Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scientific Bases of Faith The present work was promised in the preface of my work on "Habit and Intelligence," which was published in the summer of 1869. When that preface was written, I hoped to publish the present work at the end of 1870: but it has been delayed by my feeling it a duty to take an active part in the re-organization of the Church of Ireland after its disestablishment: and I have not the power which I admire in some men of getting rapidly through a great quantity of work. The only words of explanation or defence which I design to prefix to this book concern the way in which I have treated the authority of the Holy Scriptures: for it is possible that some whom I may hope to influence might otherwise be repelled by what they may think inconsistent if not insincere language on that subject. As this work is not a treatise on the historical authorities of revelation, the preface is the best place to meet such objections. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Faith Brevity is always at the risk of clearness. The need, however, is for a concise discussion. There fore it is necessary to ask the reader to consider care fully each step in the argument, before coming to a conclusion. It is hoped the marginal notes suggest ing the line of thought in each paragraph, will prove an assistance. The reader is requested to read these notes over again at the close of each chapter, should there be a desire to recall clearly the fulness of the argument. This book is sent forth with the prayerful hope that it will prove helpful to many in confirming and establishing the reasonableness and the reality of the Christian faith. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith Works of Christian Science It is plain, therefore, that we have, in Science ana' Health, a sure guide to the doctrines of Christian Science; so far as any guide can be sure, which, claiming final inspiration, is yet under frequent revision, expurgation, and wholesale correction. The passages which I have put together are mostly from a 1903 edition. Christian Science is some times called Divine Science, or, simply, Science. That there may be no confusion, I have avoided the ordinary use of the word Science. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Bible Science and Faith Classic Reprint

Download or read book Bible Science and Faith Classic Reprint written by J. A. Zahm and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible, Science, and Faith Those who still view the Bible as a divinely inspired book, despite the repeated attacks made on its authenticity and inspiration, as well as those who yet hold to the teachings of their faith, notwithstanding the theories of a certain school of scientists, who relegate religion and belief in a personal God to the limbo of idle fancies, are frequently accused of forswearing their liberty of thought, and of voluntarily placing themselves in a condition of intellectual thraldom which incapacitates them from appreciating the true significance of the most important inductions and generalizations of modern science. Groundless as this charge is, there are not a few, even among intelligent people, who believe it to be substantially true. And yet nothing could be more false or absurd. As well say that the mariner forfeits his freedom of action because, forsooth, he gives heed to the buoys and lighthouses which are stationed along his course, and which signalize reefs and shoals and indicate places where the safety of his vessel would be imperilled or where navigation is impossible. What buoys and lighthouses are to the seafaring man, that expressions of revealed truth and principles of Christian philosophy are to the man of science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Credentials of Science: The Warrant of Faith At the invitation of the union theological seminary of new york city, and delivered in the Adams Chapel of the Seminary during the early spring of 1887, the course of eight lectures closing on Easter Eve. The material was subsequently con siderably amplified, and delivered as a course of twelve lectures before the Lowell Institute of Bos ton, closing on Christmas Eve of the same year. The lectures have been printed as thus extended, although in some cases the limitations of a lecture hour compelled a division of subjects, which are here united under the same heading, thus reducing the number of chapters in the book to ten. The mo tive of the work is sufficiently indicated by its title, and requires no further introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Science and Faith Classic Reprint

Download or read book Science and Faith Classic Reprint written by Francis Aveling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science and Faith This lecture upon Science and Faith, in which an attempt is made to deal upon general lines with difficulties arising out of the very general misconception as to the true nature and func tion of exact science, forms the first of the second series of Westminster Lectures delivered in the Cathedral Hall at Westminster in 1906. In dealing with such a misconception as is involved in the supposition that there are contradictions between the exact results Of Science and the dogma Of Revelation, a critical and an argumentative treatment is to a certain extent unavoidable. In accordance, however, with the plan of exposition adopted in these lectures, this treatment is emphasised as little as the nature of the subject will permit; and the positive and constructive element, at which the Westminster Lectures aim, is adopted in SO far as it is possible. Download or read book The Biblical Basis for Modern Science written by Henry Morris and published by New Leaf Publishing Group. This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, Henry Morris has been known as a defender of the Christian faith. It's an auspicious title for such a humble man, yet no one can deny that the grasp Morris has on science and faith issues is staggering. In this updated classic, Morris walks the reader through history "real history" by showing the absurdity of evolution. From a wide variety of sciences, including astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, and geology, Morris presents clear evidence that the Bible gives us an astonishingly accurate record of the past, present, and future.

Book Science a Stronghold of Belief Classic Reprint

Download or read book Science a Stronghold of Belief Classic Reprint written by Richard Budd Painter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science a Stronghold of Belief The general plan Of the volume is to present a plain sketch Of the nature Of matter, force, and spirit, as far as science and common sense can decipher them; and to Show that they could not have come of themselves by haphazard and could not work solely by their own self-created powers but must have arisen, and must work, according to the design and purpose Of a Supernatural power. It will also be endeavoured to be proved, that the vital principle, or life force, is a distinct force, and a specially created thing; and, above all, that the intel lectual mind, or spirit Of man, is a quality not only superior to, but essentially different from, the mind Of animals. The author is an Old and devoted student in science, and it will be seen that his constant Object throughout is to endea vour, in a strictly scientific spirit - as distinguished from a mere blind and dogmatic faith - to reconcile modern scientific discoveries, and theories, and philosophic modes Of thought, with the Old belief in God and the Bible, such as was, and is held by so many of the wisest and best men Of the past, and Of the present. Book Lectures on the Bases of Religious Belief

Download or read book Lectures on the Bases of Religious Belief written by Charles B. Upton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Bases of Religious Belief: Delivered in Oxford and London in April and May, 1893 These elementary Lectures on the Philosophy of Reli gion have been delivered and published mainly in the hope that they may prove in some measure helpful to those persons who have ceased to see in an external, miraculously-attested Revelation a satisfactory founds tion for Religious Belief, and are seeking a rational basis for faith which shall be in harmony with that general theory of the cosmos to which the soundest science and philosophy of our time appear to lend the strongest support. In this respect, accordingly, the pre sent volume may, perhaps, be found of some service as an introduction to far more elaborate and important works, such as are Dr. Martineau's two treatises, A Study of Religion, and The Seat of Authority in Religion.
