Arranged in case number order and complete with index. The Royal Humane Society awards were given for acts of gallantry all over the world and the citations listed in this work are a fitting tribute to both the recipients and the Royal Humane Society. They cover the period of the two world wars and the Boer War. Through the citations can be seen the progression of transport from the horse to modern day transport, the emancipation of women, the changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution, and indeed Living History. This book continues the work of Lambton Young C.E., Acts of Gallantry, which covers the years 1830 to 1871. The complementary Volume I, by Lambton Young, C.E., has been reprinted. It covers the period 1830 to 1871 and gives citations for which gold and silver medals and clasps were given by the Royal Humane Society stating in the preface:- "amongst these there are acts of heroism , which, had they been performed by a soldier or sailor in the execution of his duty, in the face of the enemy, could not have failed earning the highest distinction that is awarded; how much more then should such deeds be commended, when it is borne in mind that the individuals who risk their lives in these noble acts do so simply through the promptings of a generous heart, wishing to aid their fellow creatures in distress, without any prospect of reward or promotion?"

Book A Pocket Guide to British Gallantry Awards

Download or read book A Pocket Guide to British Gallantry Awards written by Peter Duckers and published by Spink Books. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the ages and in all societies, gallantry in battle has been highly regarded, with the bravery of individuals and fighting forces being officially rewarded and publically recognised in a wide variety of ways, such as gifts of jewels or money, grants of land, promotions in rank or status etc. In Britain, it has been the practice since at least the mid-19C to award decorations - medals specifically conferred to reward bravery in action. With the growth of the British Empire in the late 19C, the waging of two World Wars, the campaigns that mark the end of Empire and a continuing UN and NATO role, Britain has produced a wide range of medals to reflect the gallantry of its own and Imperial fighting forces. Such rewards have been conferred upon men and women, in all theatres of war and amongst the whole range of its forces on the ground, in and under the sea, in the air and even "at home". This new Spink book offers an introductory guide to British and Imperial medals for gallantry which have appeared since 1854 and which continue to be awarded to this day, illustrating the type of action which has led to the award of the various medals over nearly 200 years.

Book Sailors Behind the Medals

Download or read book Sailors Behind the Medals written by Chris Bilham and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-three riveting true stories of the heroic acts that earned WWII Royal Navy sailors their awards for gallantry.Includes photos. The story of the Royal Navy in the Second World War is an epic, consisting of both dramatic battles such as the River Plate and Matapan, and drawn-out campaigns such as the escort of convoys to Malta and northern Russia. Sailors Behind the Medals examines the careers of twenty-three sailors whose part in these actions resulted in the award of their medals. The author illustrates a cross-section of the wartime navy: long-service regulars, volunteers, recalled veterans of the Great War, Hostilities Only ratings. They served on nearly every kind of warship and in all the main theaters of the war, and their individual acts of gallantry under extreme conditions make for inspiring reading. Also included is an examination of the medals that were awarded for gallantry.

Book excerpt: The dedication of this book will jolt the memories of those old enough to remember 60 years back: it is to the crew of HM Submarine Thetis which sank with a loss of ninety-nine lives during acceptance trials in Liverpool Bay on 1st June 1939. In this book the authors set out to summarize the existing practice of the State and of public and other bodies in this or other countries in rewarding acts of gallantry whether in peace or in war. It is interesting that in discussing British gallantry awards they make a case for a Conspicuous Gallantry Cross to replace the DSC, MC and DFC as an award for officers of the three Services; this award was actually instituted in 1995, but for all ranks of all three Services, the first going to a corporal in Bosnia in May 1995. After discussing the various military and civil gallantry awards the rest of the book, some 300 pages, is taken up, with lists of recipients - with full citations - of the Albert Medal; the Edward Medal; Empire Gallantry, Medal Military and Civil Divisions; Albert Medal for Sea Service (Admiralty awards) and Civilian Sea Service (Board of Trade awards); and Life Saving gallantry awards - all these from the first awards to the end of 1938.

Book For Conspicuous Gallantry

Download or read book For Conspicuous Gallantry written by Phil McDermott and published by . This book was released on 2001-08-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (CGM) was instituted in 1855 as the naval counterpart of the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) which had been introduced the year before, but for which men of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines were not eligible. Both pre-dated the VC (1856). Thus, until the appearance of the CGM there was no way of recognising gallant and distinguished service by sailors and marines. The initial medal was the Royal Marine Meritorious Service Medal but with the words For Meritorious Service on the reverse altered to read For Conspicuous Gallantry. Twelve of these original medals were awarded to eleven recipients; Able Seaman D.Barry received two. After the Crimea the medal fell into disuse. It was revived for the Ashantee War of 1873-1874 and subsequent wars and campaigns. In 1921 the ribbon was changed from three equal stripes blue, white, blue to white with dark blue edges to avoid any confusion with the DSC which also had the same three stripes though with a darker blue. In 1942 came the final change in the CGM s history when eligibility was extended to Army and RAF personnel for gallantry whilst flying in active operations against the enemy, this in addition to the Distinguished Flying Medal. The CGM(Flying) medal remained the same but with a different ribbon of light blue with dark blue edges. In 1995 the DCM and both the CGMs were replaced by the new Conspicuous Gallantry Cross. This book is in two sections: the CGM and the CGM(Flying) with the names of recipients of each medal arranged in alphabetical order along with any citations.

Book excerpt: Published to coincide with the 105th anniversary of the most important sea battle of World War I, this comprehensive catalogue lists all orders, decorations and MIDs awarded for the Battle of Jutland, grouped according to the ships, with citations where available, and a description of the ship and her role in the battle. The Battle of Jutland was the only action between the battle fleets of the UK and Germany; 151 British ships, with a total of about 60,000 sailors, took part. Of these, 13 ships were sunk and over 6,000 British sailors were killed. Over 2,000 honours were awarded, including four Victoria Crosses, 47 DSOs, over 200 DSMs and other decorations, and MIDs were awarded for gallantry and distinguished service. Awards from France and Russia are also included. The VCs are well documented but, with regard to most of the other awards, it is difficult or impossible to identify the ship in which the man was serving. This book will therefore be of great interest to medal collectors, when reading the citation for an award, to know the ship referred to, and to find how many awards were made to each ship, in addition to giving a fascinating background to his most iconic of naval battles.

Download or read book 21st Century Courage written by Mark Felton and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2011-02-23 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines examples of outstanding courage exhibited by people living in modern Britain. These include British servicemen and servicewomen serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, police officers, and ordinary civilians in Britain and around the world. All of the cases cited have been awarded gallantry medals by the British government since 2000.The purpose of the book is to inspire modern British people. In the past, the heroes of Empire were well-known and respected, but since the Second World War people have tended to associate heroism with celebrity instead. We hear footballers and actors described as heroes, and this demeans the word, and the real heroes of modern British society. The generations that fought the First and Second World Wars have often been held up as the greatest generations of British people. This book shows Britons that the kind of grit, determination, courage and willingness to have a go exhibited by previous generations are as alive now as they ever were, and heroes can come from all walks of life and all ethnic groups in modern Britain.
