Book The Selection of Seed Wheat Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Selection of Seed Wheat Classic Reprint written by George Wright Shaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Selection of Seed-Wheat In connection herewith it should be stated that the highest results can only be obtained when the seed is selected from pro ductive individual plants, and that under favorable conditions even small perfect seeds from productive plants may be better than large seeds from unproduc tive plants. The main influence of large grains selected by simple sieve grading. Will be in giving the plants a more Vigorous start in life, which of itself is of extreme importance. Other things being equal it is entirely fair to pre sume that the crops which are placed under the most. Favorable environment are going to give the best returns. It has been shown that, m general, the more vigor ous plants (that is, those having the largest spikelets) contain the larger grains, so that even: in selecting the grains by simple Sieve separation the bulk of the larger grains would come from the more vigorous plants, and thus there would be, in a measure at least, a selection from vigorous plants. Book Improving Wheats Selection Classic Reprint

Download or read book Improving Wheats Selection Classic Reprint written by N. A. Cobb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Improving Wheats Selection Any variety can be improved by careful and methodical selection. This method has been in vogue for many ages, and it is to it that we largely owe the gradual improvement that has taken place not only in wheat but in all cultivated plants. There is still plenty of room for improvement, however, and in the present chapter, we point out in particular not only the possibilities ahead, but give plain directions that will enable anyone so inclined to follow up our suggestions. All artificially obtained varieties tend to deteriorate as soon as the care which produced them is withheld, so that even if it were no longer possible to improve the wheat-plant by selection, it would still behove us to practise careful selection for the purpose of keeping up the quality we have already secured. While it is true that selection can be carried on in the field as ordinarily cultivated, and that this is the method anciently practised and one that is still in vogue, we strongly recommend the putting aside of specially selected and specially tilled land for the growth of plants from which to select. The first scarcely returns the cost of the investment while the latter yields a handsome profit. In order to attain such results, sow Henderson's Superior Seed Wheat, which is grown especially for seed purposes, from cross-bred, select pedigree strains of undoubted superiority. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Varieties, Properties, and Classification of Wheat This little w'ork On the Varieties, Properties, and Classification of Wheat, by John Le Couteur, Esq., Colonel of the let Regiment of Jersey Militia, and aide-de-camp to the King, 1836) should. Be in the possession of every cultivator of wheat. We do not regard itas exaggeration to say that it will do more for the agriculture of the empire than has been effected by all the societies instituted for the purposes of agricultural improvement put together. Colonel Le Couteur has struck into the right path, and not only has exhibited that care and discrimination which alone Can render the culture of wheat com pletely successful, but has pointed out the means by which all the Cerealia may be managed with the fullest benefit to the grov'ver and to the public. To our surprise he has dedicated his work to the Central Agricultural Association of Great Britain and Ireland - an Association evidently not brought together on the principles on which our author's experiments have been founded; but for the purpose of keeping up rent unjustly, and tampering with the currency to effect that end; deeming the filling of landlords' pockets at the expense of the tenantry a fit object for legislative interference. Our author is a member of the Association and it is astonishing that he should address it with adulation while its objects are purelyselfish, and his own to bring about amelioration in the only manner that is rational-via, by select ing and improving the best varieties of corn, and cultivating them in the most economical manner. Book Wheat Investigations Vol 1

Download or read book Wheat Investigations Vol 1 written by Jacob Zinn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wheat Investigations, Vol. 1: Pure Lines In 1915 several hundred wheat spikes were selected from commercial varieties representing the chief groups of hard red spring wheat. Of these selections 259 heads were retained and each grown in a row in the cereal crop nursery in 1916. In the following year 91 strains of the original selections were grown in one two-thousandth acre plots, along with 7 pure strains introduced from Minnesota. The crop from the one two thousandth acre plots furnished enough seed to make a chemi cal determination of the crude protein content of each strain. In 1918 only 44 pure lines selected from Aroostook wheats and 6 lines of Minnesota wheats were retained and grown in plots ranging from one two-hundredth to one-fortieth acre in area. A complete chemical analysis of the wheat and flour of 37 lines and a baking test of 31 lines were made in the spring of 1919. Under the same conditions of environment the pure lines of wheat showed distinct differences in the physical and chemi cal characteristics and in the bread making value or their grain. Book The Farmer s Guide Or a Treatise on the Improvement of Wheat

Download or read book The Farmer s Guide Or a Treatise on the Improvement of Wheat written by Thomas B. Lord and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farmer's Guide, or a Treatise on the Improvement of Wheat: Designed to Instruct the Farmer in Selecting His Seed, Increasing Its Fertility, Preventing Its Degenerating, or Restoring Its Former Vigor if It "Runs Out" The degeneracy of our soil and the best strength and fertility of our seed should admonish every farmer that something should be done to strengthen our Seed and Improve our Land! If I shall succeed in arousing the energies of the farmer to act on this subject, the importance of which is desirable, I shall feel that I have done something for the benefit of the tillers of the soil and for amelioration of the condition of our race, while I am called upon to pay the debt of nature. In Western New York, formerly one of the best wheat growing sections in the United States, when the soil was rich and the seed strong, Gen. Mills, of Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., raised 47 11-60 bushels of wheat per acre on 80 acres of land; Simon McKinzie, of Caledonia, same county, raised 50 bushels per acre; Capt. Scott, of Covington, Wyoming Co., raised 50 bushels per acre. True, these were extreme cases, but 30, 35 and 40 bushels per acre were not uncommon. Even at a later day, about 1850, Wm. Hotchkiss, of Lewiston, Niagara Co., raised 631/2 bushels per acre on 63/4 acres of land; Samuel L. Thompson, of Setauket. L. I., raised 42 bushels and 10 quarts by measure, or 44 bushels and 24 quarts by weight per acre; Justus White, of Parmelia, Jeff. Co., N. Y., raised 40 bushels and 2 pecks per acre. These were premium crops, but even much better crops were raised then than we get now. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Single Bath Hot Water and Stem Treatments of Seed Wheat for the Control of Loose Smut Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Single-Bath Hot-Water and Stem Treatments of Seed Wheat for the Control of Loose Smut Table 2 shows that by the single-bath method complete smut con trol was obtained by soaking the seed at 48° C. For 2 hours and for 2 hours and 30 minutes, and at 49° C. For 2 hours. Only very slight traces of smut were found when the seed was soaked at 49° C. For 1 hour and 30 minutes, and at 50° C. For 1 hour and 15 minutes. The summary of results obtained in 1920 - 21 indicates that the single-bath method can be used successfully to control loose smut with less injury to the seed than is caused by the modified hot-water treatment, as noted by Humphrey and Potter At 48° C. The optimum duration of treatment for the control of smut without seed Injury evidently lies between 1 hour and 30 minutes and 2 hours, and at 49° C. It is slightly above 1 hour and 30 minutes. At tempera tures above 49° C. Germination was considerably reduced, even when the seed was not soaked for a sufficient length of time to control the smut completely. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grain of Wheat If, on the other hand, we look to Europe and Asia to see in which countries these ancient cereals are still cultivated, we shall find them in the northern J ura, in the countries of the Basques, the Servians, the Swabians and the Bactrians of Persia. We see that these cereals have maintained themselves only in mountainous countries or among the peoples most remote from the centers of civilization. The culti vation of emmer has long since disappeared from the fertile plains of Egypt, where it was superseded by that of hard wheat. Knowing, therefore, that the wheats cultivated in most ancient times were those with a fragile rachis, we are' confronted by a second question: Where is the home of this type of wheat? In what country did our first parents, our prehistoric ancestors, find this plant, most precious of all plants?
