Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the effect of movement distance and starting quadrant as sources of kinesthetic information on the recall of kinesthetic information from short-term memory. There were four factors of experimental interest: sensory modality, period of delay angular distance and starting quadrant. The dependent variable was the absolute error between the initial trial and the reproduction trial distances. The input and reproduction trials were performed with a smoothly rotating handle. The subjects were nine university physical education students. The experimental design was a treatment by subjects, factorial, complete block, randomized repeated measures design replicated four times for each subject. A four-way analy sis of variance was computed and a Duncan's Multiple Range Test was calculated for the significant main effects. A test for linearity was also calculated for the main effect of distance. It was concluded that an increase in the distance to be reproduced caused a decrease in the performance accuracy. There was a linear relationship between the amount of error and the log (base two) of the distance. It was also concluded that the recall of visually stored information was superior to the recall of kinesthetically stored information. Due to debatable experimental technique, conclusions on the other main effects were not considered warranted.

The first section consists of seven papers and is devoted entirely to the learning of motor skills. The second section is divided between movement memory and perception. In recent years there has been a decline in the popularity of movement memory as a research topic. However, some recent advances in cognitive science, and parallel distributed processing in particular, may now provide the basis for a renewed interest. The topic of perception never enjoyed the popularity that motor skill learning and/or memory for movement did. However there is now a clearer understanding of the perceptual processes and invariances that affect how we perceive the world. Others, like the renewed interest in signal detection theory and quantal reaction time, serve notice that the perceptual part of perceptual motor-skills is here to stay.

Nine male right dominant students from the P.E. 218 class of the University of Alberta were chosen as subjects. Subjects were tested on a replacement accuracy task. The task required the subjects to rotate a handle in a clock wise direction until signalled to stop. Subjects removed their hands from the handle and the experimenter randomly repositioned it. Subjects were then asked to return the handle to the position in which they had left it. The difference between their first setting and their recall setting was measured in degrees. This error was the dependent variable. Each trial was performed under one of eighteen experimental conditions. These conditions comprised two conditions of sensory modality, three conditions of short-term memory and three conditions of constant weight load. Each subject repeated the experiment on four separate occasions. Raw data was collated and submitted to three way and five way analyses of variance.
