Book The Science of Wealth

Download or read book The Science of Wealth written by Tony Aspromourgos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-09-18 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study clarifies the character of 'political economy' as a distinct and separable intellectual discipline in the generic sense, in the texts of Adam Smith. It focuses upon the scope and fundamental conceptualizations of the new science. Smith's conceptualization of economic analysis is shown to constitute a unified intellectual piece for understanding economic society and its dynamics. Smith's fundamental economic language is exhaustively examined, in all his texts, with a view to clarifying the meaning of the basic concepts of his system. As well, the 'prehistories' of those concepts, in literature prior to Smith, back to the earliest times, are quite comprehensively treated, thereby placing his political economy in its larger historical context and conveying a rich sense of the history of these ideas over the whole course of our civilization. A quite complete account of Smith's economics as a whole is also entailed by this undertaking: his key substantive economic doctrines are thoroughly considered as well, and all the elements of his economic theory receive attention. To that extent, notwithstanding the focus on concepts, an interpretation of the substance of Smith's political economy is also provided. This focus is partly motivated by the view that Smith's intellectual triumph in the history of social science is not so much about the success of specific doctrines. His more considerable theoretical success is at a deeper level: gaining a wide and long-lasting acquiescence in the conceptual universe framed by the fundamental structures of his system, for a newly emerging discipline. Those who subsequently contested Smithian doctrine did so within Smith's framework; they did so 'on his terms'. While the book's primary purpose is to reconstruct the character of Smith's political economy as a distinct intellectual enterprise, it also addresses its relevance to modern economics, and to policy and practice in contemporary liberal society.

It presents seemingly unmanageable concepts in easy, bite-size pieces to make complex concepts easy to understand. The economic theories that have shaped nations for centuries and influence the way we live now become clear. History would tell us that economics has always been relevant. However, as America and the world enter a time of great political and financial unrest, it is critical that we understand how the forces driving the world economy work -- and how the political decisions that were made affect it. From Keynesian models developed during the Depression to how inflation occurs and its effect on interest rates, The Economics Bible makes global finance more easily understood. The subjects include: Macro-(market-driven) and micro-(citizen-driven) economics Inflation (rising prices, wages, hyper-inflation) Recession (slow or negative economic growth) Economic forecasting (pundits' predictions, often wrong) How stock markets work (buying and selling, what is the index) The Chicago School (free-market economic philosophy) Globalization (the growth of multinational corporations) Labor markets (wages, supply and demand) Adam Smith (the founder of economics) Sub-prime collapse (risky mortgages and sinking real estate values) Free trade (barrier-free intercountry transactions without barrier) The Euro (monetary unit of the European Union). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a serious effort to divine the secret of the West's success in achieving wealth and power, Yen Fu, a Chinese thinker, undertook, at the turn of the century, years of laborious translation and commentary on the work of such thinkers as Spencer, Huxley, Adam Smith, Mill, and Montesquieu. In addition to the inevitable difficulties involved in translating modern English into classical Chinese, Yen Fu was faced with the formidable problem of interpreting and making palatable many Western ideas which were to a large extent antithetical to traditional Chinese thought. In an absorbing study of Yen Fu's translations, essays, and commentaries, Benjamin Schwartz examines the modifications and consequent revaluation of these familiar works as they were presented to their new audience, and analyzes the impact of this Western thought on the Chinese culture of the time. Drawing on a unique knowledge of both intellectual traditions, Schwartz describes the diverse and complex effects of this confrontation of Eastern and Western philosophies and provides a new vantage point to assess and appreciate these two disparate worlds.

Book The Origin of Wealth

Download or read book The Origin of Wealth written by Eric D. Beinhocker and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2007-09-14 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 6.4 billion people participate in a $36.5 trillion global economy, designed and overseen by no one. How did this marvel of self-organized complexity evolve? How is wealth created within this system? And how can wealth be increased for the benefit of individuals, businesses, and society? In The Origin of Wealth, Eric D. Beinhocker argues that modern science provides a radical perspective on these age-old questions, with far-reaching implications. According to Beinhocker, wealth creation is the product of a simple but profoundly powerful evolutionary formula: differentiate, select, and amplify. In this view, the economy is a "complex adaptive system" in which physical technologies, social technologies, and business designs continuously interact to create novel products, new ideas, and increasing wealth. Taking readers on an entertaining journey through economic history, from the Stone Age to modern economy, Beinhocker explores how "complexity economics" provides provocative insights on issues ranging from creating adaptive organizations to the evolutionary workings of stock markets to new perspectives on government policies. A landmark book that shatters conventional economic theory, The Origin of Wealth will rewire our thinking about how we came to be here--and where we are going.
