Book excerpt: The Selsey tramway was one of the most remarkable country railways in England. Less than eight miles long, it boasted no fewer than 11 stations. It used antiquated engines and petrol railbuses and had an unenviable record of unpunctuality. For most of its life it ran with no legality as a railway at all. Yet in its 38 years it became a much-loved institution that brought 'proper' public transport to the peninsula for the first time. After describing its origins, the author recounts the life of its engineer, Colonel Stephens, which explains much of the line's eccentricity.

Book Railway People

Download or read book Railway People written by George Turner Smith and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A railway is not just a collection of machines, rails and buildings – it is also about people. Railway People tells of the wayward Brontë brother Branwell, and his extraordinary but short lived career as a station master. It recounts some little known episodes in the lives of the great railway engineers, including one conceming Isambard Brunel, whose barmy army of navvies took part in the last pitched battle to be seen on British soil. There are tales drawn from the diaries of the first railway police, by turns humorous and gripping. Much relate to railway’s early days and describe the steep learning curve required of the world’s first railwaymen as they engage with the novel technology. By turn the stories are funny, tragic and often surprising. There is heroism in the mix; the heroism of men such as 16 year old John Hackworth who led an expedition in winter across the snowy wastes of Russia to deliver the country’s first steam locomotive to its purchaser, Tsar Nicholas I, fighting off packs of hungry wolves on the way. There are twenty stories in total and all highlight some aspect of the lives of railway people, with all their quirks, faults, mistakes, genius and enterprise. Much original research went into the production of these interesting, informative stories. Most of what appears was originally published in railway magazines such as Michael Blakemore’s Backtrack and some was also published in an earlier incamation of the book titled Those Railway People.

Book Colonel Stephens Light Railway Locomotives

Download or read book Colonel Stephens Light Railway Locomotives written by Brian Janes and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holman Fred Stephens (1868-1931) set himself up in the 1890s as an engineer and manager of the complete light railway as evolved by Victorian theorists to serve rural districts as yet bereft of the benefit of cheaper transport. To them, a light railway was not an assemblage of second-hand mainline equipment of dubious merit but of fit for purpose, new material. This ideal theory did not survive the near universal inability to raise sufficient capital to build and equip a light railway that would give a reasonable profit. Recourse was therefore made to the second-hand market. Stephens became a master at the art of building and running railways with the minimum of capital. The history of the mechanical performance of his railways was also nearly always handicapped with inadequate engineering facilities. This left staff struggling, often surprisingly successfully, with a menagerie of locomotive types. Limited standardisation was practised but most often expediency ruled. This gave rise to a glorious kaleidoscope of locomotives the history of each of which is outlined This variety was further colored by Stephens generally regarding a locomotive name as far more important than its number.

Book British railway enthusiasm

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ian Carter
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2017-10-03
  • ISBN : 1526129744
  • Pages : 329 pages

Download or read book British railway enthusiasm written by Ian Carter and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in paperback, this is the first academic book to study railway enthusiasts in Britain. Far from a trivial topic, the post-war train spotting craze swept most boys and some girls into a passion for railways, and for many, ignited a lifetime’s interest. British railway enthusiasm traces this post-war cohort, and those which followed, as they invigorated different sectors in the world of railway enthusiasm – train spotting, railway modelling, collecting railway relics – and then, in response to the demise of main line steam traction, Britain’s now-huge preserved railway industry. Today this industry finds itself riven by tensions between preserving a loved past which ever fewer people can remember and earning money from tourist visitors. The widespread and enduring significance of railway enthusiasm will ensure that this groundbreaking text remains a key work in transport studies, and will appeal to enthusiasts as much as to students and scholars of transport and cultural history.
