Book excerpt: Axions are peculiar hypothetical particles that could both solve the CP problem of quantum chromodynamics and at the same time account for the dark matter of the universe. Based on a series of lectures by world experts in this field held at CERN (Geneva), this volume provides a pedagogical introduction to the theory, cosmology and astrophysics of these fascinating particles and gives an up-to-date account of the status and prospect of ongoing and planned experimental searches.

Book Axion Dark Matter Searches

Download or read book Axion Dark Matter Searches written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report nearly all astrophysical and cosmological data point convincingly to a large component of cold dark matter in the Universe. The axion particle, first theorized as a solution to the strong charge-parity problem of quantum chromodynamics, has been established as a prominent CDM candidate. Cosmic observation and particle physics experiments have bracketed the unknown mass of the axion between approximately a [mu]eV and a meV. The Axion Dark Matter eXperiement (ADMX) has successfully completed searches between 1.9 and 3.7 [mu]eV down to the KSVZ photon-coupling limit. ADMX and the Axion Dark Matter eXperiement High-Frequency (ADMX-HF) will search for axions at weaker coupling and/or higher frequencies within the next few years. Status of the experiments, current research and development, and projected mass-coupling exclusion limits are presented.

Book excerpt: The nature of dark matter has been a mystery for over 70 years. One plausible candidate is the axion, an extremely light and weakly interacting particle, which results from the Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong CP problem. In this proceedings I will briefly review the evidence for dark matter as well as the motivation for the existence of the axion as a prime dark matter candidate. I will then discuss the experimental methods to search for axion dark matter focusing on a sensitive cavity experiment (ADMX) being run at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Book Extended Search for Axion Dark Matter with ADMX

Download or read book Extended Search for Axion Dark Matter with ADMX written by Nick Chong Du and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The axion is a hypothetical elementary particle that came out of a solution to the Strong-CP problem in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The properties of the axion also make it a highly compelling candidate for dark matter. Axion haloscopes are instruments that search for axion dark matter in the local Milky Way halo by searching for the conversion of an axion into photons via the inverse Primakoff effect. The Axion Dark Matter eXperiment (ADMX) is by far the most sensitive axion haloscope, being the first to exclude benchmark models for the QCD axion and continuing to take data at high sensitivity. This thesis reports on a run by ADMX which excluded dark matter axions in the galactic halo over the mass range 2.81--3.31[mu]eV. This unprecedented sensitivity in this mass range is achieved by deploying an ultra low-noise Josephson parametric amplifier as the first-stage signal amplifier.

Book The Search for Ultralight Bosonic Dark Matter

Download or read book The Search for Ultralight Bosonic Dark Matter written by Derek F. Jackson Kimball and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-28 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A host of astrophysical measurements suggest that most of the matter in the Universe is an invisible, nonluminous substance that physicists call “dark matter.” Understanding the nature of dark matter is one of the greatest challenges of modern physics and is of paramount importance to our theories of cosmology and particle physics. This text explores one of the leading hypotheses to explain dark matter: that it consists of ultralight bosons forming an oscillating field that feebly interacts with light and matter. Many new experiments have emerged over the last decade to test this hypothesis, involving state-of-the-art microwave cavities, precision nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, dark matter “radios,” and synchronized global networks of atomic clocks, magnetometers, and interferometers. The editors have gathered leading experts from around the world to present the theories motivating these searches, evidence about dark matter from astrophysics, and the diverse experimental techniques employed in searches for ultralight bosonic dark matter. The text provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to this blossoming field of research for advanced undergraduates, beginning graduate students, or anyone new to the field, with tutorials and solved problems in every chapter. The multifaceted nature of the research – combining ideas and methods from atomic, molecular, and optical physics, nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, electrical engineering, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology – makes this introductory approach attractive for beginning researchers as well as members of the broader scientific community. This is an open access book.

Book Second generation Dark matter Axion Search

Download or read book Second generation Dark matter Axion Search written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project is a collaboration with the axion search experiment at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The axion is a particle that affects two important issues in particle physics and astrophysics: the origin of CP symmetry in the strong interactions, and the composition of the dark-matter of the universe. First predicted in 1978, present laboratory, astrophysical, and cosmological constraints suggest axions have a mass in the 1 [mu]eV-1 meV range. Axions are especially significant as dark matter if their mass is in the range 1-10 [mu]eV. These dark matter axions may be detected by their coupling to photons through the E - B interaction in a tunable high-Q microwave cavity permeated by a strong external magnetic field. The present experiment is the first cavity experiment with the sensitivity to possibly observe cosmic axions. It has recently begun taking data and will operate for the next several years. The University of Florida plans to contribute to the operation of this detector and to the design and prototyping of cavities for the experiment.

Book Dark Galaxies and Lost Baryons IAU S244

Download or read book Dark Galaxies and Lost Baryons IAU S244 written by Jonathan I. Davies and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-05-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past century astronomers have discovered huge numbers of galaxies within our Universe by detecting the light from the stars they are made of. Now some astronomers believe that there are many other undetected galaxies that do not contain stars. IAU Symposium 244 saw heated debates surrounding the existence of these Dark Galaxies, discussing what a Dark Galaxy is and whether detections satisfy requirements for what one might be. Other contributions describe candidate Dark Galaxies, the baryon content of the Universe, and the discovery of the warm inter-galactic medium and low luminosity galaxies. Highlights include state-of-the-art observations of atomic hydrogen in the Universe that may be used to find Dark Galaxies, how gravitational lensing may be used to map the distribution of matter and inferences of dark structures, and the role of low luminosity galaxies in the formation of larger galaxies.

Book Connecting Quarks with the Cosmos

Download or read book Connecting Quarks with the Cosmos written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-03-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances made by physicists in understanding matter, space, and time and by astronomers in understanding the universe as a whole have closely intertwined the question being asked about the universe at its two extremesâ€"the very large and the very small. This report identifies 11 key questions that have a good chance to be answered in the next decade. It urges that a new research strategy be created that brings to bear the techniques of both astronomy and sub-atomic physics in a cross-disciplinary way to address these questions. The report presents seven recommendations to facilitate the necessary research and development coordination. These recommendations identify key priorities for future scientific projects critical for realizing these scientific opportunities.

Book A Piezoelectrically Tuned RF cavity Search for Dark Matter Axions

Download or read book A Piezoelectrically Tuned RF cavity Search for Dark Matter Axions written by Christian Boutan and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Axion is a well motivated hypothetical elementary particle that must exist in nature if the strong CP problem of QCD is explained by the spontaneous breaking of a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. Not only would the discovery of the axion solve deep issues in QCD, an axion with a mass of [mu]eV - meV could account for most or all of the missing mass in our galaxy and finally reveal the composition of dark matter. The Axion Dark Matter experiment (ADMX) seeks to resolve these two critical problems in physics by looking for the resonant conversion of dark-matter axions to microwave photons in a strong magnetic field. Utilizing state of the art electronics and dilution refrigerator cryogenics, ADMX is the world's leading haloscope search for axions - able to discover or rule out even the most pessimistically coupled QCD axions. With multi-TM0N0 functionality and with the commissioning of the new high-frequency Sidecar experiment, ADMX is also sensitive to a wide range of plausible axion masses. Here I motivate axions as ideal dark matter candidates, review techniques for detecting them and give a detailed description of the ADMX experiment. I discuss my contributions to the construction of the ADMX dual-channel receiver, which is the most sensitive microwave receiver on earth. I discuss the data acquisition, data taking and real-time analysis software. The primary focus of this work, however, is the ADMX Sidecar experiment which is a miniature axion haloscope that fits inside of the ADMX insert and has the capability of searching for axion masses between 16[mu]eV - 24[mu]eV on the TM010 and 26.4 - 30[mu]eV on the TM020 mode. I discuss analysis of the Sidecar data and exclude axion-to-two-photon coupling g[alpha] [gamma] [gamma]

Book Proposal for Axion Dark Matter Detection Using an math Display

Download or read book Proposal for Axion Dark Matter Detection Using an math Display written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, we show that dark matter axions cause an oscillating electric current to flow along magnetic field lines. The oscillating current induced in a strong magnetic field B→ 0 produces a small magnetic field B→ a. We propose to amplify and detect B→ a using a cooled LC circuit and a very sensitive magnetometer. This appears to be a suitable approach to searching for axion dark matter in the 10-7 to 10-9 eV mass range.

Book The Dark Matter Radio

Download or read book The Dark Matter Radio written by Saptarshi Chaudhuri and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation introduces the Dark Matter (DM) Radio, a tunable, lumped-LC oscillator search for axion and hidden-photon dark matter between 1 peV and 1 ueV. The design of DM Radio is motivated from fundamental statements regarding impedance-matching to dark matter and optimal electromagnetic searches for axions and hidden photons subject to the Standard Quantum Limit (SQL) on phase-insensitive amplification. I describe the DM Radio Pathfinder, a prototype detector searching for hidden-photon dark matter between 400 peV and 40 neV. First data from the Pathfinder are presented. I propose the Radio-Frequency Quantum Upconverter (RQU), a device which enables DM Radio readout sensitivity beyond the SQL. The ultimate vision for DM Radio, a cubic-meter-volume resonant experiment operating at 10 mK with a 4 Tesla DC magnetic field and exploiting quantum metrology, is presented. This experiment will enable a probe of the QCD axion between 4 neV and 1 ueV.
