Book Bible and Poverty in Kenya

Download or read book Bible and Poverty in Kenya written by Maurice Matendechere Sakwa and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-02-28 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many strategies have been formulated to reduce poverty, the most recent being the need to include the poor as co-agents in the development process. Culture, understood as commonly shared values, then becomes an important element in poverty alleviation. Likewise religion becomes an important element of culture when the values of that religion are considered as widespread in the society. Additionally, political and economic factors are equally important for poverty alleviation. This work is centered on a conceptual model postulating that cultural attitudes influence attitudes towards ends of poverty alleviation directly and indirectly through political and economic attitudes. The study maps out the paths of influence of cultural (religious values), political and economic attitudes on those towards ends of poverty alleviation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This is surely the most impressive and important publication to come out of the UN system for many years.' Peter Adamson, founder, New Internationalist, and author and researcher of UNICEF's The State of the World's Children from 1980 to 1995 The world's governments agreed at the Millennium Summit to halve, by 2015, the number of people who lack access to safe water. With rapidly growing urban populations the challenge is immense. Water and Sanitation in the World's Cities is a comprehensive and authoritative assessment of the problems and how they can be addressed. This influential publication by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) sets out in detail the scale of inadequate provision of water and sanitation. It describes the impacts on health and economic performance, showing the potential gains of remedial action; it analyses the proximate and underlying causes of poor provision and identifies information gaps affecting resource allocation; it outlines the consequences of further deterioration; and it explains how resources and institutional capacities - public, private and community - can be used to deliver proper services through integrated water resource management.

Book Can the Poor Influence Policy

Download or read book Can the Poor Influence Policy written by Caroline M. Robb and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participatory Poverty Assessments (PPAs) use participatory research methods to understand poverty from the perspective of the poor by focusing on their realities, needs, and priorities. The principle of a PPA is to ensure that the intended beneficiaries have some control over the research process. Communities share their knowledge and are involved in analyzing the results. This book proposes a threefold classification of PPAs based on their varying impacts: 1) deepening our understanding of poverty; 2) influencing policy; and 3) strengthening policy implementation. There is no single model for PPAs. However, this book suggests some minimum standards and good practice for participatory policy research that aims to affect policy change. PPAs are highlighting the potentially powerful role the poor can play in analyzing poverty, developing interventions for its reduction, and assessing the impact of projects and policies. The challenge for the Bank and the rest of the development community is to effectively integrate the perspectives and values of the poor into the process of policy and project formulation and implementation.
