Henry Jones Ford (1851-1925) was a political scientist, journalist, university professor, and government official.Ford worked as a managing editor and editorial writer from 1872 to 1905, at six different newspapers in three cities (Baltimore, New York and Pittsburgh). Later returning to Baltimore (his hometown), Ford taught at Johns Hopkins University, and afterwards taught at the University of Pennsylvania. He later took a job as professor of politics at Princeton University, at the request of the university's then-president, Woodrow Wilson. Ford's association with Wilson would take him also into politics. When Wilson became governor of New Jersey, he appointed Ford Commissioner of Banking and Insurance; after Wilson became president, Ford was sent to the Philippines on a special mission, reporting directly to the president, and toward the end of Wilson's presidency Ford was named to a position on the Interstate Commerce Commission. Their association would also result in Ford's book Woodrow Wilson, the Man and His Work, which was an account of Wilson's experience on the presidential campaign trail. Ford served as president of the American Political Science Association from 1918 to 1919.

These five essays were delivered as lectures at a conference on the Scotch-Irish held in Belfast in 1965. This edition contains an introduction by Steve Ickringill re-viewing recent research. The first essay is an examination of President Woodrow Wilson's Scots and Scotch-Irish inheritance of family and religious traditions. He is shown as typifying almost all aspects of the remarkable Scots and Scotch-Irish legacy to American society, culture and politics. The next paper considers the educational contribution of the Scotch-Irish to colonial America, beginning with elementary church schools and academies for preparing young men for the ministry, and proceeding to the most important institution, Princeton, decisively Presbyterian and Scots in character. A neglected period in the study of Irish emigration is covered in an essay on Ulster Emigration to America, 1783-1815; this shows that emigration continued on a large scale after 1783 in spite of British Government restrictions, and that these emigrants like their predecessors, immediately assumed loyalty to their adopted country, notably in the war of 1812. The fourth paper argues that perhaps the most important aspect of the influence of the Scotch-Irish in the making of the United States was not so much their contribution to leadership in politics and education as in their shaping of the patterns of settlement and land-use. The final essay, on Ulster's emigrant's letters, points to the value of these documents as sources of information on the emigrant experience, both social and economic.

Indeed, the transformation of the Irish image is a fascinating blend of political, cultural, racial, commercial, and social influences. The Green Space examines the variety of factors that contributed to remaking the Irish image from downtrodden and despised to universally acclaimed. To understand the forces that molded how people understand “Irish” is to see the matrix—the green space—that facilitated their interaction between the 1890s and 1960s. Marion R. Casey argues that, as “Irish” evolved between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, a visual and rhetorical expanse for representing ethnicity was opened up in the process. The evolution was also transnational; both Ireland and the United States were inextricably linked to how various iterations of “Irish” were deployed over time—whether as a straightforward noun about a specific people with a national identity or a loose, endlessly malleable adjective only tangentially connected to actual ethnic identity. Featuring a rich assortment of sources and images, The Green Space takes the history of the Irish image in America as a prime example of the ways in which culture and identity can be manufactured, repackaged, and ultimately revolutionized. Rankin Sherling imaginatively uses the various bits of available data to sketch the first outline of the shape of Irish Presbyterian migration to America in the nineteenth century. Using the migration of Irish Presbyterian ministers as "tracers" of a larger migration, Sherling demonstrates that eighteenth-century migration of Protestants reveals much about the completely unknown nineteenth-century migration. An original and creative blueprint of Irish Presbyterian migration in the nineteenth century, The Invisible Irish calls into question many of the assumptions that the history of Irish migration to America is built upon.
