Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you do when everything in your life just feels wrong? Elise Leroux seems to have it all; a glittering pop career and a cabinet full of awards, not to mention her hot pop-star boyfriend, Silas. But it's not all that it seems – the songs chosen by her management are cheesy and as for Silas, well, that is nothing more than a "showmance", encouraged by their shared management. Despite her frustration at the lack of input she is allowed into her career, Elise is not looking forward to an enforced break between touring and starting her new album and is even less thrilled when her manager suggests that she return to Louisiana to get in touch with her Cajun roots. The last time she was home, she wasn't exactly made to feel welcome in town. And then there is Avery. A past love, not yet forgotten, how will she respond when she finally sees him again? SNEAK PEEK! "Elise Leroux? Is that really you?" "Avery?" I gasped. Boy has he grown up! I tried not to stare. "You deign us with your presence?" He laughed, reaching for his jeans after he’d toweled off most of the mud. I’d seen him do this a thousand times, but he’d been a boy back then. "Don’t be mean; you know I love this place!" I said playfully, encouraged by his lighthearted tone. "Come on over, I’ve got a load of grass ready for Léoma. I should have been back a month ago, I’m sure she’s out by now." "Not quite." I poled over to the dock where his pirogue was loaded with the kind of grass you could only find deep in the bayou. He’d been working hard all day. "I feel bad you’ve been doin’ this for gran all these years," I said as I joined him on solid ground, trying not to stare at the hard muscled chest of a man I hardly recognized, but he seemed so familiar at the same time. "I just assumed she got her swamp grass from ole Mr. Thibodaux." "She does from time to time, but I don’t mind helpin’ her out." "So what brings you home?" He asked, clearly avoiding my gaze as he tied the last bundle of grass and hefted it into the boat. His jaw was clenched almost like he was intimidated and didn’t know how to act around me. I’d seen that look often enough with the people who worked for me and I did not want to see it on Avery’s face. "Oh taking a much needed break from my life as a performing seal," I said with a huge sigh, hoping to ease the tension I felt between us. He burst out laughing, and I saw a bit of the old Avery return. "I’ve often wondered if you saw it, or if you were so blinded by the glitz and the glam that you didn’t realize it." "What that I’m a pop-princess-puppet, dancing to the strings my managers wield? Yeah, I see it, I’ve always seen it Avery - I’ve just always hoped it would lead to something more me." "And has it?" He asked, easing his pirogue back into the water, linking it with mine, and securing both to the dock. "I don’t know who I am anymore, so no, I suppose not." It was odd how quickly we slipped back into our old ways of brutal honesty. I had always been able to count on Avery to tell me the truth. It was part of what hurt us the most when we parted ways; we’d been too honest, and hurtful, with one another... free, freebie, new adult, contemporary romance, steamy romance, pop romance

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Avery now lost somewhere in Indonesia, not Malaysia as Elise had thought, the situation seems desperate. There's no way she is going to just sit at home waiting uselessly for news. Using every method available to her Elise is determined that she in Gwen will have to find him themselves, despite the devastation... SNEAK PEEK! She wasn’t kidding, the roads through the mountains were treacherous and we couldn’t travel nearly as fast as I wanted to. In light of the disaster, there was a lot of traffic to contend with and we had to take many detours to avoid roadblocks. There were several times I thought Umi would never get her big truck through the narrow roads that weren’t much better than paths, but she always managed, until we reached Sibolga and a few hours past the small city, we could go no further by vehicle. The entire area was flooded for miles and there was no other choice but to continue on foot. “How many days to Padang from here?” I asked as we divvied up the supplies among our various packs. “In good condition, three days.” Umi shrugged. “Could take much longer.” “We’ll be fine,” Gwen insisted. “I can’t help but think it’s a dumb idea for three women to go trekking across the mountains on their own.” I turned to find them both scowling at me. “Not that we can’t take care of ourselves,” I amended quickly, “it just may invite unwanted trouble.” “Shotgun make good deterrent,” Umi said, slinging the gun over her shoulder, handing Gwen a set of handguns. “Where’s mine?” “She won’t shoot self?” “I usually find it best not to underestimate her,” Gwen muttered. “I’ll take the big ass knife,” I insisted, sheathing it at my waist. The first night we slept on the cold damp ground, I wondered if I’d bitten off more than I could chew. I was so occupied with getting to Padang, I still hadn’t thought about what I’d do once I got there. I stared up at the stars and made my plans while the others slept. I finally fell asleep as the sky began to lighten and I woke feeling sore and exhausted, but eager to get one day closer to Avery. “Let me check for messages and we’ll go,” I said as Gwen and Umi barked orders at each other. I couldn’t quite tell if they hated each other or were genuinely fond of each other but I chose to stay out of the line of fire. I never got to check my messages because the ground started to shake. Umi quickly had us all huddled up against the mountainside as rock and boulder crashed around us. “Ahh!” I heard Gwen cry as the earthquake began to subside. “Gwen?” “I’m fine, just got smacked in the head.” Blood oozed from a small gash and I tended it as best as I could. “Just little quake, we go,” Umi insisted. “Little quake?” I shuddered. We spent the afternoon climbing over rocks and trees that covered the road. We were moving even slower now and I feared we’d never get there. “What kind of damage did that ‘small quake’ cause in Padang?” Gwen murmured softly. “My fear exactly...” new adult, contemporary romance, pop music romance

Book excerpt: With Avery and Gwen covering the developing crisis in Malaysia, Elise has no option but to push forward with her plans. Overseeing the construction of her recording studio and writing new music keeps her busy, but it is still difficult to keep Avery from her mind. Sure, he keeps texting when he can and in her head she knows that he is an experienced professional, but how safe can he possibly be? SNEAK PEEK! “Ave!” I nearly shouted into the phone. “Sorry Elise, it’s Max,” he said apologetically. “I’m on my way out to the bayou, you need to give an interview about all this.” “What?” I sat up in bed, realizing I hadn’t ever gotten around to taking a shower yesterday. I was a mess; the last thing I needed to deal with was my career or my nosey fans. “The press has still been buzzing about you and Avery. You successfully managed to get your fans behind your new relationship and they are worried about him and what his absence is doing to you. A picture of Avery at the press conference was all over the gossip sites yesterday and everyone is chomping at the bit for a word from you.” “You’ve got to be kidding me.” I rolled my eyes, flopping back against the pillows. “I know you must be a wreck, but it will be good PR for the fans to see you like this.” “Have you ever had a heart Max? Or did your mother manage to give birth to you without one?” “You know it’s true Elise. Even in the darkest moments of your life, you’ll never have total privacy.” “Do you even care to hear about Avery?” I squinted my eyes against another onset of tears. “Of course, I just assumed you hadn’t heard anything.” “We have a system, he tries to at least text me every six hours. I just heard from him a few hours ago. He’s alive, that much I know...”

Book excerpt: When Sky Sanders is unceremoniously fired from her dream job in an art gallery she is worried. It's hard enough for new graduates to get a paying job in the art world. So when the opportunity arises to work with a world-class private collection she jumps at the chance. Her new boss is the famously reclusive ex-teen movie heartthrob Joshua Davis. While Sky is open and enthusiastic, Josh is private and intense. In fact, Sky thinks that sometimes he seems to enjoy making her feel uncomfortable. But he does have an art collection the equal of any gallery she has ever been in, plus there is something else that stirs her curiosity. A secret room. A locked room that she absolutely must not enter no matter how crazy it makes her... SNEAK PEEK! "Do you realize that had I not cleared my throat to get your attention, I could still be standing here, watching you, and you would have no idea?" "Um," Sky shifted, unsure of what to say. What, exactly, was he trying to tell her? "I didn’t realize you’d been watching me." He rolled his eyes. "I wasn’t. But I could have been. And you would’ve been off in lala land, thinking about Miriam Deschamps. I guess I’m just trying to give you a little advice." "What, sleep with one eye open?" Sky asked jokingly. "I’m not talking about sleeping," he replied, not even a hint of a smile appearing on his face. You’re kind of a jerk, she thought, realizing, all of a sudden, that her boss most likely fell into the category of exceedingly good-looking but ultimately a gigantic asshole. "So let me get this straight," she said. "You’re telling me that even if there’s something I find very interesting, something that I get excited about, I should not let myself get too excited because some guy might come into the room without me realizing and start watching me?" "If you want to take what I’m saying to you in the absolute most literal sense, then, yes. But what I’m really trying to tell you is that you should try to be aware, regardless of how excited, as you put it, about something you might get. Self-control and self-awareness are two things you should never underestimate." "Okay, great," Sky said. "Thanks for the advice." She picked the camera back up. "I should probably get back to work. But not before I tell you that I’m very aware of you standing there. Better?" Now a slightly amused smile did touch the corners of his mouth. Stop being so damn good-looking! She wanted to scream at him. Instead, she turned away. "You’re sassy, you know. And you’re also young. I’m just trying to offer you a little advice, is all. Things I wish that people had shared with me when I’d been your age." "Well, thanks, but I’m actually okay with doing things how I do them." He nodded. "Fair enough. I’ll leave you to it, then." And then he turned and was gone. Sky stood there for a moment, camera in hand, wondering what had just happened. Was he trying to tell her he wasn’t happy with the way she was doing things? That would be impossible, wouldn’t it? He had barely been in the room long enough to see anything, except that she was totally engrossed in what she was doing, which, she thought, would be a good quality for an employee to have. She felt a funny swirling sensation in her stomach. That awkward interaction with him, plus his secret room, suddenly had her wondering if this really was such a dream job after all... new adult, contemporary romance, art romance

Book excerpt: Christopher Nolan’s caped crusader trilogy—Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises—is considered by many to be one of the finest translations of comic book characters to the big screen. The second film in the series, The Dark Knight, was both a critical and commercial success, featuring an Oscar-winning performance by Heath Ledger as the Joker. The score—by Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer and eight-time Oscar nominee James Newton Howard—also received accolades, including a Grammy. In Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard’s The Dark Knight: A Film Score Guide, Vasco Hexel delves into the composers’ backgrounds to reveal the many facets of meaning in the highs and lows of the score. This book also highlights the working methods of Zimmer and Howard and how they collaborated with each other and the filmmaking team to create such a memorable soundtrack. By drawing on unprecedented access to some of the key creators of the film, the author provides unique insights into the score’s composition. Through close examination of Schubert’s use of technical and structural devices, Brian Newbould demonstrates that Schubert was much more technically innovative than has been supposed, and argues that the composer’s technical discoveries constitute a rich legacy of specific influences on later composers. Providing rich new insights into the creative practice of one of the major figures of classical music, this two-volume study reframes our understanding of Schubert as an innovator who constantly pushed at the frontiers of style and expression.
