This unpalatable explanation was conveyed to her by Sir William Douglas himself, and in course of the painful interview which ensued between the Queen and him in her apartment, the unhappy captive, overwhelmed by a sense of her utter helplessness, and realizing probably for the first time how little she had to expect from the tender mercies of her enemies, in a paroxysm of grief threw herself upon her knees in CHAPTER V the middle of her chamber near the table and wept long and bitterly.
