Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Poetry and the Philosophy of LanguageTo many persons it will appear an audacity to cross question the Muses, a sacrilege to enter the temple of their worship with the lamp of science. Galileo startled the orthodoxy of his age, religious and scientific alike, by his declaration that the earth revolves around the sun. Darwin Shocked the world with his announcement that man and monkey are descendants of a common ancestor nu arboreal creature with tail and pointed ears. The thought of such lowly origin was most repugnant to many, who had been taught to believe in man's divine origin; but Darwin's evidence staggered the world, made it pause and investigate. Investigation was followed by conviction.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Crude materialism, reduction of mind to body, extreme individualism. All products of a 17th century scientific inheritance which looks at the parts of our existence at the expense of the whole. Cutting through myths of scientific omnipotence, Mary Midgley explores how this inheritance has so powerfully shaped the way we are, and the problems it has brought with it. She argues that poetry and the arts can help reconcile these problems, and counteract generations of 'one-eyed specialists', unable and unwilling to look beyond their own scientific or literary sphere. Dawkins, Atkins, Bacon and Descartes all come under fire as Midgely sears through contemporary debate, from Gaia to memes, and organic food to greenhouse gases. After years of unquestioned imperialism, science is finally forced to take a step back and acknowledge the arts.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Words: A Popular Introduction to the Science of Language Indeed, even the roughest shepherd who looks at the dawn brightening in the east, or at evening, while driving his flock home, stops to contemplate the sky ablaze with the glow of the setting sun, and the sailor who watches from the deck the great vault of heaven and its countless stars mirrored in the water around him, can not but be moved by the great ness of such scenes. Yet their admiration, great as it is, can not even be compared with that of the student of astronomy, who knows what those stars are, and how many thousands of millions Of miles theirlight has traveled to reach us; who knows that nearly every one of those countless sparkling points is the centre of. A separate solar system, each system as great and wonderful as that in which we live. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book On Poetry and Philosophy

Download or read book On Poetry and Philosophy written by Brayton Polka and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-04 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brayton Polka’s book, On Poetry and Philosophy: Thinking Metaphorically with Wordsworth and Kant, is unique in bringing poetry and philosophy together in a single study. The poet and the philosopher whom he makes central to his project are both revolutionary founders of modernity, Wordsworth of romantic poetry and Kant of critical philosophy. Both the poet and the philosopher, as the author makes clear in his study, found their principles, at once poetically metaphorical and philosophically critical, on the religious values that are central to the Bible—that all human beings are equal before God.

Book Essays on the Study and Use of Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays on the Study and Use of Poetry Classic Reprint written by Plutarch and Basil the Great and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Study and Use of Poetry The recent very general interest in poetics has led me to prepare these translations of the essays on poetry by Plutarch and Basil the Great, in the hope that they may prove useful to students of literature. Although they were not epoch-making, these essays are worthy of consideration, for, besides their intrinsic value, they mark interesting stages in the history of poetic criticism. The essay on How a Young Man Ought to Study Poetry was first rendered into English by Philemon Holland, who made a complete translation of the Morals, which was issued in octavo from the press of Arnold Hatfield, a London printer, in 1603. Its title reads as follows: The Philosophic, commonlie called The Morals, written by the learned Philosopher Plutarch of Chaeronea. Translated out of Greek into English, and conferred with the Latin translations and the French, by Philemon Holland of Coventrie, Doctor in Physicke. Whereunto are annexed the Summaries necessary to be read before every Treatise. This version, though its archaism possesses an undeniable charm, is not altogether adapted to modern requirements. A second edition, newly revised and corrected, appeared in 1657, and this was followed not many years later by the translation of the Morals by Several Hands, published in London in 1684- 1694.To this work Simon Ford contributed the version of the essay on How a Young Man Ought to Study Poetry. Fords translation is clumsy, frequently obscure, and often wide of the Greek. In 1870 Professor Goodwin offered a corrected and revised text of this rendering of the Morals, and the fact that the sixth edition appeared in 1898 attests the usefulness of this revised version. Book A Poetic Philosophy of Language

Download or read book A Poetic Philosophy of Language written by Philip Mills and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connecting poetry and philosophy of language, Philip Mills bridges the continental and analytical divide by bringing together the writings of Nietzsche and Wittgenstein. Through an expressivist philosophy of poetry, he argues that we can understand some of the core questions in the philosophy of language. Mills highlights the continuity of poetic language with ordinary language, and positions Nietzsche and Wittgenstein's thinking as the clearest way to expand the philosophy of poetry. By tracing the expressivist tradition of philosophy of language, this study locates its roots in German Romanticism right through to the work of contemporary expressivists such as Huw Price and Robert Brandom. Where poetry has been difficult to grasp with the traditional philosophical tools used by aestheticians, A Poetic Philosophy of Language operates at the crossroads between philosophy of art and language, proposing a new philosophy of poetry with wide-ranging potentialities.
