A complete table of all unquestioned cases is appended, to enable the Fellows to review my conclusions if they so desire, and I must beg that they will judge Of their correctness by glancing at the Tables (pages 8 to I 7) as I read, these really constituting the body of my address. I do not deny the possibility - indeed, the probability - that I have not secured reports of all total excisions of'the scapula for malignant disease, and possibly more favorable results might thus be revealed if additional cases were unearthed, but after the exhaustive efforts I have made, I am convinced that no material change would be made in my conclusions. A few words are requisite to explain the methods em ployed in the compilation of these tables, which differ widely from all their predecessors. Nothing so strongly impresses the conscientious student as the extraordinary inaccuracy of the tables purporting to be those of complete extirpations of the scapula. I have thought it necessary, moreover, to alter the arrangement of the work by transposing parts of the second volume to the first, and by changing, entirely, the order of subjects in the second volume. This has been done for the purpose of making the surgical course in the University, correspond with the anatomical lectures, so that the account of surgical diseases may follow, immediately, the anatomy of the parts. Upon the whole, I am persuaded - that the work, deficient, as it still may be, in some respects, will be found enhanced in value, and that the present edition - the seventh - cannot fail to prove acceptable to the student, espe cially as valuable new matter has been added, and new plates introduced - inde pendently of the work having been gotten up by the new publishers, Messrs. Let not the young surgeon be led to amputate the jaw for a disorder with which it is often at tacked, and which is well known by the name of necrosis. I believe, that no simple necrosis of it, unattended with a fungous or medullary tumor originating within the bone it self, can ever be an instance in which amputation of the lower jaw is justifiable. Very large exfoliations take place of themselves; new bone is produced, as a substitute for what is lost; the swelling, thickening, and ulcerated state of the soft parts, all disappear; and, in the end, the patient recovers without deformity, and without the agony and dan ger of an Operation, frequently long and severe, and always more or less mutilating. These observations seemed to me proper, as a caution that might usefully accompany this edi tion, in which a newish Operation, attended with all its usual attractions, good and bad, is submitted to the notice of the profession. At the same time, I particularly request the reader to observe, that, in the chapter on this subject, the kinds of disease, for which the Operation was deemed indis pensably necessary, by surgeons of great eminence and judgment, are faithfully described.
