Book The Structure of Scientific Examination Questions

Download or read book The Structure of Scientific Examination Questions written by Adrian Day and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how Systemic Functional Linguistics may be used to explore and explain the grammar of scientific examination questions. The author outlines the key elements of this theory and identifies problematical structures that affect the linguistic validity of such education assessment questions. This book also shows how examination questions may provide insight into the relationship between teaching and language in science. Do candidates give an incorrect answer because they do not understand the topic or because they do not understand the language by which the question is framed? This book shows how the analysis of scientific examination questions can answer this question. These chapters show how contemporary linguistics can inform the assessment of science and address topics including: the role of images, lexicography, the morphology of sentences, semantic discontinuity and the active reader. An example question is used throughout the text to illustrate the theories and each chapter has its own useful summary, making it a very readable work.

Book Advanced Biomedical Image Analysis

Download or read book Advanced Biomedical Image Analysis written by Mark Haidekker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive reference of cutting-edge advanced techniques for quantitative image processing and analysis Medical diagnostics and intervention, and biomedical research rely progressively on imaging techniques, namely, the ability to capture, store, analyze, and display images at the organ, tissue, cellular, and molecular level. These tasks are supported by increasingly powerful computer methods to process and analyze images. This text serves as an authoritative resource and self-study guide explaining sophisticated techniques of quantitative image analysis, with a focus on biomedical applications. It offers both theory and practical examples for immediate application of the topics as well as for in-depth study. Advanced Biomedical Image Analysis presents methods in the four major areas of image processing: image enhancement and restoration, image segmentation, image quantification and classification, and image visualization. In each instance, the theory, mathematical foundation, and basic description of an image processing operator is provided, as well as a discussion of performance features, advantages, and limitations. Key algorithms are provided in pseudo-code to help with implementation, and biomedical examples are included in each chapter. Image registration, storage, transport, and compression are also covered, and there is a review of image analysis and visualization software. Members of the academic community involved in image-related research as well as members of the professional R&D sector will rely on this volume. It is also well suited as a textbook for graduate-level image processing classes in the computer science and engineering fields.

Book The Kuhnian Image of Science

Download or read book The Kuhnian Image of Science written by Moti Mizrahi and published by Collective Studies in Knowledg. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 50 years after the publication of Thomas Kuhn's seminal book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, this volume assesses the adequacy of the Kuhnian model in explaining certain aspects of science, particularly the social and epistemic aspects of science. One argument put forward is that there are no good reasons to accept Kuhn's incommensurability thesis, according to which scientific revolutions involve the replacement of theories with conceptually incompatible ones. Perhaps, therefore, it is time for another "decisive transformation in the image of science by which we are now possessed." Only this time, the image of science that needs to be transformed is the Kuhnian one. Does the Kuhnian image of science provide an adequate model of scientific practice? If we abandon the Kuhnian picture of revolutionary change and incommensurability, what consequences would follow from that vis--vis our understanding of scientific knowledge as a social endeavour? The essays in this collection continue this debate, offering a critical examination of the arguments for and against the Kuhnian image of science as well as their implications for our understanding of science as a social and epistemic enterprise.
