Book excerpt: "Jason Gurley will be a household name one day." – Hugh Howey Book 1 of The Movement Trilogy Earth is on the brink of ruin. Great storms destroy cities. Rising seas reshape the continents. Afraid for its survival, mankind constructs a fleet of space stations in orbit, and steps off-world. Among the humans fighting for their future are Micah Sparrow, a widower who uncovers a plot to return mankind to the dark ages; Tasneem Kyoh, who undergoes life-extension treatments and begins the search for humanity's next home; and David Dewbury, a prodigy who believes he knows where that home might be. But in space, the rules aren't the only things that have changed. Man himself has changed, and with the Earth in tatters behind him, man turns his attention to the one thing left to destroy: himself. The Settlers is the explosive first book in Jason Gurley's Movement Trilogy, the epic story of man's small step into space, and the great leaps humanity must make to save its own future.

Book excerpt: Located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the Arroyo Grande Valley was founded during the period of the Mexican land grants. In 1837, the San Manuela Rancho was granted to Francis and Manuela Branch. The rich soils and mild coastal climate created a wonderful location to build a home, grow crops, and raise livestock. While livestock production has diminished, it has been replaced by a growing wine industry and field crops continue to flourish. Arroyo Grande remains one of the most pleasant and safest environments to live and work and maintains much of its historic village commercial area with little change over the past 100 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When looking at historical photographs of Guadalupe residents, one sees the faces that represent the area's unique and diverse past. Originally inhabited by the indigenous Chumash and mapped by Spanish explorers, Guadalupe was first named in the 1840s Mexican land grant honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe, the title given to the Virgin Mary. Through the years, waves of immigrants made their way to Guadalupe to take advantage of the fertile soil and unique geographic features, the most prominent of which are the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes, which contain some of the tallest sand dunes on Earth and have been visited by locals and tourists for the last century and a half. It was in the 1920s that Hollywood discovered them and began introducing distant audiences to the region through the cinematic tradition that continues today.

Book This Land Was Mexican Once

Download or read book This Land Was Mexican Once written by Linda Heidenreich and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The territory of Napa County, California, contains more than grapevines. The deepest roots belong to Wappo-speaking peoples, a group whose history has since been buried by the stories of Spanish colonizers, Californios (today’s Latinos), African Americans, Chinese immigrants, and Euro Americans. Napa’s history clearly is one of co-existence; yet, its schoolbooks tell a linear story that climaxes with the arrival of Euro Americans. In “This Land was Mexican Once,” Linda Heidenreich excavates Napa’s subaltern voices and histories to tell a complex, textured local history with important implications for the larger American West, as well. Heidenreich is part of a new generation of scholars who are challenging not only the old, Euro-American depiction of California, but also the linear method of historical storytelling—a method that inevitably favors the last man writing. She first maps the overlapping histories that comprise Napa’s past, then examines how the current version came to dominate—or even erase—earlier events. So while history, in Heidenreich’s words, may be “the stuff of nation-building,” it can also be “the stuff of resistance.” Chapters are interspersed with “source breaks”—raw primary sources that speak for themselves and interrupt the linear, Euro-American telling of Napa’s history. Such an inclusive approach inherently acknowledges the connections Napa’s peoples have to the rest of the region, for the linear history that marginalizes minorities is not unique to Napa. Latinos, for instance, have populated the American West for centuries, and are still shaping its future. In the end, “This Land was Mexican Once” is more than the story of Napa, it is a multidimensional model for reflecting a multicultural past.
