Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scientific Results of the Exhibition It would have been a congenial task to me to describe here some of the rare specimens of great interest to the zoologist, which have been sent by foreign countries to this exhibition, such specimens as Nordenskjold's Phytina and the magnificent skeletons of Ziphioid Whales shown in the Swedish court are of surpassing interest and importance from the zoological point of view. At the same time it must be admitted that they do not have any special importance in relation to Fisheries, and accordingly I must leave unnoticed such rarities and delights of the zoologist, in order to address myself more especially to the question of the relationship of the science of zoology to the fish industry. The value of zoological science in relation to fisheries is not, I think, so fully appreciated in this country as is desirable in. the interests of the public, and of those who make profit by enterprise in fisheries. There is a very general tendency among men whose occupations are of a commercial character to undervalue the work of scientific inquiry, not only in regard to such matters as fisheries and fish-culture, but also in relation to manufacturing industries, agriculture, mining, and even in relation to medicine. To a large extent this arises from a misconception as to the real nature and character of what is called "science." Book Evaluation Techniques for Interpretation

Download or read book Evaluation Techniques for Interpretation written by J. Alan Wagar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-25 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evaluation Techniques for Interpretation: Study Results From an Exhibition on Energy The theme for the 1973 summer special was Energy and Its Relation to Man and the Environment. This Energy Special was set up in the Center's Allen Building with the floor space of approximately 80 by 104 feet (24 by 31 meters) divided into five parts. Four parts were used for the presentations listed in table 1. The fifth was used as a reading area. Evaluation began only after the Energy Special was complete enough to open-a month and a half after con struction began. The first evaluation data were collected from an invited audience on June 28, 3 days ahead of the public opening. Evaluation data were collected until the exhibition closed on September 1, 1973. In all, nine analyses were made. Six were evaluations: evaluation by a panel of outsiders, volunteered comments, observed audience attention, time-lapse photography, visitor voting at individual presentations, and following sample visitors. The other three examined hours of attendance, visitor characteristics, and interest in possible themes for future summer specials. During the summer, six outsiders were invited to visit the Energy Special and then to be interviewed concerning what they observed. None of the six was a specialist in interpretation, and none was associated with the Pacific Science Center. However, all were professional people with some experience or personal interest in interpreting scientific topics to the public. Book New Directions in Print Culture Studies

Download or read book New Directions in Print Culture Studies written by Jesse W. Schwartz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-06-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Directions in Print Culture Studies features new methods and approaches to cultural and literary history that draw on periodicals, print culture, and material culture, thus revising and rewriting what we think we know about the aesthetic, cultural, and social history of transnational America. The unifying questions posed and answered in this book are methodological: How can we make material, archival objects meaningful? How can we engage and contest dominant conceptions of aesthetic, historical, and literary periods? How can we present archival material in ways that make it accessible to other scholars and students? What theoretical commitments does a focus on material objects entail? New Directions in Print Culture Studies brings together leading scholars to address the methodological, historical, and theoretical commitments that emerge from studying how periodicals, books, images, and ideas circulated from the 19th century to the present. Reaching beyond national boundaries, the essays in this book focus on the different materials and archives we can use to rewrite literary history in ways that highlight not a canon of “major” literary works, but instead the networks, dialogues, and tensions that define print cultures in various moments and movements.

Book Exhibition of a Selection from the Work of Charles M ryon Classic Reprint

Download or read book Exhibition of a Selection from the Work of Charles M ryon Classic Reprint written by Burlington Fine Arts Club and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exhibition of a Selection From the Work of Charles Méryon Charles Méryon was born in Paris in 1821, the natural son of an English father and French mother. From his father he inherited that strong tenacity of purpose and English determination, of which more than one instance is recorded; from his mother, his genius and powers of imagination, with a highly sensitive mind, and a tendency to be ever in excess, as well as the germs of that malady, which was in the end to carry him off, as it had his mother before him. The care of the father for the son seems to have been limited to the supply of sufficient sums of money; and the education of the child and boy thus devolved upon the mother, who was, in many respects, but ill fitted ifor such a charge. His studies, however, were not neglected; and in 1837 Méryon entered the Naval School at Brest, which he left, two years later, to make his first voyage in the Mediterranean. During this voyage we find him already busy with his pencil, and sketching, while off the Piraeus, the choragic monu ment of Lysicrates; of which sketch he was afterwards to make such good use in his charming plate of The entrance to the French Capucin Convent at Athens, impressions of which are exhibited.
