Book excerpt: The Little Blue Boat and the Secret of the Broads takes readers on an exciting journey in a race against time, through one of Britain’s most magical waterways. A boat owner makes a final voyage from Essex to the Broads to give his small yacht to his grandchildren, but he’s taken ill and the boat is left adrift at sea with just a small bear on board. The bear and boat have to make their way through the Norfolk waterways to find the children before they’re seized by the authorities, or worse, stolen by the infamous Pincher Pete. Helped by the mysterious Marsh Man and numerous local birds and animals, the story unfolds and reveals the hidden secret of the Broads. This reassuring, life-affirming adventure offers the reader an understanding of our waterways, and some of the wildlife that lives on, above, beside and beneath our rivers and lakes. It will inspire children and parents to do their own exploring and also learn about water safety and our fragile environment. The book includes a map showing where the action takes place so that readers can visit many of the locations. The beautiful illustrations show some of the birds and animals that readers may see on a visit to the Broads and other British wetlands. The tale, which has echoes of Swallows and Amazons and The Wind in the Willows, will appeal to children aged 6-11 years who enjoy adventure stories. It is a book that parents, grandparents and teachers, who want children to enjoy and learn about the great outdoors and understand the environment, have been waiting for.

Book excerpt: Whilst there have been many memoirs written by U-boat commanders of the Second World War, a book such as this, based upon the diaries of a senior Petty Officer telegraphist, written in 'real time' is something very special. Wolfgang Hirschfeld, whose diaries Geoffrey Brooks has translated is a born story teller. The principal chapters describe his experiences during six war patrols in U-109, in which he served as the senior telegraphist. His is a tale which covers the whole kaleidescope of emotions shared by men at war—a story of immense courage and fortitude, of remarkable comradeship born of the dangers, frustrations and privations shared and of transitory moments of triumph. Throughout runs a vein of humour, without which resistance to stress would have been virtually impossible. We get to know one of Germany's great U-boat aces, 'Ajax' Bleichrodt, holder of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and, in a special biographical appendix, learn how he finally cracked under the strain. The role of Admiral Karl Donitz, the dynamic commander of the U-boat service, so fascinatingly described by Hirschfeld, is of special interest—not least because even this dedicated Nazi had clearly realized by September, 1942, that the war was fast being lost. In 1944 Hirschfeld was promoted Warrant Officer and found himself on a large, schnorkel-equipped boat (U-234) heading for Japan with a load of high technology equipment and, in addition, a quantity of uranium ore. The possible significance of that uranium has been deeply researched by Geoffrey Brooks and is discussed in a second appendix.

Book Hemingway s Boat

Download or read book Hemingway s Boat written by Paul Hendrickson and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a National Book Critics Circle Award winner, a brilliantly conceived and illuminating reconsideration of a key period in the life of Ernest Hemingway that will forever change the way he is perceived and understood. Focusing on the years 1934 to 1961—from Hemingway’s pinnacle as the reigning monarch of American letters until his suicide—Paul Hendrickson traces the writer’s exultations and despair around the one constant in his life during this time: his beloved boat, Pilar. We follow him from Key West to Paris, to New York, Africa, Cuba, and finally Idaho, as he wrestles with his best angels and worst demons. Whenever he could, he returned to his beloved fishing cruiser, to exult in the sea, to fight the biggest fish he could find, to drink, to entertain celebrities and friends and seduce women, to be with his children. But as he began to succumb to the diseases of fame, we see that Pilar was also where he cursed his critics, saw marriages and friendships dissolve, and tried, in vain, to escape his increasingly diminished capacities. Generally thought of as a great writer and an unappealing human being, Hemingway emerges here in a far more benevolent light. Drawing on previously unpublished material, including interviews with Hemingway’s sons, Hendrickson shows that for all the writer’s boorishness, depression, and alcoholism, and despite his choleric anger, he was capable of remarkable generosity—to struggling writers, to lost souls, to the dying son of a friend. We see most poignantly his relationship with his youngest son, Gigi, a doctor who lived his adult life mostly as a cross-dresser, and died squalidly and alone in a Miami women’s jail. He was the son Hemingway forsook the least, yet the one who disappointed him the most, as Gigi acted out for nearly his whole life so many of the tortured, ambiguous tensions his father felt. Hendrickson’s bold and beautiful book strikingly makes the case that both men were braver than we know, struggling all their lives against the complicated, powerful emotions swirling around them. As Hendrickson writes, “Amid so much ruin, still the beauty.” Hemingway’s Boat is both stunningly original and deeply gripping, an invaluable contribution to our understanding of this great American writer, published fifty years after his death.
