. In a sense, humans live in a world replete with sharks, not vice-versa.” Thus Richard Ellis sets about chronicling and debunking the myths of sharks throughout history. From 18th century art to the phenomena of JAWS, “the shark” has remained the indomitable aggressor of the deep, the last demon of humankind. The image of the shark and the fear it inspires infiltrates our daily lives with its mythical power and strength. But it is not man who should fear the shark. Our need to dominate these predators is destroying them and their habitat. Through hundreds of full-color images Ellis proves the necessity of preserving these majestic creatures. As curator of the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art’s exhibition entitled “Shark”, debuting May 2012, Ellis adeptly turns these sleek, efficient hunters from monsters of the deep into rare, beautiful forces of nature.

Book Memoirs of a Shark Hunter

Download or read book Memoirs of a Shark Hunter written by Norman Bateman and published by . This book was released on 2015-12-24 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was busy swimming out my bait in a one-man life raft and was about 200 yards off the South Padre Island jetty. I had the bloody tail half of a Tarpon there in my lap as I leaned back to paddle the raft with my arms. Instant fear gripped me when I saw the big dorsal fin of a Great Hammerhead Shark slicing through the water right for me. The blood in my veins froze instantly! The shark started circling my raft about 10 or 15 feet or so from me and made about three complete circles around me. I remember his eye. His head was tilted somewhat and his eye was just above the surface, just watching me. I felt his dorsal fin scrape across my back as he dove under my raft. He was in the 10 to 11 foot size range. I remember the feeling the sheer terror. It almost freezes you in place. And I was fearful that his dorsal fin would scrape a hole in the bottom of my raft as he swam under me. Believe me that feeling of terror is a feeling that you never forget, never ever. I looked back toward the jetties and there stood Don Monroe frozen and pointing like Ahab did when he saw the white whale. I could barely hear Monroe's words, "Thaarrrrrr she blows!"
