Book The Monstrous Feminine in Contemporary Japanese Popular Culture

Download or read book The Monstrous Feminine in Contemporary Japanese Popular Culture written by Raechel Dumas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the monstrous-feminine in Japanese popular culture, produced from the late years of the 1980s through to the new millennium. Raechel Dumas examines the role of female monsters in selected works of fiction, manga, film, and video games, offering a trans-genre, trans-media analysis of this enduring trope. The book focuses on several iterations of the monstrous-feminine in contemporary Japan: the self-replicating shōjo in horror, monstrous mothers in science fiction, female ghosts and suburban hauntings in cinema, female monsters and public violence in survival horror games, and the rebellious female body in mytho-fiction. Situating the titles examined here amid discourses of crisis that have materialized in contemporary Japan, Dumas illuminates the ambivalent pleasure of the monstrous-feminine as a trope that both articulates anxieties centered on shifting configurations of subjectivity and nationhood, and elaborates novel possibilities for identity negotiation and social formation in a period marked by dramatic change.

From novels to music videos, photography to video games, the evil child haunts a range of texts and comes in a variety of forms, including changelings, ferals, and monstrous newborns. In this book, Renner illustrates how each subtype offers a different explanation for the problem of the “evil” child and adapts to changing historical circumstances and ideologies.

For Jess Morgan, who is growing tired of living her life to please everyone else, discovering her late aunt’s diaries shows her she’s not the only one struggling to hide who she really is. But was her aunt truly a Romanov princess? Or is this some elaborate hoax? With the help of a supremely dorky but undeniably cute local college student named Evan, Jess digs into the century-old mystery. But soon Jess realizes there’s another, bigger truth waiting to be revealed: Jess Morgan. Because if she’s learned anything from Aunt Anna, it’s that only you can write your own story.

Book The Final Day at Westfield Arcade

Download or read book The Final Day at Westfield Arcade written by Andy Hunt and published by Infinity Books. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1982, there were 13,000 video game arcades in North America that generated over $8 billion in quarters, a figure higher than the combined revenue of the music ($4 billion) and film ($3 billion) industries that year. By 2002, fewer than 500 arcades remained, and total revenue had dropped to less than $100 million. THE FINAL DAY AT WESTFIELD ARCADE is a coming-of-age novel set against the backdrop of the astronomic rise and fall of the video game arcade industry. It's the final day of business at Westfield Arcade, the video game arcade where middle-aged Mike Mayberry has worked since he was a teenager. Mike spends his final day at Westfield Arcade taking a nostalgia-fueled journey back through the arcade's glory years of the 1980s, the era when Pac Man ruled the world and every night at the arcade was an adventure. He reflects on the endless memories he's made and chronicles the ups and downs in his relationship with an unforgettable girl over those years. As the final day of business at his beloved video game arcade comes to an emotional end, Mike contemplates a major decision for his post-arcade life, a decision that he hopes will once and for all answer the question of whether the girl who got away so many years ago truly did get away for good.
