Book excerpt: "Niels Bohr, Revised Edition" delves into the life and work of the founder of the modern atomic theory, highlighting his research on the atom and its structure, the subsequent development of the nuclear age, and his efforts to use his influence to promote peace. This revised edition offers new sidebars on subjects of interest, including the tools of physics, biographical profiles, and the recent play and film "Copenhagen," which has raised ethical concerns surrounding the relationship between science and society during wartime. Additionally, a new final chapter looks at string theory, the hypothesis that attempts to solve the universal paradoxes that have puzzled so many since Bohr's time.

  • Author : Joseph Almog
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

Download or read book Cogito written by Joseph Almog and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-21 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decartes' maxim Cogito, Ergo Sum (from his Meditations) is perhaps the most famous philosophical expression ever coined. Joseph Almog is a Descartes analyst whose last book WHAT AM I? focused on the second half of this expression, Sum--who is the "I" who is existing-and-thinking and how does this entity somehow incorporate both body and mind? This volume looks at the first half of the proposition--cogito. Almog calls this the "thinking man's paradox": how can there be, in the the natural world and as part and parcel of it, a creature that... thinks? Descartes' proposition declares that such a fact obtains and he maintains that it is self-evident; but as Almog points out, from the point of view of Descartes' own skepticism, it is far from obvious that there could be a thinking-man. How can it be that a thinking human be both part of the natural world and yet somehow distinct and separate from it? How did "thinking" arise in an otherwise "thoughtless" universe and what does it mean for beings like us to be thinkers? Almog goes back to the Meditations, and using Descartes' own aposteriori cognitive methodology--his naturalistic, scientific, approach to the study of man--tries to answer the question.

Book Photonic Technology and Industrial Policy

Download or read book Photonic Technology and Industrial Policy written by Ernest Sternberg and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolutionary technological development of the late twentieth century, photonics embraces lasers, fiber optics, imaging devices, and optical applications to computing. It affects the fortunes of numerous industries and, other than conventional microelectronics, may now be the leading arena for worldwide technological rivalry. While Japan has seen its photonic industries grow faster than any other high technology sector, the United States, where much of photonics originated, has experienced a declining industrial capability in world markets. Why is the U.S. floundering in this critical new technology? Are market solutions adequate as a national response to such massive technological change? After describing the history and economic implications of photonics, this book places these questions in the context of industrial policy debates about the proper role of government in response to strategic industrial sectors. The author then assesses the U.S. public policy response by examining various government programs directed at photonics. These programs add up to an implicit government photonics policy, but one that is shortsighted, incoherent, and unplanned. Sternberg concludes that it is this failure to plan that explains United States' retrogression in a critical technology.

Book The Hidden Life in Freemasonry

Download or read book The Hidden Life in Freemasonry written by C. W. Leadbeater and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE Masonic fellowship differs from all other societies in that candidates for membership have to join it blindfold, and cannot receive much information about it until they actually enter its ranks. Even then the majority of Masons usually obtain only the most general idea of the meaning of its ceremonies, and seldom penetrate further than an elementary moral interpretation of its principal symbols. In this book it is the object, while preserving due secrecy upon those matters which must be kept secret, to explain something of the deeper meaning and purpose of Freemasonry, in the hope of arousing among the Brn. a more profound reverence for that of which they are the custodians and a fuller understanding of the mysteries of the Craft. Although the book is primarily intended for the instruction of members of the Co-Masonic Order, whose desire, as is expressed in their ritual, is to pour the waters of esoteric knowledge into the Masonic vessels, the author hopes nevertheless that it may appeal to a wider circle, and may perhaps be of use to some of those many Brn. in the masculine Craft who are seeking for a deeper interpretation of Masonic symbolism than is given in the majority of their Lodges, showing them that in the ritual which they know and love so well are enshrined splendid ideals and deep spiritual teachings which are of the most absorbing interest to the student of the inner side of life.

Book The Collection of Essays on the Issue of Consciousness and High Negative Entropy

Download or read book The Collection of Essays on the Issue of Consciousness and High Negative Entropy written by Ming Wong and published by Scientific Research Publishing, Inc. USA. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 799 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tries hard to answer some question of life and the phenomena of consciousness; indeed, it answers some questions, but it raises more questions. Thus, for this book, it is just a wakeup call, awaking people that there is a huge hidden theoretical space behind physics; for this hidden space, there are a lot of investigations which are needed to be done. Particularly, I hope this book could remind people: other than the crystal world which is governed by physical rule; there is the non-crystal world which is governed by order of nature (negative entropy, advance thermodynamics). Here, for the brain science, for the bio-medical research, the research work is faced serious challenge; people are searching for new direction. The approach of (QM/AT) could provide the new imagination for such search.
