Book excerpt: SEA BITCH is a collection of four short stories by the acclaimed nautical writer Christine Kling. The women and girls who sail these waters might appear somewhat innocent, but all turn deadly dangerous before these tales are done. Look out guys, if there is one theme among these pages, it is that revenge is sweet. The first story "The Night Watchman" is the original story wherein Christine created Seychelle Sullivan, the tug and salvage captain who went on to appear in her first four books, and serves as a prequel to the series. "Dead Storage" first appeared in the popular collection Miami Noir published by Akashic Books. The collection concludes with bonus excerpts from Christine's new thriller CIRCLE OF BONES and from the first in her Seychelle Sullivan series titled SURFACE TENSION Praise for Christine Kling: "Ms. Kling is a rising queen in the suspense genre." – Midwest Book Review "[Kling] brings authority and authenticity to her novels, putting into lively focus the characteristics and personalities of the colorful people who make a living on the water." – The Miami Herald "Kling not only makes her readers curious – she sweeps them into the crosscurrent and makes them care." – Mystery Scene Magazine "Kling writes with crisp assurance, especially about life in South Florida." – Publishers Weekly "Seychelle Sullivan is a worthy successor to John D. Book excerpt: Colombia's Pacific coast, where everyday life entails warding off the brutal forces of nature. Damaris lives with her fisherman husband in a shack on a bluff overlooking the sea. Childless and at that age 'when women dry up,' as her uncle puts it, she is eager to adopt an orphaned puppy. But this act may bring more than just affection into her home. Beauty and dread live side by side in this poignant exploration or the many meanings of motherhood and love.

Book excerpt: Annie's inner conflict was spiraling out of control by her constant struggle with the memories of her past, her unceasing battle with her present, and ever looming dread and fear for her future. How could she find peace with all three? Each night, her dream always started out the same way. She was driving, and it was night. It was pitch black. They drove into the dark and depressing night, its blackness pressing in on them, surrounding and suffocating them until it felt as if there was no air left to breath. They were running from the piercing black that threatened to swallow them both. Then, without warning, the car in which Annie was driving was speeding up, and Annie couldn't stop it. She frantically stepped on the brake, but it only caused the car to dash faster and faster into the night. Then, she and the child and the car were falling into a black abyss, and Annie was reaching out for the small hand of the frightened child next to her. She groped around in the dark, touching the small fingers, but was never able to grasp them. And each time the dream or haunting occurred, Annie's nightmare brought with it more and more dread with an oncoming feeling of doom lurking in the shadows, until Annie found it as hard to be awake as it was to be asleep. And her terror mounted with each passing dream, until finally her past and her present collided, bringing to Annie something she never expected.

Book excerpt: The ship Perra de Mar was a Fantasma class ship that was built as a result of the United States Navy's goal to produce a low-cost, multi-role, tactical, littoral ship for themselves and their allies. The ship was to be designed to operate in the relatively shallow waters along coastal areas, while retaining the ability to defend itself from equal or even larger warships. Its four-and-a-half-meter draft would allow it to maneuver in shallow bays and estuaries where larger ships could not. The Navy awarded four-year design contracts to SeaTact and Oceanic Engineering. Each would produce a concept demonstration ship or more commonly known as, a technology demonstrator. The demonstrator ship must not only be prepared to show off its combat prowess but also its stealth capabilities. SeaTact's entry, Fantasma, was the most popular according to the crewmembers and officers that were involved in the ship's testing. SeaTact's marine engineer on the project was Hermia Contreras. She was a retired Navy Commander with years of experience at sea. Unfortunately, the Fantasma did not win the competition. As a result, it was to be stripped and then turned over to a ship-breaker for demolition. Instead of allowing the ship to be destroyed, Hermia clandestinely sailed the ship out of the harbor with a hand-picked crew. Hermia was on a mission to rescue her brother that had been captured and confined to a North Korean prison when he was caught during an attempt to rescue a news reporter. She is being helped by the CIA, because they want her to rescue the reporter. She is also a CIA agent that is still in possession of some important information concerning North Korea's nuclear weapons capability. To sweeten the deal, the CIA would see to it that the United States government would never bring charges against her or her crew for laws broken while completing their missions. The only drawback was that the CIA couldn't overtly prevent any other country from acting against her. This makes her enterprise very dangerous. Thus, begins a cruise around the world, punctuated by dangerous encounters with the Russians pirates and the Chinese Navy. When her pursuers discovered that the ship is registered under the Andorran flag, as the Buque de Investigación Perra de Mar (Research Vessel Sea Bitch). 'Sink the Sea Bitch' became the vehement declaration of her pursuers.

Book excerpt: By chance and a series of convoluted events, I was given an opportunity to steal my own ship from the Navy with all the latest armament and weapons. When the DOD published a request for a proposal from shipbreakers to deconstruct my creation, I had my shipbreaking company offer the Navy a deal they couldn't refuse. Though I was legally required to dismantle it under DOD supervision, I quickly resold it to another company I owned in Malta. That company, Malta Privateers, reflagged and renamed the vessel. The Navy warship became a research ship, 'RV Perra de Mar, ' and, in time, became more affectionately known by the English translation, Sea Bitch. After a successful rescue of my brother from inside the North Korean borders proved my ship's unique capabilities, the CIA took note of our success. Before we reached Hawaii, they asked me and my crew to continue working for them secretly. I agreed but with conditions of my own. As a benevolent privateer, I could carry out missions that allowed me to deal harshly with world-class crimes and injustices. So, I continued to command the Perra de Mar and operate it under the facade of a research ship, where new missions continued to take me on an adventurous worldwide journey punctuated by dangerous encounters and treacherous challenges.

Book excerpt: “For such a sun-stoked place, Miami sure is shady . . . this batch of dirty deep South Florida fiction might just send you packing . . . your own heat.” —SunPost Don’t let the fabulous weather, the beach bodies, and the high-end boutiques fool you. There is a darkness to Miami that can hit just as hard as a hurricane. If by day, the streets are lined with tourists, at night the gangsters, drug dealers, and desperate come out to play. It’s this Miami that has captured the imagination of some of the city’s best writers. Miami Noir includes stories by James W. Hall, Barbara Parker, John Dufresne, Paul Levine, Carolina Garcia-Aguilera, Tom Corcoran, Christine Kling, George Tucker, Kevin Allen, Anthony Dale Gagliano, David Beaty, Vicki Hendricks, John Bond, Preston Allen, Lynne Barrett, and Jeffrey Wehr. “For different reasons these stories cultivate a little something special, a radiance, a humanity, even a grace, In the midst of the noir gloom, and thereby set themselves apart. Variety, familiarity, mood and tone, and the occasional gem of a story make Miami Noir a collection to savor.” —The Miami Herald “Murder is nothing new in Miami—or any other big city, for that matter. But seldom has it been so entertaining as it is in the 16 short stories included in Miami Noir.” —Palm Beach Daily News “This well-chosen short story collection isn’t just a thoughtful compilation of work by some of South Florida’s best and upcoming writers. Each Miami Noir story also is a window on a different part of Miami-Dade and its melting pot of cultures.” —South Florida Sun-Sentinel
