Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scottish Home Rule Debate of 19th and 20th February, 1890: Analysis of the Divisions and Remarks on the Debate; Also Sir Archibald Alison's Article on the Old Scottish Parliament, &C. &C. &C The humanity of the present times has long and energetically con tended with the natural apprehensions Of the English lawyers and judges, to give the right of being defended by counsel to prisoners charged with felony. It is singular that this privilege, often Of vital importance in doubtful cases, has been established for nearly three centuries in the Scottish law; and that by Special statute, not only is the accused in all cases entitled to be heard at full length by counsel on the evidence, and to have the last word in the debate, but in the event of his being unable. Book Scottish Home Rule

Download or read book Scottish Home Rule written by Ben Thomson and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A proponent of Scottish Home Rule offers a clear and concise introduction to the merits of the policy and the history of the movement. Every debate about the Scottish constitution should include the topic of Scottish Home Rule, and if there is to be another referendum in Scotland then Home Rule should be one of the options on the ballot paper. Yet, for all its importance, Home Rule is not widely understood. The proposal is seen by many Unionists as the slippery slope to Independence. Meanwhile, Independence supporters regard it as a Unionist proposal to retain sovereignty over Scotland. It is however a strong proposal in its own right, with a separate history from Independence and a more likely steppingstone to Federalism. This book lays out the merits of Scottish Home Rule as the best solution for Scotland. It covers the history of support for the Home Rule option since 1860s, a clear outline of how it works, and a discussion about how it could both improve Scotland and act as a framework for constitutional reform across the UK.

Book Debating Scotland

Download or read book Debating Scotland written by Michael Keating and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 18 September 2014, Scotland held a referendum on the question: Should Scotland be an independent country? This is a most unusual event in modern democracies and engaged the political class, civil society, and the general public to an unprecedented degree, leading to an 85 per cent turnout in the final vote. This was an occasion to debate not just the narrow constitutional issue but the future of the nation, including the economy, social welfare, defence and security, and Scotland's place in Europe and the world. Debating Scotland comes from a team of researchers who observed the debates from close-up and engaged with both sides, with the media and with the public in analyzing the issues, while remaining neutral on the independence question. The book examines the main issues at stake, how they were presented, and how they evolved over the course of the campaign. The editors and contributing authors explore the ways both independence and union were framed, the economic issues, the currency, welfare, defence and security, the European Union, and how the example of small independent states was used. The volume concludes with an analysis of voter responses, based upon original survey research, which demonstrates how perceptions of risk and uncertainty on the main issues played a key role in the outcome.

Book The Round Table Movement and the Fall of the Second British Empire 1909 1919

Download or read book The Round Table Movement and the Fall of the Second British Empire 1909 1919 written by Andrea Bosco and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the general phobia of federalism, there is a strong federalist trend within British political culture. In three very different historical contexts, federalism inspired the action of political movements such as the Imperial Federation League, the Round Table and the Federal Union. Indeed, it was regarded as the solution to problems arising from the first signs of the possible collapse of Great Britain and its Empire. The Round Table Movement played a particularly interesting role in this regard, attempting to reverse the rapid and inexorable decline of the British Empire. It was a political organisation with roots in all the major peripheries of the Empire and almost unlimited financial resources. This volume discusses the strategies and means employed by the group in order to maintain the British Empire’s global prominence. The book’s main argument is that we did not have a “British century” – the nineteenth – and an “American century” – the twentieth – but, rather, four centuries of Anglo–Saxon supremacy, which witnessed the affirmation of the national principle – expression of the Continental political tradition – and its overcoming through its opposite, the federal principle, the expression of the insular political tradition.
