Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sewerage of Sea Coast Towns In the following chapters no attempt has been made to describe the details of, or make calculations for, any particular scheme, because, as stated in the opening chapter, the conditions vary so considerably in every case that what is applicable to one place is totally unsuitable for another. The matter contained therein has, therefore, been confined, as far as possible, to the fundamental principles involved, and these have been dealt with in such a manner that the information may be utilised to suit the exigencies of all cases; as, for instance, where formulae are required, such as for calculating the discharge of weirs and of pipes, several alternative ones are mentioned, and their solution explained, so that, by selecting the most suitable, accurate results can be obtained. In dealing with the behaviour of concrete employed in submarine works, the results of the most important experiments of recent years are given at length, and with regard to the actual design of sea outfalls, numerous typical examples are given, one of which, or an adaptation thereof, may be selected for application in any given case. The surveying problems that may be required in connection with the current observations are all given with the necessary calculations, and are expressed in such a manner that they can be utilised by any one with a knowledge of logarithms and the use of logarithmic tables, even if they have no knowledge of trigonometry. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sewerage of Two New Hampshire Towns (Keene and Laconia) The Ashuelot is subject to high floods. The outlet of the central main sewer is sometimes submerged to a depth of six or eight feet, and much of the flat area through which the Beaver brook main runs is under water, in some cases over the t0ps of the manholes. These conditions indicated that it would probably be necessary to make use of jet pumps near the outlets of these lines, to maintain a flow during high stages of the river. It was found, however, that during the spring flood of 1884, which was unusually high, the natural flow of the sewers maintained a constant current through the whole system. No inconvenience was caused by the failure of the house drains, even in the lower portions of the town, to dis charge freely and it was thought unnecessary to carry out this part of the plan at present. The indications now (1891) are, that such an aid may be required at the outlet of the central main. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sewerage of Village-Cities: An Address Delivered Before the American Social Science Association I begin with the idea that the most costly and the most dangerous scavenger that a city can employ is the rain that falls upon the sur face oi its streets. Under proper municipal control the organic mat ter deposited in the streets may easily be confined almost entirely to the droppings of horses, and this material has a value which will go a long way towards paying the cost of its immediate collection and removal. Even were this not the case, the necessity for performing such work regularly and systematically, with a View to the preserva tion of the purity of the atmosphere of the town, needs no argu ment. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ways and Means of Relieving Cities of Sewerage We deem it our duty to publish the above, the many suggestions which have been made from all sides inducing us to come forward with the result of our experience, and also With our per sonal knowledge of the subject. We have no desire to create any anxiety by our description of the state of matters here, but it is of great impor tance to bring the same before the public, to avoid large and unnecessary expenses in con structing a pumping and sewer system to rid their place of the faecal matter, while a practical and well tried system has already been proven successful, from which we can, at a small outlay, have the benefit of long tedious experiments which have cost large sums of money. Thus, we have shown the only method by which this end can be accomplished, though not perhaps immediately, may be the case in the near future, and relieve the authorities and citizens from prevalent helplessness, through the disposal of this fwcal matter. Download or read book The Cleaning and Sewerage of Cities Classic Reprint written by Reinhard Baumeister and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cleaning and Sewerage of Cities The first part of Prof. Baumeister's book - here omitted concerns plans for the extension of cities, for pavements, and street railways. This omission is justified by the existence of publica tions on these subjects which are well adapted to American wants. The second part - forming the present volume - concerns the de sign and construction of sewerage works, the purification of sewage, street cleaning, and refuse removal. After stating the general principles governing grades, depth, outlets, and alignments, the author, in Chapters 2 and 3, enters upon the question of the quantities of sewage and rain-water to be provided for. It is asserted that the German practice in design ing water-works is to allow 40 galls. Per head per day. In America the water consumption is much greater and also varies in different cities, reaching in some instances more than three times the above amount. Book The Sewerage of the Village of Geneva New York Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sewerage of the Village of Geneva New York Classic Reprint written by Geneva Sewer Commissioners and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-03-14 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sewerage of the Village of Geneva, New York The entire question of the proper disposal of sewage of towns is still in an experimental stage. Various methods have been proposed and tried for the purification of sewage. One of the most effective of these, is filtration through land, which requires the acquisition of a large tract of ground of gravelly material, underdrained to a depth of five or six feet. The effluent from these drains is in some cases satisfactory, in others not, and complaint is made of the the effluent flowing into streams. Another method is that of chemical sedimentation, in which certain chemicals are added to the sewage; the solid matters are deposited quickly while the effluent is partially purified and is allowed to flow ofl; the sludge which is deposited being either carried away, or by mechanical means compressed into cakes and consumed, as at the Columbian Exposition at Chicago, in a Cremator. Another method which has attracted attention recently is that of purification by Electrolysis. This method is still in an experimental stage entirely, and While good results are claimed by its advocates, its efficiency is not acknowledged by all. Book Sewerage and Sewage Disposal a Textbook Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sewerage and Sewage Disposal a Textbook Classic Reprint written by Leonard Metcalf and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewerage and Sewage Disposal a d104book Since the three volumes of "American Sewerage Practice" were published in 1914-1915, the authors have been urged to prepare a single-volume abridgment of them for class use in engineering schools. The authors were reluctant to do this, because of two conditions. The first is the great variation in the time devoted to sewerage engineering in different schools. This has the result that a textbook so brief as to verge on the superficial from the viewpoint of one class may be too detailed for another. The second condition is the fact that some of those features of sewerage engineering which in practice it is most important to master are apparently held by those laying out college courses to deserve little attention from students. For example, a wise estimate of the quantities of sewage and storm water to be handled is the basis of design of a sewerage system, yet the methods of preparing such estimates and actual practice in their use receive relatively little attention in college courses. Furthermore, the best arrangement of the main sewers in a sewerage plan may depend largely upon the treatment, if any, that the sewage must receive before disposal and upon the place of disposal, subjects involving a knowledge of the nature of sewage and the changes which it undergoes under natural conditions or those involved in specific methods of treatment. Yet some college classes in sewerage engineering receive no instruction in sewage treatment. As the requests for a textbook continued, the authors finally decided to prepare a book giving the information which they consider it desirable for the young student to acquire before taking up work in this field. In a sense, they have felt under obligations as professional engineering specialists to do their part in smoothing the way for the first steps taken by engineering students in this branch of engineering. This book can be used in two ways. The text can be read and mastered within the time allotted to the subject even when the course is very short.
