Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of the Plains of Abraham is one of the pivotal events in North American and global history. This clash between British General James Wolfe and French General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm on September 13, 1759, led to the British victory in the Seven Years’ War in North America, which in turn led to the creation of Canada and the United States as we know them today. Rooted in original research, featuring quotations and images that have never appeared before, Northern Armageddon immerses the reader in the campaign, battle and siege through the eyes of dozens of participants, such as British sailor William Hunter, four Quebec residents enduring the bombing of their city and a teenage Huron warrior. Shifting from perspective to perspective, we move from the bombardment of Quebec to the field of combat, where Montcalm and Wolfe gave their orders but thousands of individual soldiers determined the outcome of the battle. In the final chapters, D. Peter MacLeod traces the battle’s impact on Canada, the United States, both countries’ Aboriginals and the world, from 1759 into the twenty-first century.

Book The Battle for Quebec 1759

Download or read book The Battle for Quebec 1759 written by Matthew C Ward and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 13 September 1759, British and French forces fought one of the most decisive battles in history, on the Plains of Abraham outside the Canadian capital, Quebec. The British force decisively routed the French, seizing the city and, ultimately, all of Canada. But the struggle for Quebec was far more than one climactic battle: the campaign involved an immense military and naval operation, an eighteenth-century D-Day. Matthew Ward has researched extensively in archives in Britain and Canada to look at the entire campaign for Quebec, from its inception in Whitehall to its ultimate culmination in Montreal in 1760. He has probed beyond the actions of commanders and generals, to examine the experiences of the campaign for the ordinary soldier and civilian. What emerges is not just a picture of bravery and heroism, but also of a campaign which became increasingly brutal and cruel, both sides resorting to practices such as the routine scalping of enemy dead. It is also a surprising picture of the day-to-day, often mundane, lives of civilians and troops many thousands of miles from home.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Siege of Quebec and the Battle of the Plains of Abraham: A Reply to the Editor of Old and New Since the year 1898, few subjects have been more discussed in literary circles in this city than the Siege of Quebec, which culminated in the Battle of the Plains on the 13th. of September, 1759 Nearly everyone of our literary men has had something to say upon the question, and in my capacity of Librarian of the Legislature of this Province, I was frequently consulted upon some phase of the siege or of the battle. During the years 1899-1900, and the early part of 1901, when almost every foreign mail brought to Quebec correspondence or documents relating to the period, which were invariably submitted to me, I had unusual opportunities of becoming acquainted with new sources of information, and of appraising the value of the documents placed in my hands with the data with which I was already familiar. The matter which was thus presented to my notice would fill many large volumes. When the Siege of Quebec and the Battle of the Plains of Abraham was published in 1902, I was therefore in a measure cognizant with the selection of the documents which are published therein.
