Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1980s the theme of God's self-revelation has been treated only briefly in Christian theology, at times simply ignored, and often confused with biblical inspiration. Revelation: Towards a Christian Theology of God's Self-Revelation lays out its basic characteristics, and begins by distinguishing between revelation in the primary sense (a living encounter with God's self-disclosure) and in the secondary sense (statements of faith derived from that encounter, or 'propositional' revelation). It considers revelation as transforming and informing, as being 'sacramental' or mediated through words and deeds, as communicated through an endless variety of means and mediators, as related to but distinct from biblical inspiration and truth, and as reaching those of 'other' faiths or of no faith at all. Gerald O'Collins skilfully distinguishes between past (or 'foundational') revelation, present (or 'dependent') revelation, and future (or 'eschatological') revelation. He expounds with ecumenical sensitivity the complex relationship between tradition and scripture. O'Collins moves into controversial areas by insisting that the divine self- revelation takes place only when received by human faith and that 'outside revelation there is no salvation (extra revelationem nulla salus'). This volume offers a coherent account of God's self-revelation, which can serve as a basis for all that follows in theology and for dialogue with those who follow 'other' living faiths or none at all. O'Collins extends and enriches what he has proposed in earlier books and articles about the characteristics of God's self-revelation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Self-Revelation of Jesus Christ: With an Examination of Some Naturalistic Hypotheses Some years ago the Author published a small volume entitled Pilates Question, 'Whence art Thou?' An Essay on the Personal claims asserted by Jesus Christ, and how to account for them. But he has long felt a desire to treat the subject more adequately, or, at least, less inadequately; and the present volume, in which some portions of the former volume are freely used, is an endeavour to realize that desire. The subject is of supreme importance. If the Prophet of Nazareth was what He professed to be, we are bound to receive Him with a faith that will actuate our whole spiritual nature and life. To do less is both an intellectual and a moral offence. If He was not what He professed to be, no zeal could be too burning to root out the idolatry of which His name has been the symbol and object for more than eighteen centuries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ...the more we are in the light, doing good works of mercy-corporal or spiritual-the more we become more like Jesus. But we know that, already, right? Do we, now? Have we greeted Jesus in prayer this morning when we awoke; asked Him how He felt throughout the day; acknowledged Him by saying "hello" to someone; have we thought, said, or did something kind for someone; did we thank Him for giving us another day to enjoy; have we ever thanked Him for creating us and sustaining us; have we ever looked in the mirror and said we see a miracle? Ah, if only there was more time in the day Perhaps we are rationalizing to the point of leading ourselves into darkness? What is it we fear that we have to live in darkness so much? Could it be the bright, shining, warm light at the end of the tunnel? For those of us who don't try to live in the light: You won't have to worry about being blinded or scorched by the bright, shining, warm light at the end of the tunnel Michael J. Lorenzo is an ordained permanent deacon, now inactive, in the Roman Catholic Christian Church. He was instructed by some of the foremost exegetes and theologians in the United States and around the world. He is currently writing a novel and a book of inspirational short stories. Michael now lives in NJ with his wife after spending two mind-expanding years in Brazil. He has one daughter who lives in upstate NY.

Book In His Own Words Jesus Self Revelation

Download or read book In His Own Words Jesus Self Revelation written by R. Stephen Lloyd and published by CrossBooks Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the centuries, the life, works, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ have polarized humankind. Some have hated Him, while others look to Him as the ultimate source of love. Author R. Stephen Lloyd, in his book, In His Own Words: Jesus' Self-Revelation, discusses the different ways Jesus was treated throughout His life. He was frequently the target of caustic sarcasm, vicious attacks, and unbridled hatred from those who opposed His message and ministry. Others did not see Him as evil or misguided but recognized Him as a good, well-intentioned man and possibly a prophet, carrying out God's directives. There are also the rare glimpses of individuals who recognized and acknowledged His oneness with God. Lloyd's study illustrates how, amid all the assumptions, Jesus revealed who He was--and is-- in a series of "I am" statements. No longer will you need to rely on human speculation and imagination to answer that question. Let the words of Jesus be the foundation. "Although Stephen and I come from different faith communities, I find his book to be a powerful answer to the question: 'Who is Jesus Christ?' If you want to know how the Saviour Himself answers that question, you should read this book."-- Kimball Fisher, author, former bishop, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
