Book For Self Examination and Judge for Yourselves

Download or read book For Self Examination and Judge for Yourselves written by Søren Kierkegaard and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Self-Examination and its companion piece Judge for Yourself! are the culmination of Soren Kierkegaard's "second authorship," which followed his Concluding Unscientific Postscript. Among the simplest and most readily comprehended of Kierkegaard's books, the two works are part of the signed direct communications, as distinguished from his earlier pseudonymous writings. The lucidity and pithiness and earnestness and power, of For Self-Examination and Judge for Yourself! are enhanced when, as Kierkegaard requested, they are read aloud. They contain the well-known passsages on Socrates' defense speech, how to read, the lover's letter, the royal coachman and the carriage team, and the painter's relation to his painting. The aim of awakening and inward deepening is signaled by the opening section on Socrates in For Self-Examination and is pursued in the context of the relations of Christian ideality, grace, and response. The secondary aim, a critique of the established order, links the works to the final polemical writings that appear later after a four-year period of silence. Originally published in 1944. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Self examination in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy

Download or read book Self examination in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy written by William F. Cornell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-examination in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy provides open and intimate accounts of the experience of being in psychotherapy. The internal life of the therapist is as much at the heart of the stories told as those of the clients. William F. Cornell here writes in a more personal and literary voice, avoiding as much as possible, the dense theoretical language that often typifies analytic writing. Central to the thesis elaborated in this book is that of how the therapist’s own personal history and unconscious motivations can deepen or distort the therapist’s understanding of the client. One chapter is devoted to the frank discussion of the author’s work with a client that was not only unhelpful but in fact harmful. Cornell emphasizes the capacity to call one’s self into question as a fundamental outcome of psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Attention is paid to the conscious and unconscious forces that create profound dynamic tensions between the enlivening desire for a fuller life and the defenses that deaden one’s capacity to think and to engage more fully in one’s life and relationships. The dynamics of transgenerational transmission of grief, loss, and trauma are also examined closely. The psychotherapist as person and professional, rather than the clients, is at the heart of this book. Self-examination in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy will appeal to all psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists who will find an exceptionally open discussion of the challenges, learning, and meanings of being a psychotherapist.

Book Self Examination

  • Release : 2022-01-28
  • ISBN : 1666736198

Download or read book Self Examination written by T. Hoogsteen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity, or what is called Christianity, conforms largely to Western humanism. Together and individually, believers draw the whole of the West into themselves, accommodating its dreams, loves, greeds, and hurts, as well as its indulgences, contradictions, perversions, and stupidities. All who identify corporately and personally as Christian commit themselves to this world conformity. The fMRI-like files in the first part of Self-Examination may please you, even polish your self-esteem. This whole system of pictures may displease you. But each analysis of the West scrutinizes all church people, the whole gazing, staring intensely back into you. This Self-Examination therefore is about dispassionate self-examination—you peering sharply and persistently into your Westernizing soul, daringly exposing its innermost workings. You thus see in yourselves all the errors of imperialism and racism, including injuries to minority people; these you will own, plus sharing in the responsibilities for mammonism. You thus will see your stewardship, or lack thereof, of the environment. Westerners please the powers of the age; to make yourselves look good, you justify yourselves in the presence of the Western gods and goddesses. By living the standards of the West, you are good for a purpose; you live and work to make your self-esteem glow, and thereby you please the current deities, and in this paradox you still identify as Christian.

Book Radical Depravity

  • Pages : 134 pages

Download or read book Radical Depravity written by John Owen and published by Felipe chavarro. This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ saves radically depraved men, women, and children from their sins. However, to understand, believe, and love the good news about the crucified and resurrected Savior, we must first understand our condition. Thus, we offer this issue of the Free Grace Broadcaster: Radical Depravity. Arthur Pink introduces us to this weighty subject by asking the question, “Is man a totally and thoroughly depraved creature by nature?” Thomas Reade then tells us about the deadly consequences and bitter fruits of Adam’s fall: in Adam all die. We then consider Joel Beeke’s helpful survey of the doctrine of human depravity. A second article by Thomas Reade leads us to a painful truth: the heart of man is evil. But he does not leave us there: he takes us to the blessed Son of God for deliverance. John Owen describes with great clarity the depraved and corrupted state of man’s mind and teaches us that the only remedy for this great darkness is the new birth: “You must be born again.” Loraine Boettner explains the extent and effects of original sin, which results in human inability in the matters of salvation. What is our true spiritual condition outside of Christ? Charles Spurgeon declares that we are legally, spiritually, and eternally dead. Nevertheless, he also tells us that we can be legally, spiritually, eternally alive by faith in Jesus Christ the Son! We then hear from John Flavel that in mercy, grace, and love, God draws sinners to Jesus Christ, gradually, suitably, powerfully, effectually, and finally. That is indeed good news! J. C. Ryle brings our subject to a close by asking a penetrating question: “Are you dead or alive?” Each of us, dear readers, must answer that question.

Book excerpt: The Apology of Socrates was written by Plato. In fact, it’s a defensive speech of Socrates that he said in a court noted down by Plato. The main subject of the speech is a problem of the evil. Socrates insists that neither death nor death sentence is evil. We shouldn’t be afraid of the death because we don’t know anything about it. Socrates proved that the death shouldn’t be taken as the evil with the following dilemma: the death is either a peace or a transit from this life to the next. Both can’t be called evil. Consequently, the death shouldn’t be treated as evil.
