Download or read book A Portrait of Jesus written by T. A. Prickett and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impulse to publish these sermons came to me after I had successfully published my book, For Our Age of Anxiety, based on the Sermon on the Mount. All of these sermons were first written and preached while I was pastor of the Seven Hills Baptist Church in Owensboro, Kentucky where I served for thirty-four years. As I considered the idea of publishing a follow up book of sermons from the remaining chapters of Matthew, I went to my files and began the process of selecting the sermons to be included. After I had selected these sermons, I began to see that they could be put together under the theme of a portrait of Jesus. This book features sermons that focus on the early days of the ministry of Jesus particularly as they related to the ministry of John the Baptist. They also shed some light on the temptations of Jesus in the desert, on the call of those who would be his first disciples, and what is involved in being a disciple of Jesus then and now. Some of the sermons are based on the miracles of Jesus, thus revealing the compassion of Jesus. These sermons also deal with the idea of the Kingdom of God, showing some of the principles and characteristics of the Kingdom. The last two sermons are about the person of Jesus. It is my hope that these sermons will indeed help the reader to draw his or her own mental and spiritual portrait of Jesus.

Book Preaching after Easter Mid Pentecost Ascension and Pentecost in Late Antiquity

Download or read book Preaching after Easter Mid Pentecost Ascension and Pentecost in Late Antiquity written by Richard W. Bishop and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies collected in Preaching after Easter examine the festal history and homiletics of Mid-Pentecost, Ascension, and Pentecost in the late antique Mediterranean world. Articles on individual sermons or the work of individual preachers such as John Chrysostom, Augustine of Hippo, Peter Chrysologus, Leo the Great, and Severus of Antioch exhibit the richness of late antique festal preaching. Questions of authenticity, heresiology, and theological, exegetical, or liturgical history are addressed with methodological rigor. Complementary contributions that deal with ancient Jewish-Christian dialogue, art-historical reception, and contemporary liturgical theology illustrate the wide ramifications of ancient Christian festal practice. Students and scholars of these feasts and the interpretive traditions devoted to them will find this volume to be an indispensable source of information and analysis.

Book Jesus Sermon on the Mount

Download or read book Jesus Sermon on the Mount written by Jack R. Lundbom and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5?7) is the best-known repository of the teachings of Jesus and one of the most studied. Amid the considerable erudition expended on the Sermon, however, Jack R. Lundbom argues that it has proven too easy to deflect or disregard the main thrust of the Sermon, which he characterizes as a mandate to holy living and a “greater righteousness.” Through careful attention to the structure of Matthew’s Gospel and the place of the Sermon within it, keen sensitivity to the patterns and themes of Israelite prophecy, and judicious comparisons with other Jewish and rabbinic literature, Lundbom elucidates the meaning of the Sermon and its continuity with Israel’s prophetic heritage as well as the best of Jewish teaching. By deft appeal to Christian commentators on the Sermon, Lundbom brings its most important themes to life for the contemporary reader, seeking always to understand what the “greater righteousness” to which the Sermon summons might mean for us today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The teaching of Jesus of Nazareth is unparalleled and universally acclaimed in the history of our world. Born into relative obscurity and poverty, no one has impacted the world to the same extent as Jesus. Amidst all he said and did, his close friend Matthew (a former social outcast) captured his teaching—delivered on a hillside just above the town where he lived, overlooking the Sea of Galilee. The fifth, sixth, and seventh chapters of Matthew’s Gospel, commonly referred to as the Sermon on the Mount, have been described as the essence of all that Jesus taught about God and how we relate with him. Every Christian (and every preacher!) must wrestle with the words of Jesus given on a Galilean hillside. If a person grasped nothing else of the words Jesus spoke, apart from that contained in the Sermon on the Mount, he or she catches the essence of his timeless message. This book unpacks the essence of Jesus’ teaching and its remarkable application in our current age—a resource for individual Christ-followers, preachers, and a discussion-starter for small groups.

Book Sermons of George Whitefield The 57 Preaching Lectures on Christian Theology History Bible Doctrine and Prophecy Complete

Download or read book Sermons of George Whitefield The 57 Preaching Lectures on Christian Theology History Bible Doctrine and Prophecy Complete written by George Whitefield and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A total of 57 lectures of George Whitefield, one of the most celebrated preachers of England and the American colonies in the 18th century, are presented here. Together, these lectures offer a profound insight into an innovative and often controversial preacher. A man of immense gifts for expression, George Whitefield would commonly drive an audience to tears with his sincere expressions of faith. Pushing the boundaries of his era, Whitefield rebelled against church authority and claimed that God himself permitted that he preach itinerant indoors and in the open air. Whitefield rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most pivotal Christians of his era. Too poor to afford tutelage, the young Whitefield managed to avoid tuition by acting as a servant to other students; assisting them to wash; cleaning their quarters; and carrying their books and satchels. Such menial work appeared to fire George Whitefield's spirit; he converted to Christianity and fervently attended to his studies thereafter.

The church of the 21st century is more like the church of the 1st century than that of the 20th century. Like then, we live in a world that is deeply divided, strongly segregated, with different parts of society not communicating with each other. Some are very passionate about their religion, willing to die or kill for it, for others religion is irrelevant. - Dr. David Moffett-Moore Jesus' Sermon on the Mount can accurately be described as His manifesto. A teaching with life-changing wisdom in each sentence; a teaching that will not release you from your seat until you have submitted to God's way. Whether in a small group or a personal study time, The Jesus Manifesto will bring Living Water to your spirit.

Book The Teachings of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount

Download or read book The Teachings of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount written by James Thomas Lee, Jr. and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first part of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus had made four points. First, He had told His listeners to be poor in spirit which meant that they should have a heart and a mind that would be open to His instructions. Second, He had made some specific promises to those that are poor in spirit, mourning over their spiritual condition, meek, hungering and thirsting after righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, and makers of peace. He had then spoken to those people that would be persecuted for His name's sake. He had spoken to those that had had a responsibility to be salt and light. Third, He had shared His high view of the scriptures and had showed that His life and His ministry would not contradict anything that the Jewish people had been taught in the Old Testament. Fourth, He had showed His deity by presenting a higher lifestyle for His followers on such matters as anger, adultery, divorce, making oaths, self-sacrifice, and dealing with one's enemies. In the second part of His sermon, He had given advice about how the saints of God should conduct their lives. He had openly criticized the scribes and the Pharisees because of their hypocritical giving of alms and because of their long public prayers. He had also taught His listeners how they should pray. He had spoken to them about the importance of forgiving others because forgiven people should be forgiving people. He had then concluded the second part of His sermon by emphasizing how important it is to put the Lord FIRST in ALL things. Godly people should use their treasures of time, talent, and resources in ways that will accomplish the Lord's will in this existence. That means that the saints of God should be concerned about those individuals that will leave this existence NOT SAVED because that was and is the major concern of the Lord. It was for that reason that He had died on the cross at Calvary. Finally in being consistent with that idea of serving the Lord and of doing His will is also the idea that a person would be wiser serving Him than chasing after all of the meaningless, temporal pursuits of this existence. In the third part of His sermon, Jesus had dealt with the problem among many people of being too judgmental when it comes to other people. He had told His listeners to worry more about their own faults than about the faults of others. He had next shared three levels of prayer where each one is a little more persistent than the other. Knocking is being more persistent than just seeking which is being more persistent than just asking. He had encouraged His listeners to live by the Golden Rule which simply means to treat others as one would want to be treated by others. Then, in the next part of His sermon, He had begun talking more about eternal issues. He had indicated that most people are on the wide path that leads to the wide gate that leads to eternal destruction. But that is definitely not where one really wants to be either in this life or in the life to come. He had next warned His listeners about false prophets which can also be anyone in the ministry that is teaching false doctrine. One can know them according to Him by their fruit or by what they produce. Such individuals are like those that have built their house on the sand, and they will be very harshly judged in the end. So the overriding theme of the Sermon of the Mount is to seek the Lord with all of one's heart and come to Him by faith early in life. It is to fully live for Him throughout one's life.
